View Full Version : World's most typo-riddled game ad

I saw the thread about intentional misspelling, and thought of an old favorite (from a 1993 EGM) that I scanned many years ago. These are unintentional misspellings of game titles....LOTS of them!
I had marked some of my favorite typos with green dots (although I think it's more fun to find them on your own). There are others not marked. Note the disclaimer at the bottom of the ad.
Enjoy!

you have
DEADLY MORES

Also among the unmarked are things such as randomly occurring manufacturer names immediately following the game title. "BATMAN RETURN OF THE JOKER SUNSOFT" isn't particularly amusing, but "VIKING INTERPLAY" sounds foul.
My personal favorites (which are, of course, among the marked ones):
Bolphin (it's fun to say, especially if you REALLY emphasize the "B")
Sonic the Hedgehoc
Deadly Mores ("No public displays of affection, by order of martial law.")
Chester Cheetall
Also, there is the "apocalypse group"--characters that have suddenly had their companions evaporate into nothingness, leaving us with:
THE SIMPSON (who is undoubtedly playing Monoplay)
SPIDERMAN WITH X-MAN
KINGS OF THE MONSTER
Crush Crawfish

It's not their fault. At the bottom is a disclaimer that says they're not responsible for typos.
I also like where they spelled the word "carry" wrong ("cary").

Yeah, Wavel doesn't have "Untitled" flagged but Download 2 is a real game:

Love how three items can be "a trademark" of Nintendo.
Hey you, you, and you; you are all a poster of Digital Press, Congraturations!!!

Heh, I wonder where all those typos came from? They probably used one of those old handscanners with very early text recognition software and just pasted it in there without looking at it again ^^

Eh, I kind of doubt it. This was from the back of an EGM from either 92 or 93, and OCR would have been in it's infancy then (if at all).
I'm guessing that it's a combination of three things:
1. Semi literate typist/ copy guy. (this explains things such as "carry" being misspelled twice, as well as "technalagy")...
2. ..who isn't familiar with videogames whatsoever (Sonic the Hedgehoc? Missile Commando?!)...
3. ...and has a fetish for the letter "O" ("Bead Mooon", "Oloom", "Otravel", "OBart's Nightmare", as well as the aforementioned "Missile Commando")
It's not the usual transposition of letters ("teh", "Staurn", etc.) you find from rapid, unsynchronized typing, nor is it "neighbor" typos (where a letter from a neighboring key is mistakenly entered..which is more typical in people who look at their fingers rather than their screen when typing.)
The Zanac instruction manual is another gem of typographical errors. If you get a kick out of proofreading things, look into it. Maybe I'll scan it and put it up later.

seems more like when a nonenglish speaking asian tries to copy from a list of english words using an english letter keyboard. i have pirate carts that have similar-like misspellings on the labels.

It isn't a typo but its kind of funny the first time one reads it:
Customize your car. Build your crew. Race online for pinks!

Man, that poster is great. Speaking of the Zanac manual, many early NES manuals are like that. Early Hudson Soft ones are particularly bad. But my favourite is the Official Nintendo Player's Guide. It's riddled with Engrish and typos. On the first page it says "because with Nitendo (sic), you're playing with power!" And the explanation of the brain buster move in the Pro Wrestling section is hilarious.
