Spotted this near the start. Wanted it. Despite selling up my collection, every inch of the collector inside me was drooling over it ... I stayed pretty interested up until it reached about 150 Euros or so. But that end price ... wow. There's not much more to say ...

Is that the European version of the CDX, the combo Genesis/Sega CD unit?

Is it rare?

It is the European version of the CDX. It's probably a bit harder to find, but not extremely rare. However, for some reason, it is unusual to find one boxed, and extremely rare to see one in that condition, with all the baggies and other inserts - down to the original Sega "Mega Power" batteries. And the pack in CD games looked as if they were still sealed.

I've never seen one in that condition before and wouldn't expect to again in the next five years!

Mmm, yummy Multi-Goodness. I've yet to see a Japanese one, though, which is strange given the size of the unit - should have been popular there (but I guess Sega was busy with those Mega Jets and regular systems, eh?)

Is it just me or do those batteries look leaked?

General consensus has it that they weren't released in Japan - it's thought that the few that have been spotted in Akihabara shops were Asian imports. There was a really long thread about it at Assembler not long back.
I'd guess that it's non-release was due to the relative underperformance of the Wondermega and other combo-units, and the fact that the MD market in Japan died much earlier than in the US & Europe.

Oh, and €400? @_@ That's just fuggin' nuts.

If they aren't you can bet they would be eventually.

Is there any way to preserve batteries?

I definitely wouldn't pack them back in that box and put it on a shelf for the next two years & forget about them. @_@
