I have a question about the old poster for the original NES Castlevania that Konami gave out back in the late 80's, and I figured this forum would be the best place to ask it. My cousin got one a couple years ago on ebay for like $60, and now he's putting it back on ebay for $120. I told him that's an insane amount for a poster and nobody is going to pay it, but he insisted that since it's rare and he got it framed that it will sell. So my question is, just exactly how rare is that poster, and how much do you think it's really worth?

How much is it worth? I don't really know, but it can't be the $120 asking price. On the other hand, the rule of eBay is that something is worth what it sells for. And someone is certainly bound to buy it because insanity is the name of the game there.

Konami made posters for several of their first releases (about 10). They were available via mail order from an insert in game boxes. I think the posters sold for somewhere in the $8.00 range. I'll have to look at my inserts to see if I can find an exact price as well as a list of available titles.

A lot of Konami's famous stuff had posters made...from the ad scan I've seen, Blades of Steel, Top Gun, Contra and probably Jackal had posters in addition to Castlevania.

Neat poster, but I wouldn't pay $120 for it...still, they don't show up often.

I've never seen one before. Personally I wouldn't pay more than $50 for it, but I bet someone would give him the $120 he wants.

Just searched ebay for "Castlevania poster" and found this

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=187&item=8162961582&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

So i guess this is it. Its matching the price and description atleast :)

Imo this is way too much for a poster. Its not even mint. You can see it on the picture where its hanging on the wall, looks like theres a huge bump in it :(

I really want a Castlevania poster (I used to have one, but my father threw it away ), but $120 is just too much. I believe the last Castlevania poster I saw on eBay sold for $30 or so (unframed), but that was quite some time ago.

Konami made some quality posters. I bought a full set back in the '80s and still have several of them including Contra, Rush 'n Attack and Gradius. I remember selling Double Dribble to a schoolmate for $5 (I generally don't care for sports games so I didn't want it). The posters are certainly not common and they're definitely cool, but... they're just posters. I can't see myself paying more than $25 (unframed). I'm sure others would pay more, but I'd be really shocked if he gets $120 for it, even with a frame.

Yeah that's it. I told him he should put a low starting bid and that would probably encourage a bunch of people to have a bid war on it. I am going to call him later today, maybe I'll be able to talk him into lowering the price.

The most I'd ever pay for a single poster is $50 - and that's only for one certain poster that hasn't been on ebay for over a year.

Other than that, $20 is my max - and that includes overseas shipping.

What certain poster would that be??

There's this one poster I'd really like to have, and it originally sold for around $25. However, this crazy collector I know will pay pretty much whatever it takes to get something when he wants it. He got in a bidding war and bought it for around $70, and it totally screwed up the price. There was only one or two sellers who ever sold the poster, and they figured they could get the same amount on future listings. It was listed over and over for around that amount or slightly less (when they realized they couldn't get $70). After awhile, it pretty much stopped showing up on eBay, and I ultimately never got a copy. :/ Hopefully I'll be able to get it eventually.

I like that frame in that auction. o_O That's exactly what my Star Ocean 3 poster desperately needs. It's been sitting around rolled up for months.

Can you PM me what poster you are looking for? I'm not a poster collector, but I am a packrat and may just have it.

Me? I'm looking for the Star Ocean: Blue Sphere poster, which was a Japanese promotional poster. I doubt anyone here has ever even seen or heard of it, let alone owns it. :P

Just how were these posters "given out" by Konami back in the day?

Were they something you had to send for? How much were they?

The third one down on that page. "The legend is reborn."

I believe it was given out at E3. It used to go on ebay all the time - the Mario and Metroid ones seemed to be a bit more common though. A shame I never picked one up then - they were going for $20 or so + shipping.

Now, $50 is the most I'd pay for it - ie, if it came up on ebay, I'd be in a bidding war up to $50 to get it, but I wouldn't go over that. Otherwise I'd much prefer to trade something or pay somewhere in the $30 range for it.

Yet to find one though.

Personally I wouldn't pay more than $30 for that poster. It's an amateur framing job and I can see damage to the poster in the form of waviness. If it was professionally framed, I could see paying $75ish for it. I doubt he'll get the money he's looking for for it, but it IS neat. I think he'd be better off asking $60 for it, as that frame doesn't add squat to the value and it'll cost triple to ship it in the frame.

Hehe.. I dont understand why they changed link's apperance. Now he looks so strange. Anyone remember the comic of zelda and link in the begining of the 90's? Now that is how link and zelda should look.

I'd pay a good deal for any Marathon or System Shock store poster (by that I mean $90-ish for the Marathon one, which is a bit more than the only one I've seen on eBay went for). Something shipped out to people? Bah.

Yeah this is my opinion as well. Take it out of the cheapie frame roll it & mail in one of the priority mail mailing tubes. Lot cheaper to send rolled, alot less likely to be damaged.

$$$ could see in the $50-75 personally, I would pay $100+ for posters store displays if it was something more appealing to me, not for those Konami jobs. They do pop up from time to time on ebay, if you're looking.

I believe Stinger was made up as a poster as well. Some cool art, but really how many posters can one have & actually get use out of in one room/house/whatever. Heck that one poster's over 4sf of gaming space! Could have higher shelves full of games instead of teh artwork. ;)

The Konami posters were free, with something like $3 s&h. The original offer was in an issue of Nintendo Fun Club News. Go look through them (if you have them) and you'll find it. I actually remember it being on the right side of the page.

I cut out the order form and sent in for the Rush n' Attack poster, which I still have. It's about the only poster I still have up from that far back (1987), and in spite of the numerous moves it has made, it's still in good shape.

Only a buck! Oh yeah, I had 2 subscriptions to Fun Club News, in case you're wondering why the coupon is still there.

I wish I had ordered all of them for $7.50!!

That Castlevania poster is the one poster I've yearned for for many years, but I certainly wouldn't pay $120 for that particular one due to the reasons already mentioned.

I talked to my cousin on the phone and told him to lower the price. Then he decided he didn't want to sell it anymore if he couldn't get over $100 for it, so I think he took the auction down. He's better off keeping it anyway. It's a good collectable and he told me himself he was going to get back into video game collecting.

I bet the guy that decided on the Double Dribble poster is probably kicking himself right now. Man I would love to have that Contra poster. MMMM....gaming posters. After I finish the NES collection, those might be next on my list of acquisitions.
