View Full Version : Games you ALMOST beat but finally gave up on.

Only 2 come to mind for me.

Snake's Revenge for NES ( My friend wanted it back. I wonder, was the last boss invincible? If I had more time, I might have done it.)

and

GTA London 1969.

I think that whole bloody game had you do it all for nothing. It tells you to kill the Crisp brothers then leads you to an arrow where there is nothing. If there was a way to complete that, it sure as hell fooled me, and I tried several times, always the same result.

Anybody beat those, or are they truly impossible?

Midnight Club 2 PS2 - the difficulty level of the entire game is pretty high, but the last few stages are insane. Has a normally calm guy like myself ready to throw the controller, so I put it down.

Miracle Warriors SMS - back in the day, before online FAQs, etc.
I never solved the last puzzle to find the last area. Whatever the hero's name "was twice as tall as a man". How embarassingly simple it seems now. :embarrassed:

Karateka. I ran instead of walked up to the girl you were trying to save, so she kicked me and I died. Stupidest trick ever. I stopped playing, and only learned many years later what you were supposed to do. It still makes no sense.

A lot of those older games had nonsensical puzzles that didn't fit any context provided for the player. Like that note in the witch's cottage in King's Quest that said "Sometimes it is better to think backwards" and referred to a puzzle in a completely unrelated setting that itself offered no clue as to why one might want to think "backwards" with regards to it. There are so many others, but I don't want to go further off topic.

prince of persia 1- Got through 50% of the game, and then got to a part where you gotta walk all around walls in like 10 secs to get somewhere. Bah to hard.

Hmm

For the past 12 years I have played Zelda lttp up to the final dungeon and just seemed to stop playing.
Twice with two different SNES carts and now most recently with the GBA.

Strange because I played the original gameboy one all the way through.

I wonder what the psychological barrier is here...

(NES)Fester's Quest- I can always get to the final boss, but if you die you have to go ALL the way back to the original starting point of the game and walk ALL the way back to the boss. Snore. I have never beat it and never tried after the initial death.

(SNES) Super Star Wars. That freakin' Death Star is just too hard to get through. I'm still trying in theory, but I've pretty much given up hope.

(PC) Might and Magic VII- I just got bored.

Luigi's mansion (stupid last boss)
Star Ocean on the PS1 - don't remember why on this one, think it just started to get too long, or I got sidetracked on something....

Pokemon Yellow - I think I made it to the final fight with Gary once. I'd like to finish the game someday, but I'd want to start over now that the true trick to catching any Pokemon has been found.

Viewtiful Joe - GOt to the anti-Joe and never could beat him

Star Ocean: The 2nd Story - Got almost all the way through the game and realized I couldn't beat it because I didn't have a full party....failed to find a BUNCH of characters.

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon - got to Dracula and he was RIDICULOUS...gave up rather than bothering to build levels

Albert Odyssey - Got to the final 4 bosses and then lost my save! Doh!

Dragon Force - Got to the VERY end where I'm chasing the last character around and lost my save.

Phantasy Star IV - Got to the final boss and flat out could NOT beat him...wasn't high enough level and didn't want to wander around building up.

Those are the ones I can think of....

Edit:

The Thing (PS2) - Got almost all the way to the end and ran out of ammo. Sucked.

Silent Hill (PSX) - Got to the end section and failed to do an important thing so I could only get the bad ending.

Castlevania- I can always get to the last level, but then there is the room where you are inside and the eagles are dropping egors all over the place. I always either die, or lose so much life that there is no point to continue.

The first Shadow Hearts

Just got really really really bored with it at the end..... the boss fights were all just the same thing over and over and they were made "difficult" just by the fact that the boss has a few trillion hp. Just figured I knew what was going to happen anyway, so why bother.

I've got a BAD problem beating final bosses on RPG's, I wing up giving up.

Final Fantasy VII - Quit at the cave you go in to fight sephiroth, that one screen where you enter the cave at still haunts my memories.

Final Fantasy VIII - Can't remember where I quit

Final Fantasy X - Battle with Sin.

tuxedojoe
01-22-2005, 11:36 AM
Romancing Saga 3 - I got about 30% into the game and just quit.
Final Fantasy X - Quit right before Sin
Zelda: Wind Waker - Damn, this game was just terrible. I quit after about 6 hours.
Skies of Arcadia - Got up to the final boss on DC, quit, and started again later. I quit again. Then, I tried playing it on the GC, and I never finished it.

Shining the Holy Ark, last boss battle. Recently it's been Metroid Prime. I can't get past the omega pirate. I'm not really sure how far through the game that is, but I can't do it.

PSX:

Mega Man 8, I couldn't get past the first area of Wily's castle

Mega Man X4 I could never finish the game with Zero

Final Fantasy Origins, started playing 1, barely touched the 2nd..and then put it aside

NES:

Blaster Master, always got the final level, but never could get out that stupid spikey pitted area

Fester's Quest, nope, never finished it, fun but a pain at times

SMS:

Shinobi, I can't even get past the 3rd Boss

GameBoy:

CastleVania Adventure, I can't get passed level 3 when the spikes keep coming closer and closer from under you

Genesis:

Rocket Knight Adventues, stopped playing it when I arrived at the final stage and I have never been able to get back to it since.

