News: PSP goes wireless?

Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Ken Kutaragi has revealed plans of creating an accessory attachment to give cell phone and wireless functionality to its PlayStation Portable gaming system.

Stating plans for the adaptor were "in the near future," this development comes at no surprise. Largely speculated when Sony filed patent applications, the announcement confirms rumors that wireless add-ons were in planning.

In addition to providing communication features, Sony's PlayStation Portable could download games via public Wi-Fi hot spots and swap content with the console version of the PlayStation.

When Nokia released the N-Gage, the concept of integrating portable gaming devices with wireless communication seemed logical; providing multiplayer game play across the Internet. Unfortunately, the N-Gage never took off.

Sony hopes to be more successful. Entering the portable game market last month in Japan, Sony has already sold over 800,000 units. Expected release in North America and Europe will be at the end of March this year.

What ever happened to the voice translator? Where you play with a buddy in Japan, talk and the PSP translates it into rough Japanese speech for your buddy...damn pipe dreams.

Man, they're at it again hardcore with the PS3 and the Cell technology.

4 Cell processors running at 4.6ghz each with a double leap in video technology using roughly a GeForce 7.5 (the GeForce 6 line just came out and is capable of absolutely unbelievable calculations).

Chances of this actually happening? None. Absolutely none. Each Cell processor is said to run at 85c using a passive cooling solution. I know it's not x86 technology, but cmon, only 85c at 4.6ghz with PASSIVE cooling? There's no way that thing wont burst into flames without a hefty fan on it... and it's going to have 4 of them inside a fairly small enclosure with nothing even close to something resembling airflow like a computer case.

I believe nothing I hear until E3. Even then, I'll believe very little out of Sony until the system is actually released. I have no doubt that it'll be an absolutely fantasticly powerful (albeit shoddily constructed) machine, but there's no way it'll reach the current lofty expectations, especially within the $300 breaking point.

Yes, and Sega, Nintendo, and Atari have paid dearly for their sins. However, Sony hasn't, nor will they, since they have a huge lead in the console wars, and a pretty nice lead in the number of fanboys they have at their side.

this is something people have tend to ignore, wich, was one of the big selling points for me, but seeing it ain't coming, i ain't buyin'.

I hope youre right but if the fanboy comment was directed at me, I was making a point that every console has had the same pump & dump problem.
Anyway, back on topic...I couldnt care less about the cell phone functionality. I plan to have some good times on WIFI in Seattle though! Maybe downloading minigames or stomping some fool in some Wipeout Pure!

I wonder if PSP repair will become another rapidly growing cottage industry like PS2 repair is? In my tiny town alone we have five places advertising PS2 repair services...

Anyway...I can see where this is going...2 dozen people picking my posts apart. -_- The point I was making is that every console has had the pump & dump problem and no console ever measures up to the hype...ever. So dont bother skipping a Sony product simply because they had ideas that didnt turn out to be profitable. Agree or disagree...Im too sleepy to argue. :shameful:

Damn Cleatis...and I'm actually one of the few people around here that likes you.

ROB, Virtual Boy, Power Pad, Zapper, Super Scope 6, Seca CD, 32X, and Menacer all actually came out. And all of those tings are considered pretty cool by most classic gamers. The problem with Sony is that they start talking about peripherals that they are going to come out with before the system even comes out. We were talking about PS2 hard drives way before the system hit chelves. How mahy years did it take for the HD to come out? How many games support it? Same with online play for the PS2. Granted, a lot more games support online play than the hard drive, but how many years went by before the network adapter came out?

Anyone else remember the PocketStation? PSM hyped the shit out of that peripheral. Then Sony pulls the plug on a US release at the last minute.

The bottom line is that Sony is worried about selling enough PSPs, so they throw a bone to the consumer. "At some point we are going to come out with a wireless adapter..." Why isn't it built in??? The DS has one built in. I like Sony, but they have always been half action, half bullshit.
