View Full Version : Nintendo Revolution to be backward compatible with Gamecube?

What we heard: A GAF poster republished information he claimed originated from the "first person to give decent DS specs." Though the original source admits his information has only "a 65 percent chance of being accurate," he makes some claims that, if true, would be pretty innovative. One, he confirms a rumor that was widely circulated last year--that the Revolution's controllers will incorporate gyration technology. It will have dual processors, four controller ports, built-in broadband, and an Xbox-esque hard drive that can store downloaded and saved content. (Can you say, "Son of 64DD?") While the Revolution will be backward-compatible with GameCube games, it will not have Game Boy Advance or DS connectivity. Instead, it will link up to the vaunted Game Boy Evolution, the near-mythical successor to the GBA. Games in development include--shocker--a Mario game, a Zelda game, and a Super Smash Brothers game. But when the poster's source asked his inside source at Nintendo what "revolutionary" functionality the console would have, the mole balked. He would only say, "If you think too hard you'll never guess what it is. It's nothing 'new,' technically speaking. It's just something that hasn't really been applied to video games yet." Sounds pretty good--for a thirdhand account on a forum of word-of-mouth information that has, by the author's own admission, a 35-percent chance of being wrong.
Bogus or not bogus?: We'll see at E3.

Actually I believe most of that rumor. Except for the part about the dual processors. I mean is that really needed? Maybe Nintendo is going to get serious this next gen, but I highly doubt it.

I don't know about that rumor, but I myself think almost 100% that it will be BC with gamecube games.

[sarcasm on] The Revolution is going to be so groundbreaking and completely unlike any product ever made before, there is no way it will be backward compatible with the lowly Gamecube [off]

I sure hope so, if for no other reason than to make them include a D-pad on the controller. (It's rumored the Revolution controller won't have one.)

In all seriousness, Nintendo may choose to not make the Revolution backwards-compatible with the Gamecube. They said that they wanted to keep the GC alive long into the Revolution's life. They just may think that the best way to accomplish this is to forego the backwards compatibility so people still buy GCs.

Well i have my own inside source.
My hush hush mole confirmed that indeed Nintendo would include something brand new to the video game console world.

While I find this interesting and probably rather accurate, that 65% figure either means this person is very close to news of the project...or just added 15% to come out with an odd number higher than 50% LOL
It will have dual processors, four controller ports, built-in broadband, and an Xbox-esque hard drive that can store downloaded and saved content. (Can you say, "Son of 64DD?")[/quote]
Nope...I can say "Son of XBox success > GC success," though!
The dual processors thing is pretty much a given, seeing how they're apparently set to use IBM chips, which the XBox 2 will have four of. Four controller ports and built-in BB - if they did NOT deliver these they would pretty much be failing to build on the GC, backsliding even. GC was arguably a bit early for built-in BB and the PSO glitch possibly killed it (laughable as this may seem).

A mouse? He did say "really." Hmm...maybe I'm reading 'technically speaking' a bit too hard and perhaps incorrectly but it sounds like this means it will be something to make one slap their forehead and exclaim "doh!" Something that is technologically already possible. The hard drive and BB allow for user ranks, that's apparent.

No that won't work. Otherwise if it did, no company would ever bother to make backwards compatability.

It's possible that the second processor could be for the backwards compatibility. Include the GCN main CPU in the "Revolution", similar to the PSX chipset in the PS2.
...ah, rumors and speculation. Set the world ablaze with just a whim. LOL

Geez, is there some rule that the smaller a console is, the more likely its sucessor will be backwards compatible?

BC proabably would mean another proprietary media. Sounds like the PS3 is going to use Blu-Ray and XBOX2 might use that or the other "standard" (OK probably not because I have a feeling it will be launched this Christmas). Nintendo needs to standardize and go with the flow. And allow DVD movies and CD's to be played on the Revolution.
GarrettCRW

Why? BluRay is practically proprietary in Sony's case (and using it in the PS3 is part of Sony's attempt to win the format war with HD-DVD), with one big exception: Sony's BluRay will not be as piracy-proof as the Gamecube's discs are.

Im under the impression that the big N might actually make the Revolution backwards compatible but what I dont understand is that I remember reading a few statements from Nintendo themselves stating that the Revolution was NOT a replacement or successor to the Gamecube but obviously it is.
No matter how much I luv Nintendo and many of their games I wonder what the hell their smoking sometimes x_x

How the hell is a *NEW* system thats is coming out after the old one and *NEW* games in the series continuing on this *NEW* system not a replacement?
Does Nintendo even buy the crap they say anymore?
That is sort of like saying to a kid in 1992 that the SNES isnt a replacement for the NES.

I'm trying to figure out what you are smoking not linking us to an interview where someone from Nintendo makes this claim.
Also, maybenot this Console Gen, but by the next one, we'll be using cartridges again. Not like you know and love cartridges, but something similar. Microsoft recently filed the patent, and it makes sens. With the costs of Flash or other storage media dropping for mass purchasers, and Online gameplay slowly growing, it would only make sense.
Mirosoft and Sony have both announced that Hard Drives are not a part of their next Gen gameplan. They were too expensive to package in, and the majority of consumers weren't "hip" to the idea. But if the games were on cartridges, then as you were connected to the internet for online play, your cartridge could be getting updated with new Maps, Patches, levels, enemies, etc. Now you can take your cart to your friends house and have the whole game, along with gamesaves contained on this removable media. No lugging around a Hard Drive, no more having to alphebetize all your memory cards.
Plus, cartridges open the door for homebrews and hacks. Okay, so that's not a good thing for the company. I just think that DVD, HD-DVD, BluRay...and discs in general, are about to end, and we will be returning to a metal touching metal sort of media again.
You watch, 6 years from now, and you'll see.

Wow, I have noticed like your past 100 posts on Nintendo subjects have all been negative! It does get a little old. I mean it's not like I am mad or anything, and you are only stating your opinion, but come on.
I don't like Sony, but you don't see me over in the Playstation thread and posts ALWAYS talking shit about EVERYTHING SONY does. And that's what you do with Nintendo.
I mean it just gets a little old everytime we talk or speculate something about nintendo, or what they might do with something, and you come in always saying no no no, sucks sucks sucks.

No way does Nintendo want to go with Blu-ray. Isn't sony the "actual" people that came up with blu-ray? That would be supporting Sony then. So they won't do that. Nintendo might go with HD-DVD though, but who knows?

Sony = Blu-ray. Nintendo definitely doesn't want that.
I've heard a rumor that the controllers will detect tilt. Wonder if that's most of it. :o

I doubt that would be true, due to the fact that a lot of (younger) people tend to twist and jerk the controller around when they play LOL or maybe this is what Nintendo is hoping for??? hmmmm...
I kinda like that blowup doll idea myself...

Well, if you don't care for my opinion or views on why i think Nintendo has lost it you can just ignore my posts. Besides, you are the only one who seems to care what i say anyway.
Nintendo has pulled some crap in the recent years that makes me roll my eyes and wonder what bunch of monkeys they have in charge there. I'm not going to pat them on the ass for releasing 4,500 different colored systems, and i am certainly not going to say something nice about any company that has pretty much cranked out some "new" system every christmas for the past few years.
How do i restore faith in a company who used to do good with what they did when all it seems they do nowadays is crank out stuff for $$? I do understand that all these companies are in it to make money but really..you had the GBA, a year later the SP came out, then the DS shows up. Ya know if Sony or MS pulled that kind of crap there people would bitch endlessly about it.
I may not be as big a Nintendo fanas i once was, but i certainly don't enjoy watching a once great company go down the crapper.