I've been trying to beat Difficulty Level 4 of the ATARI 2600 game "Smurf: Rescue In Gargamel's Castle" for about 20 years now and I still can't get past the last few screens. I will never give up trying periodically, but 20 years and I still cant beat it!! @_@ Man it's a great game!! :D

Illusion of Gaia - I have a save right at the final boss, but I could never get around to finishing it.

Ninja Gaiden 2 - I got to the final boss, and afterwards, I could never get past level 2. :p

Kabuki Quantum Fighter - I have got to the final boss several times, but I could never beat it.

Nesmaster
01-22-2005, 02:55 PM
Final Fantasy Mystic Quest - was really close to the finish, but i just lost interest and didnt play it, then i put it away :/

Ninja Gaiden 3 - Tried and failed at this game many times. Can get to the final boss with relative ease but never with enough health left to beat him :(

spider-man

Silent bomber - could never beat the last boss' last form.

F-zero gx - couldn't beat the second to last level

super valis 4 - again, couldn't beat the last boss

super r-type - couldn't get past the second to last stage, due to my increasing disinterest with the game (slow paced combined with slowdown isn't a good thing in a shump imo).

GTA London 1969.

I think that whole bloody game had you do it all for nothing. It tells you to hug and kiss the Crisp brothers then leads you to an arrow where there is nothing. If there was a way to complete that, it sure as hell fooled me, and I tried several times, always the same result.

Anybody beat those, or are they truly impossible?

GTA London is definatly possible to complete because I've done it, though it was a long time back I can't remember what you had to do though but it is definatly possible.

Let's see..

Super Mario RPG on a console. I got all the way to Smithy but couldn't beat him. I gave up. Sadly. But later on, I went back through on an emulator and beat him using Freeze states. (Trial and error rocks.) One day I vow to complete it on the console this time.

Earthbound on an emulator. Got as far as I thought was almost the end, but damn, turns out I still had a LONG way to go. I just didn't have the time or patience. Maybe if it's ever brought to the US on the GBA, I'll set time aside again.

Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga on the console. I am up to the final set of battles. But damn, I know I gotta do some more leveling up first. Thanks for the ring tip.

Halo.. What am I thinking? Halo? "Why you be trippin' and not beatin' that sweet azz game, dawg?" (Sorry.) I got to the Library. I hated it, but I went through. Then saved. But some flarking shizzy bug in the damn game made it NOT SAVE SO I HAD TO START AT THE LIBRARY EVERY GOD DAMNED TIME! It wasn't worth my time anymore, so I said "Fuck you, Halo" and shelved it.

Then I got Halo 2. Okay, it was worth it for the collectors box, but in the end, I really don't find it too much fun anymore. Especially with the addition of the Aliens side of the story. I can neer tell who I'm supposed to kill. It's SUPPOSED to be from the HUMAN side! Not both! Dammit. So I shelved that one too.

Same with the GTA games on the Xbox. I'd rather let my brother beat it, then once in a while load his game and play around. Because in the end, GTA's story sucks, but the fun you can have with the environment rocks.

Futurama. Zoidbergs level, while the ONLY ONE he's in, IS THE WORST EVER MADE! WTF? Time limit. Damn racing. Can't slow down or stop. Bad collision. The rest of the game is a HOOT, but Zoidberg's damn level ruins it. So it's temporarily shelved.

Simpson's Hit and Run. I loved it at the beginning. A GTA clone I could enjoy. Then I just hit this one mission I can't pass. So it's shelved.

Jak II. Damn. The first was so fun. But now, once again, the GTA Clone Curse strikes. A MISSION I CAN'T FLARKING BEAT! So it's temporarily shelved. I hate to think about Jak 3 even though I want it so bad. But not until I pass II.

Eternal Darkness is shelved for the time beeing. I wanted to play to see that one scene. But some asswipe at the OCRemix Forums posted a GOD DAMN SCREENSHOT and now it's ruined for me. God damn what a butthead. :(

I guess Mario Kart: DD!!! will technically never be "finished", but I don't technically count it. It's only the really hard stuff I can't pass. The impossible stuff.

I also gave up on the two Oracle Zelda games for GBC. Couldn't hold my interest like the original (Awakening) did.

Ico.. Cool game. Just don't have time. Shelf.

Some former ones..

Pikmin. At one point I gave up because I figured I'd never be able to get 30 pieces. Then I found out I only needed certain ones, but in the end I finally beat it on day 30 with 29 pieces. (It was almost impossible and I just know that even if I tried again, I could never get all 29 before day 30. I'll never get the final piece from the Final Trial. Oh wells. At least I got off the planet. "It was Earth all along!"

Max Payne. I had originally given up on this. But one day I decided to sit down and finally finish it. I finally did. Then I went out and bought 2 and ended up beating that in less than 15 hours... in a row. So I'm glad I decided to go back.

Luigi's Mansion. I had also originally given up here too. But one day decided to finish it. Glad I did. I get more satisfaction knowing I finally beat the game and can retire it knowing my accomplishment rather than giving up and pushing it aside. Seems like more of a waste when I give up.

