Does it still play store-bought discs?

If it plays stolen ps2 games it should play stolen movies.

your losing the ability to do something illegal (unless they are home movies copied to dvds)....if they are just copied illegal movies, then just watch them on a normal dvd player (not that expensive anyway) and save the ps2 drive from wear and tear.....or use your old ps2 for movies

Chances are that the drive is just cheaper and crappier in the PsTwo. They had to cut corners somewhere, right?

I am offended by the illegal content of this thread.

You guys are quick to jump the gun. I have tried to play DVD-R's in my PS2 (They were movies that me and a few friends made) and I would have asked the question here, in fact, but I found an answer elsewhere. If you have something to add to the conversation, or a responce to his question, great. If all you have is a smart ass comment accusing him of trying to 'watch illegal movies' then just keep that to yourself, you aren't helping anyone out.

Well, then, you're the exception to the rule, as most people trying to watch movies on DVD-Rs would certainly do so with movies they've rented and copied. In an ideal world, DVD burners would serve only to stock personal movies and data, not illegal copies of commercial releases, but that's definitely not the reality.

you are using dvd+rw? as in rewritables? try just normal dvd+r or dvd-r.

hint: there's an off topic forum

Settle down. The gang is trying to bounce what seems to be a pirate thread. If the guy isn't a pirate you'd think he'd at least have the sense to say what you just did "to play my home videos". We're no so naive as to think that someone playing "burned copies" isn't up to something illegal, as 99% of threads worded this way turn out to be.

What's wrong with Pirate movies? I loved that one with Johnny Depp :)

I'd blame the smaller space for conducting heat, the overall higher tolerances required, and the usual "update" a company like this makes when they want to fix something that allows piracy and we're all set. Well, the laser apparently burns out much faster (and sometimes quite quickly), but again - higher tolerances. Personally I think game consoles should be built to lower tolerances, but hey, it's not my stock value that goes down when a company doesn't release at least two varieties of the same hardware. Seriously though, they build this stuff cheaply like a PC, and so you get what you pay for (the assurance that it will die sooner or later, emphasis on sooner). Their fault, and ours as well for demanding the lower prices. :/

As for the thread...well, I'm not against having some information on RW burning, and whether or not a pirate is asking seems immaterial to me. You should be able to play your legal stuff, simple. Hooray for more fun - take low cost parts, demand high tolerances, ownership of a good percentage of the world's blockbuster films, and stir in long-term agendas for control of media formats that just happen to inconvenience the customer - sounds like a winner to me!

Ah the irony of those who probably have MAME and a gig or two of roms blasting their brethren!

I'M TOTALLY AGAINST PIRACY!!!!.....unless it suits my purposes, wherein I have no probem acting self-righteous about it.

To extend on what Ed stated, 'fair use' makes this a legitimate question regardless of intentions.

Crappier? Can't get much crappier than the drives in the big PS2s (sans maybe the version 1s, but even still...)

There's a big difference between copying "still on retail shelves" vs. copying "no longer in arcades" files. I understand this may seem hippocritical to you but it's always been my philosophy that preserving the classics is entirely different than distributing first-run products.
