Why do they make collections such as "Grand Theft Auto - Collector's Edition" and "Doom - Collector's Edition"?

They have nothing to do with collector's, and possibly the only people who won't buy them ARE collector's...

They bundle a heap of games together and label them "Collector's Edition"... Why? Why do they call it a collector's edition? What kind of collector's are going to buy it? Apart from the collector's who actually do own all the games in question and are forced to buy it as part of their collection...

Meh, I don't get why publishers do this to some games...

Honestly though - Doom Collector's Edition... They bundle Doom I, II, and Final Doom together with a Doom III preview and think it's fine to call it a collector's edition...

I thought the madden collectors edition was kinda cool this year with the old madden games on it. If i was going to buy the game anyway for $49.99 whats 10 more bucks to get the extra games.

No I understand what he is saying. It is a misnomer to call it a "collectors edition." They should just call it "special edition". But they do that with all kinds of stuff. Anytime something differs from the normal product line, it is a "Collectors Edition." The question is, will this stuff be worth more 10-15 years from now?

I always assumed its a "Collectors Edition" because the only people who would buy it are die hard fans or collectors (for their respective collections). The average gamer is going to pick up the cheaper normal game most times than not. I don't think theres a problem with the name.

Because the title is a misnomer when you're a collector.

What they really mean is collected edition. Basically, unless it's a limited edition type thing, they're saying that look, here are all the games in the series in one single collection. Hence it's a "collector's edition" because it contains multiple games in the collection of that series all in one package. Make more sense?

Some other games use the exact same title for a special version with added stuff. Rarely do you see real collector's versions called the "collector's edition". Usually you'll see something like:

Growlancer Generations Deluxe Pack
Phantom Brave Special Edition
Lunar Silver Star Story Complete
Border Down Limited Edition

I can't think of any TRULY collectible games called "Collector's Edition" at all, nor of any that are intented to be collector's items, which is why I stand by the above statement of the term having a different intent than you're seeing.

Yep, you got it right. I think I explained it a little wrongly. I was trying to state that they shouldn't mislead us by calling it a collector's edition - Ie, they also do this to many Dvd's for no reason (A la Mean Girls)

The Doom Collector's Edition I was referring to is the one on PC.

Perhaps if they actually called it "Grand Theft Auto Collection" instead, it would be more accurate...

The Collector's Edition of Disciples II for PC included the Disciples II collectible card game, that was pretty cool, and certainly worth getting the Collector's Edition for. But that was one of the extremely rare exceptions. I know what you mean. Yeah, like I'm gonna buy the Collector's Edition of a series, which is really nothing but a COMPILATION of all the games in a series, and believe that somehow, it's actually gonna end up being worth MORE than owning all the ORIGINAL releases in the series would be worth to another collector! I think they should be forced to call them what they really are! CASH COWS! Just call it the Cash Cow Edition, or the Milk It For All It's Worth Edition, and stop trying to act like it's anything else but the last gasp of a dying franchise!

I'd rather spend those 10 more on the old games themselves, sealed, and in their own case with it's own manual and stuff.

If you search for old sports game, they are from .99 to 5.99

A real collector edition is like robotech battlecry on xbox

You got dogtags , a shirt, magic motion card, art cards and the soundtrack.

Id like to see other games like this .

i know this, what i ment was for the non-collector of classic stuff it would be cool to have. Most people don't have the older games around anymore.

Collector's edition as long lost its meaning.

Most games and DVDs labeled as "collector's edition" do not deserve it anymore.

The last real "collector's" I bought where Laserdiscs edition of some films which came with a signed Cell or book and were available in less than 1000. + what makes a collector's is not necessarilly the fact that it says so on the cover but more the value the market is giving an item.

Halo 2 "collector" is NEVER going to become a collector, neither will most of the so called "collector's" edition of DVDs (Which should really be called Special Edition)
