How rare is this system? I know it was only released in Japan, but after shifting through eBay I only found one and the starting bid was $70 which I think is outrageous. Does anyone know what I should expect to pay for one (loose is fine) and maybe some place besides eBay I might be able to find one?
And while I'm on the subject of GB's, how about the Ice Blue GBpocket? I found one on eBay for $7.50 + shipping, no bids and almost finished. Just a fluke or does no one care?

I had almost picked one up a few years ago for $50, but it was beat to hell. Probably would have only paid that price if it was mint.

i'm a very happy owner of a game boy light, so i can field this, i think.
first off, i forget who dug this jewel of a site up, but the game boy galleria (http://www.imgcab.com/gameboy/gameboy0.html) is a great gallery of game boy models and special releases.
rarity of the system depends very highly on the condition and version you're after. if you don't care about getting it boxed and sealed you can save some money, naturally. the silver is the most common as far as i know, the gold slightly less, and after that there are a ton of limited run special editions that will go for much more. the clear plastic famitsu model is the most expensive that i ever saw, believe it went for $200 boxed but that's definitely a vague guess since i can't use the search function to do some reseearch.
i picked up a silver (the color scheme i liked the most, happy coincidence) with no box or manual. a low-feedback but long time user was selling it, and in the end i picked it up for six bucks and five shipping. most of the auctions i remember ended aroudn twenty to thirty, and that's about as much as i'd pay. if someone wants more than that for a used gold or silver gbl with no box, i say screw 'em. i haven't been paying attention to what they go for on ebay in the past couple of months though, so i might end up eating those words... ^^;
by the way, the screen will probably take a little getting used to. it looks odd at first, but eventually you won't even notice.

I haven't seen much interest in any of the various Game Boy limited runs at this point (ie pocket Ice Blue, Color Pokemons (Yellow/Blue & Silver/Gold)) but since the system is not highly collected at this point it's understandable. I would probably go for the Ice Blue for $7.50 if you are looking for the harder to find hardware since A) you're not going to find it for much less and B) conditions of these is only going to get worse.
As for the GB Light, I really haven't been tracking them (though I have to start soon to beef up the hardware section of the guide). I got mine NIB a number of years ago for around $50 off eBay and tried to track them down wholesale when the GBC was released but prices were high and few pieces were out there.

Hmm I have 2, I picked up my Gold one off of ebay Mint In Box for 70$ and my Famitsu clear (also MIB, if you could call its packaging a box) for about 135$, the Famitsu clear was nearly a year ago an dthe Gold was about 8 months, lately the prices have skyrocketed but if you keep at it and check a lot you should be able to find one for a decent price. The last (and only other) Famitsu I've seen lately went for more like 275-325$ if memory serves me correctly, but I may be thinking of the Astroboy ones (someone got both for 90$ And sold them to other people seperately for 250$ each, I slept in on the day of the 90$ auction :embarrassed: ) I'm glad to see people are still using that site, its a great place to find pics of GBs

I'd love to own a GB Light someday. It just seems like it'd be cool to just have.
I'd also pick up that Ice Blue GBP. I have one myself, but it's pretty beat up from being carried around in my backpack for 4 years of college.

Forget the famitsu model for rarity, out of them all the rarest gameboy light is the toys r us exclusive clear yellow gameboy light.
I have only ever seen 2 for sale in all the years i have been looking and neither of them were boxed.
So far i own 2 gb lights, one of them a really battered unboxed gold gb light & the other is a limited edition one made for the grand opening of the pokemon centre in tokyo.

Most definently the TRU GBL. I've wanted that one for a long time but have yet to see it even once on ebay, and the chances of finding it here are probably 0%, let alone in any good condition. I've seen 2 Famitsu's one in the hang up display packaging (which I won) and one in the mail order packaging (which went for over 200$)
