i played it once at a new defunct store called ames, around 1990-1993? i'm not sure if it was "thugged out", or ghetto-specific, but i remember a kind of outlaw theme to it. i played as a character, thin black guy with one of those old newpaper seller caps you see in movies. i mean, the guy looked at home in something like fat albert or a 70s black animation. thought i located the title earlier, but it was a false lead. any suggestions are much appreciated.

64th Street. Check out the review section to your left to be sure. I've probably played ever arcade beat-em-up ever and that's the first to come to mind. I'll keep thinking if that isn't it though.

No, 64th Street didn't have any playable black characters.
Is it The Combatribes (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=C&game_id=7374), perhaps?

its not the combatribes, i own a copy of that for the snes. i also think this was one of those wretched arcade cabinets that made to insert more money after a certain time period has passed, even if you hadn't died or whatever.

Was it Brute Force (http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=B&game_id=7220), maybe? That's all I can think of.

Crime Fighters has that coin system, so did Vendetta, but the characters aren't as described. Violent Storm is a possibility, they are all one trilogy kinda.

Blurgh... really, the only thing I can think of here is a completely obscure beat-em-up entitled Mug Smashers.

Other than that, I got nothing. I will search on it, though.

Ugh. Mug Smashers. That one is comical. Uses most of Combatribes soundtrack which I always found odd.
If it's not on of the ones I mentioned, I'm almost out. The hat is really throwing me off. All of the black guys in BEU's (which oddly there aren't many of) don't wear hats, especially not the kind you're talking about. Are you sure you controlled him and he wasn't a boss? If that's the case, then it opens up an entirely new set of games.

i'm sure he was playable. my last guess is that maybe it wasn't a by-the-book beu, and leaned more toward something like golgo-13. i appreciate the help though, so far.

we're working with a 12-15 year old memory of a 10-minute or so encounter of a game. don't break my hump. i could always try and find the names of obscure movies i remember bits and pieces of from way back when.

Ahhhhhhhhhh... so, by beat-em-up, you probably mean a 2D platformer that involved lots of beating up of the enemies, not necessarily a Final Fight type game. Ahhhhhhhhh...
Hmmmmmmmmm...

Crap. That could be any game. I'll offer another BEU, though: Arabian Fight. http://emulazione.multiplayer.it/mamend/A/arabfgt.htm
I don't know why I'm throwing that one in there. I got nothing. I'll look into it some more, but I'm as stumped as GRG here. >_<

The only black character I can think of besides Abbo in a beat' em up is that one guy in Rival turf. Though thats not a arcade game.
