Hehe shit.. this is a crazy price!
You can get a car for the same price :)

"Only 2 of these 5 had electronics inside, mine not, but it's still a crazy item, certainly the most wanted by every serious collectors"

Does this mean that you cant even use it?

Yeah, that's what I'm guessing. However, it is an amazing collectors piece nonetheless.

There are two known working protoypes. One is owned by the Atari Muesum, the great site that Curt runs. The second (if I recall correctly) is susposed to belong to the original designer.

So yes, the seller is selling of the three known copies of Cosmos that don't work. They were made for demostration at the shows and what not.

Wow. That is too cool.

I have a question, though - what is the stuff on the console's screen in the "at least I tried" shot? I understand that the holograms are like cels or overlays. Is that just refraction off the screen, since it doesn't have any electronics inside?

That would be a real collectible, I wish that Atari had been able to make the project viable so we'd all have the experience of having played one.

I always said if one came up on ebay I would buy it, or at least be in the running. It would be worth selling off part of my colledction for... but that is out of hand expensive. To bad it's so expensive cause that is a really cool piece of gaming history. I have an asteroids hologram. :-P

Basically, the Cosmos would've used the holograms to overlay what was essentially some pretty 2-D stuff that wouldn't have looked nearly as impressive as the overlays. I seem to remember our own Bill Kunkel, who saw it on display at one of the '80 or '81 CES shows, saying that it was probably for the best that it never got released - but I could be misattributing that.

Very collectible, yeah, but for that kind of money I'd want it working; and truth be told, I'd rather have a working Game Brain (precursor to the 2600) than a Cosmos.

Ok, so this is bascily just a empty handheld with no electronic things inside?
That is some realy expencive plastic :)
I know its rare, but still.. a non working handheld for this price is insane imo.

They made a mention on the ScreenSavers when this went on auction. Looks like nobody has tried to buy it yet.

The guy has been holding onto that thing for over 20 years, waiting for the right time to sell it. He just overestimated how much people want to spend on a piece of plastic, I guess. I think if it were going for maybe 5K instead of 20K, he might have a buyer or three.

I really hope the person who ends up winning this auction is REALLY RICH!!! I can't even accept a person spending thousands on that item. It seriously looks like it would cost $5 at a grocery store. LOL

There's not much in the gaming world that I could ever justify blowing $20k, even if I had $20k to blow. As cool as this thing is, it just isn't in that league.

I'd blow $20k (if I had it) on, way, a real Afterburner 2 R360 arcade machine or something....THEN it'd be worth it.
