This is very cool. I'm new to this emulation stuff, and happy to play the games I played when I was younger. I have a usb gamepad, and I "configured" the joystick. But some games will not respond to the configuration. Why is that? Some games don't work some do, why and how can I isolate the good from the bad, AND where can I find all the good? (whew!)
The macmame version I am using is 66 (?)
I am running OS 9.1, and I have 394 mb of ram, ATI Rage (stock), 350 mhz, on a g3 blue and white tower. Also my mouse is a trackball, so I want to use that for Centipede/Millepede, rampart etc.
At work I'm using a G5 dual 1.8ghz, with 1.25 gigs of ram. Nice piece of machinery ,however I can't take this home. Flack, you seem like a very knowledgable guy dealing with this stuff, can you help a fellow retro gamer out?

I'm ready to leave to go home. I'm guessing 1 or 2 things about my post.
1. I'm a loser because I work with Macs as compared to a PC
2. I'm a loser because I can't figure it out on my own.
Besides that, have a great night, no hard feelings here but I still want to join that MAME club, how do I do that?

I will add you to the MAME Club, no problem there. As for your other question, hang in there; not all questions get answered within 3 hours. You'll have to wait for someone who uses both MAME and a Mac to get help on that one!

My MAME cab runs on a G3 233, and I'm also running 9.1 and MacMAME .66 so it sounds like we're dealing with similar hardware/ software.
As far as getting the games to work with your game pad goes, I'm not sure about that one. My control panel is wired through a USB iPac encoder, which the Mac sees as a keyboard. My assumption is that you're going to need to set up the games that are not recognising your game pad. Open a game that isn't working with your controller and hit TAB, the configuration menu will come up. I'm not at home so I can't guide you through it any further than that off the top of my head. I'll try to remember to dig out a game pad and see what it takes to get MacMAME to recognise it this weekend.
Trackball games should already be working with your mouse or trackball by default. If not you can go through the same process as above. Again, I'll check this over the weekend.

Oh, it just occured to me, are you using a gamepad with an analog stick? Most games won't use analog controls, if you have a pad with a digital directional pad, try that instead.

Thanks for the info
Last night I finally figured it out. I hit Ecs then tab and manually changed the settings. My trackball worked on centipede/millipede. As far as screenshots, some are upside down or sideways. That's fine but rightside up would be ideal. I can rotate them in photoshop, but I'm afraid macmame would crash if I fiddle with the png files. Where can I get a list of the good, the bad and the ugly roms for this? Emunation is my best source so far, but I have to go to KLOV to check them out.
2 more things, thank you for the input, and what do you recommend trying out in the future?

By screenshots, do you mean screeshots that you make while playing, or screenshots that you download from other sources? If it's the latter, then I'd simply suggest to replace those that are sideways/upside down with new screenshots taken during a game (it's a good idea to hit ESC or command-period first to pause the game while you're taking the screenshot).
What do you mean by "the good, the bad and the ugly roms"? Do you just mean ROMs that are compatible with MacMAME 0.66? If that's the case, good luck. I find that ever since mame.dk shut down, it's difficult to find ROMs that will or will not work on a given version (mame.dk was very good at indicating clearly which copy of the ROM worked with which version of MAME). If all you need is game suggestions, aside from the usual classics (see the game list on classic games compilations like Midway Arcade Treasures, Atari Anthology and Namco Museum for suggestions), I'd check the list of past "MAME of the week" posts. You'll find some lesser known but usually interesting games in those posts.

Thanks for the info...
I go to Emucation.net (or .com?) for mame roms.
Not enough info on which will work though but their is a lot of roms there.
By means of the good the bad and the ugly, I'm just looking for oddball recommendations, games that I shouldn't pass up besides the sleepers in the DP website. Games that are worth checking out.
