I gave up long ago on the pro mags, but I am considering giving them a second chance. What are the best/worst do you think?

Play, definitely. Now is a good time to get into it too, since they just revamped their review system (sadly, this is I believe their third revision in 4 years!). Anyway, these guys (and gal) write about games with the kind of enthusiasm you rarely see from their competition.

Game Informer is alright too, but they're two different mags completely.

Is that the best you can do? Can we get a mod to kick GRG off of DP for good? Nobody likes you. Just leave! I'm clearly everyones favorite. ha ha ha.

I don't mean to cause trouble. GRG just pisses me off. He thinks he's so much better than everyone else on here. Play magazine rocks!

Yeah, play in my opinion, is the only game magazine worth reading. They have a tendency to lean towards the less mainstream games, which is exactly what I'm looking for in a magazine.

Game Informer blows.

I so totally agree with that.

Uh, anyways, I'd say GamesTM is a decent magazine. Of course it'll cost you dearly if you wish to subscribe.

I love Retro Gamer Magazine, but then again I have next to no interest of current gaming outside of what I read about it on DP. It's costly though, coming from the other side of the pond.

Games TM is probably the best 'zine in the world. Very thick and simlilar feel to Next Gen. Can't go wrong, but that price...ouch.

Last I looked, EGM was going down the toilet in terms of writing quality and GamePro wasn't much better.

Agree? Disagree?

Same here. Another vote for "don't waste your money on Game Informer; it's wretched".

Edge magazine is really good, although a bit pricey

GamePro doesn't deserve to be mentioned at all. It's just that terrible. While EGM isn't the greatest, it's hardly the worst out there.

Damn, sorry to hear about GamePro. Is it still the way it was back in the late 90's as the "kiddie" periodical with ridiculous ratings?

So sad to see the current state of EGM - as that used to be my favorite mag of all time. I remember waiting for each issue to arrive in the pre-snes days. I would then read it cover to cover several times....

I hadn't read it in a long time, so I picked up the current issue at the durgstore. Its turned into a crappy rag!

I would also like to put in a good word for Retro Gamer - but it is too expensive.

Play is the best game mag out there (It's even cooler now that I know one of the writers). After that is probably Game Informer. I really like Games TM, but the store I was getting it at stopped carrying it. Retro Gamer is pretty cool, but they tend to focus a little too much on British exclusives and the like. GMR was pretty good, but they just put out their last issue.

I just wanted to pop in and also show my support for Play. It is the only Mag I would even consider buying. Other than that, I stick to the net for all my gaming info. I also get OXBM, GI, and GamePro for free. Nothing too great there. Sad that XBN is gone. I kinda liked the mag. remined me a bit of the old DC mag.

On a side note:

I was checking out a PSm from japan that a co-worker had. This mag was so damn sexy. Makes me wish our USA mags could look that good and have something worth reading about.

GRG roxxxxz btw.

Play

No doubt. Not only is Play a good magazine in it's own right, but it was (is?) produced by the same people who brought us Gamefan,Gamer's Republic and the short lived Game Go! magazines. Which in my mind, were some of best american gaming mags ever.

XBN! I just got the latest one today (argh, two corners were a bit dinged up...damned USPS, first time I really wanted to get the copy with my name on it they muck it up! Grr) and it's great! :p

Of course, we all know XBN has been cancelled, right? That is the final issue..."for awhile" they say. The teases! I actually never cared all that much for Play...they devote space to anime and music. I figure if I pick up a gaming magazine, I want it to be 100% devoted to games. Actually, I think I'm burning out on magazines finally. Some magazines I just fllip through now and throw them out. I don't think I'm going to renew any of them but several of them go on for awhile. I think EGM's not scheduled to expire for me until next year.

I've never really looked at it as throwing anime and DVD coverage 'instead of game coverage' as much as they're covering related entertainment. Besides that, the anime and DVD sections never get more than about 10 pages combined. I consider it a unique extra. Besides that, two of the 3 consoles on the market play DVDs and there are tons of anime crossover games and such so that it's a logical extension. Hey, at least they aren't doing 'Dog Food Roundup' or 'Nancy's Intro to Crocheting' at the end of their issues. Another important part of them covering this, I imagine, is that there is extra ad revenue. Anime companies are more likely to send their advertising dollars to a company that covers anime and are generally fans of it. My favorite thing about Play is that (and this is probably somewhat of a result of their market share) they LOVE the underdogs. Nowhere else will you see games like Voodoo Vince on the cover with a huge spread and interview with the developers. Expanding on that, and justifying their DVD section is their interview with Bruce Campbell a few months ago (related to Bubb HoTep). My subscription expires soon and the choice of whether or not to renew is a no-brainer.

About XBN, I've always felt it would be nice for THEM to get the rights to include a demo disc and get the funding MS could shower them with, instead of OXM, which is more or less "that free rag that comes with the $9 demo disc."

Besides Digital Press, the best magazine is game informer. It has the classic section that is very interesting along with great reviews of the new games. Check it out!!
