I have a nice Gamestop story to tell, and a brief description of my very relaxing weekend. A top-loading Nintendo is also involved.
First, the Gamestop...
I was coming back from a brief vacation in the mountains of Georgia and stopped at a Gamestop in what I think was called Jasper, a small mountain town on a road that is noting but small mountain towns, one after the other. On the way there, I had seen the Gamestop store at a stripmall (like many of you, my eyes constantly scout stripmalls looking for EBgames, Gamestop, and other such stores.)
I had seen the store on the way up the mountain, but we were in a caravan and couldn't stop or we'd get lost.
I nagged my boyfriend into stopping on the way back (despite his whining), and I browsed the store while he smoked outside. It was only 10:15 or so in the morning, but the store was open and the clerk seemed friendly and chatty. I asked him if they carried Dreamcast games as the one here in Atlanta still gets stock and sells for 1/2 price, but he said no. We chatted about the COLD WEATHER and shit like that. I picked up a cheap PSone game and a couple of complete N64 racing games, but nothing really good... my total bill was like $10.
As I was looking around, I heard the clerk say to someone
"No, we don't buy those anymore. Leave me your number and I'm sure one of the employees here will buy them off you."
I peeked around the corner and looked at the clerk. He saw me looking and said to the guy with the games
"Oh, this guy here might buy them off you."
I went over and looked at the stack... six Dreamcast games, HotD and Shenmue on top. I figured, great, common crap and sports games.
I dug through the pile... the next four games were Marvel vs Capcom 2, Street Fighter 3, KoF '99, and Street Fighter Alpha 3. All games I have been looking for, all complete! (I'm a big Capcom fighting game fan.) MvC2 generally goes for $20 or more by itself, so I thought it was a good selection of games in and of itself. Had I stopped by at any other time besides THAT MINUTE, I would have missed out.
I offered him $25 for the lot (they were all complete in A+ condition.) He took it, no questions or counter-offer. I gave Shenmue (blech) and HotD to my boyfriend (he also has a DC) and away we went.
I thought it was VERY nice of the clerk to let me buy them. I know, they weren't going to buy them anyway and all that, but it was still nice. It seems some of the other employees were into DC games, but the guy with the games wanted to buy something right then and I was certainly willing to bargin right in front of the clerk if he was willing.
:D
Earlier in the weekend, we went to a shitty, shitty flea market in North Carolina... a lot of unlicenced Disney and Hello Kitty crap for $1, ugly country-ass furniture, dishes, romance books, videotapes, roasted corn stands, that sort of thing. One guy had a table FULL of boxed games, so I went and looked at the complete N64 titles. A lot of stuff for $40 or more. A complete (but former rental) Ogre Battle for $70. Way overpriced, every stinking one of them. PSone games for at least $20. Again, all overpriced, nothing that good except for some RPG's for $30-40. Then I saw the NES top-loader on the table... I asked how much. $25! Just $5 than the regular, probably "blinky" NES front-loader. I could have got him down a bit, but I thought $25 was a great price for a good condition top loader, so I bought it and away I went.
So... a rare top loader for $25, followed by a set of DC games I've been wanting for $25. Coincidence? I think not!
Ok, it WAS total coincidence, but it was still pretty cool.
The mountain house we stayed at had a HUGE hot tub, a pool table, 2 fireplaces, an air hocky table, darts, a great kitchen, and superb views. We brought food and liquor and lots of beer and ate like pigs and drank like fish and played with the fire and relaxed in the hottub and played cards and I even got some non-gamers into Typing of the Dead, Soul Calibur, and Crazy Taxi 2.
All in all, a great weekend.
Cheers
