I'm trying to figure out if you guys are really young, or just didn't buy PlayStation games in 1995 and 1996! My first longbox game was ESPN Extreme, purchased new at launch.

See I didnt get my First LongBox until a few years ago either (probably 2001ish). I also didnt start with the PS at launch (I started in 99), but im not a "young" one.

Though I think most of the earlier posters are young... except for that Perkar, hes an old old old man. ;)

I think that my first was Darkstalkers. My most recent long box find was Return Fire. :) The one that I would most like to get is X-Com: UFO Defense (but then I'd need to get a PlayStation mouse, too). My favorite long box game is Resident Evil.

Same here, I started with the PlayStation in '99 too, with the new $100 MSRP and the release of Star Ocean 2. I don't know if Joe would consider my age (22) "really young", though. ;P

I'm in the process of getting my first longbox games right now. To be honest, not many of the longbox games are titles that actually interest me. I already have one longbox (Battle Arena Toshinden 2) and some longbox games missing their cases and manuals (King's Field, Doom, etc.) in the collection, but since these were all acquired by my boyfriend, the ones I'm getting now are the first ones that I personally have purchased.

The first longbox I picked up was V-Tennis last summer, which I later sold to another person on DP once I realized I was never going to play it. The only longbox I own at the moment is Destruction Derby. I pass up sports titles all the time, though.

And for the record, I'm 22, and I've never owned a Playstation. I play all my PSX games on my PS2, which I got in 2001.

My first longbox title was Ridge Racer which came in one of the Saturn/SegaCD style cases. My only other longbox title is A-Train, which has a cardboard box, but as a bonus there's a SimCity CCG booster pack in it...someone please tell me I'm not the only one who's played that game at some point. :embarrassed:

The first longbox I had was Loaded, but I don't have it anymore. I also didn't get a PSX untill later in it's life, August '97, I had to have it before FFVII came out :) Eventually I want to get a complete collection of longboxes.

For me, Doom's in the cardboard box, Zoop and V-Tennis in the plastic cases.

I just picked up my 53rd this weekend. They're getting harder to find, but it's one collection I'd like to complete. They bring back fond memories of the early days of the Playstation, filled with wonder.
My first was Power Serve 3D Tennis, which I bought when it was released the week before the PS even came out. Once I played it the morning after the midnight PS launch, I said "this is next gen gaming?" and returned it for Ridge Racer. Crazy enough I bought it again last month for $1.99.

I got my Playstation in 97 (I think) and my first game was a longbox. I was at a store with a demo unit set up playing Resident Evil. That was it for me, I traded in my SNES and a couple games for it.

I lived with a couple of girls at the time and they came home one night while I was playing it. They watched for an hour or so and we talked about stuff at the same time. The next morning they both commented on the wierd dreams they had invoving the game.

Are these really so rare? I saw Loaded recently.

Some are more common than others. I see Wipeout all over the place, but never Psychic Detective.

My first was King's Field, about six months after the system's release. I nearly cried when I played for about two hours and realized that I had forgotten to buy a memory card with the system. LOL

@Aussie: Compared to Joe, 22 IS very young. ;)

I bought my first PS1 about 4 or 5 months after it debuted. I'm not sure what all games I bought at first but I think Battle Arena Toshinden may have been one of them. Ridge Racer was another I got very early. I wouldn't mind having more longbox games...I don't have that many actually.

That's the first longbox that I got too. Bought it with the system sometime in 1996, those were good days man. Of course, the brittle plastic case shattered several years ago.

I never owned a Playstation, so I didn't buy Playstation games until I bought a PS2. I never really thought about buying long box's until I saw the pictures posted here of a complete PS1 collection. I just marveled at how good they looked. I've got about 35 now and I definately prefer the cardboard cases to the plastic ones. I decided recently not to collect any of the sports titles and go for everything else. In fact, I had bought a very nice condition 'NHL Face Off' when I first started collecting them and gave it to someone here who just needed the manual. I figured with it gone, I wouldn't be tempted any more to go for a complete collection. I just know I would never have played a sports game and figure it's best to leave them in the wild for people who might enjoy them.
One wierd thing for me is that my local EB store sells the long box versions the cheapest. I've never seen one for more than $4.99, no matter what the title. It's like they think that nobody wants them, perhaps because they are the oldest titles. Too bad that 7 out of 10 are incomplete and so are not worth picking up. But they had V-Tennis there for the longest time for $1.99. Maybe I should have broken my rule on sports games for that one.
I do remember my first one though, and it's still my favorite - "Raiden Project". Too bad I had to get that on Ebay! The other plastic case ones I have are X-Com: UFO Defense, Battle Arena Toshinden, NovaStorm, ShockWave Assault, Hi-Octane, CyberSled, Tekken, Total Eclipse, ViewPoint, and Air Combat.
I really do prefer the soft case ones better though, looks wise. Primal Rage, Loaded, Space Griffon VF-9, StarBlade Alpha, and Jupiter Strike have nice artwork. In the Hunt, WarHawk, Doom and Resident Evil manage to look good and be great games.
It say's here on the Philosoma box that EGM Buyer's Guide voted it 'Best Shooter of the Year'. Hmmm, that must have been a slow year for shooters! LOL

I like how D's title is horizontal on the spine. :) Pretty much the only title that could fit that way is a one-letter title. :P

Didn't you have a photo with all of them with their covers up? I'd like to see that again if you still have it. The search feature isn't working for me again. :(

Mine was Discworld. Purchased it last May. Not really in to non RPG PS1 games, but some of the Longbox titles intrigue me. Also fun to collect subcollections. So far I have Descent, Primal Rage, Loaded, Doom, In the Hunt, Discworld, and Resident Evil. All fun games. All Complete

I say, is that Rise 2: Resurrection in the next-to-lowest row?

It's remarkable how many of those games seem to have PC ports.

The only longbox that I own is "The Raiden Project", which I acquired when an eBay seller threw it in for free with a Saturn lot because he "couldn't get it to work".