In the end, only a few games hold my interest for long enough for me to beat it. If I'm lucky, I'll play it non-stop every day until I do. Paper Mario 2, Cubivore, BG&E, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle were all ones that did this. There's a formula to find.

I actually beat Halo all the way through on Legendary, hmm. I haven't tried much of Halo 2 yet...I've yet to see.

Well, other than that, I don't think I ever beat the original Half-Life without using impulse_101 a good bit and probably god and noclip as well :D Freakin' stupid boss. Now, HL2, there's a good game.

Metroid Prime - I recently started playing this again, but a lot of the time I feel that I'd rather be playing something new. First time through I got to the place where you've got to go up some randomly floating ramps but with a ton of Metroids in the area. I didn't give up so much as just stop playing.

Phantasy Star II...took a hiatus from that quite a while back as I started to explore Dezolis.

Actually, I can't think of anything else at the moment that I gave up near the end...I'm sure there's a bunch though.

Castlevania-It's relatively smooth sailing up to Frankenstein's monster (and that invincible little $#!t Igor), but after that, pure hell. Presuming that I can even *get* to the Grim Reaper, he usually beats me down.

Goldeneye-Towards the end, when you have to make sure the guards don't waste what's-her-face before she can disable the satellite. Pure evil, I tell you.

Ghosts 'N Goblins-Duh.

Ewww I HATED that last level!!! I beat that legitimately, but I came very close to giving up. It's so ALMOST impossible it's not even funny.

You need an incredible amount of skill and luck for that one, but persist and you'll do it. Sorry if I reopened a can of worms. x_x

For me, it was Metroid Prime.

[unimportant story]
I had never gotten into the Metroid series, and probably never would have if it wasn't for that Metroid Prome Hunters 2 Demo that Nintendo gave out for free. I loved that demo, aside from the fact that I had a defective disk that I couldn't get replaced (Damn you, Nintendo!!). So I decided to go out and buy Metroid Prime. It was an amazing game, that I played the hell out of. That was of course until I got to...
[/unimportant story]

The either last or second last boss, I forget which one. either way, I never got back into it.

Test Drive for the PC. It's a direct port of Test Drive for the PS2 & XBOX. I raced all the races in the career mode and unlocked all the cars except one. The Dodge Viper GTS. The conditions were that if I won a series of 4 races against this car, that I would get the car. So I did this, but I had to use 4 different cars to do it, because each of the 4 tracks required a different type of car to really have a chance of winning. Well big surprise, all I managed to unlock was a different new car. The Ford GT40. Now they wanted me to use that car to win a series of 4 more races against the Viper GTS before they would finally let me have it. I tried to do this several times, and it was impossible. The top speed of the GTS is 40MPH faster than the top speed of the GT. The GTS handles perfectly and never spins out. The GT slides all over the road. Finally I said fuck it, downloaded the cheat, and got the GTS. So I don't know how the story in career mode ends, but I think that it was cheap as hell to tell me I had to win 4 races for the car, which I did, and then tell me I have to win 4 more races using a car that's vastly inferior to the car that I'm supposed to beat. To hell with that bullshit, I stole the car.

FF VII (PS) - heard raves about it, tried it, got bored. Didnt even make it thru the 1st disc. Found out RPGs arent my bag, baby.

Ape Escape 2 (PS2)- good game to begin w/- diff level very gradual thru the game, fun, original, lots of unlockables, almost seems made for kids...then...

BAM! 3/4 through it I get to the moonbase (last level?) &, after a hard time getting through the last structure, there's a spinny thing I'm supposed to jump on/get across. Well, I tried over a dozen times, so I just said F it & tossed the disc across the room. I refuse to ever play it again.

Midnight Club (PS2)- got all the way to the last driver, never caught him, seemed impossble, so I quit. Disappointed to read/hear MC 2 is also hard. I was gonna start it today!

Beyond Good & Evil- yeah, yeah, heresy. This is one of those games where I go back & forth to a guide just to make sure I'm doing it right. I'm at the slaughterhouse gate & just pushed open a big door w/ Double H & lost interest in the game. I still have the save but I'm not compelled to go back to it. Plus winning the pearl in that stupid air-hockey game in the Akuda Bar seems damn near impossible too.

Right now I'm into Everblue 2, a scuba-diving sim. It's so addicting it's all I've played for a month. I've lost sleep from playing it. I'm seeing this one all the way through!

Chrono Trigger is an excellent game! Plenty of replay value too with around 12 different endings and new weapons and armor upon completing the game the first time(rainbow sword, rainbow armor) I leveled up all of my characters to the max and on new game plus beat Lavos with just Chrono and got the best ending in the game. If I remember correctly you will probably want your characters to be leveled up to the 70's in order to beat Lavos easily.

I forgot to mention the game I gave up on. That game would be "Zelda: The Windwaker". I have everything in the game and spent a lot of time doing so, but I can't get past the #$*!@* catepillar right before you meet Ganon. You have to shoot it's tail while it moves with an arrow. Very frustrating to get that far and try as I might I can never beat this boss. Probably harder than Ganon.
