Battletoads. It came on strong, then vanished without a trace. MUCH better than any turtles game, this franchise should be resurrected. And it should be just as achingly difficult as the NES version, not the watered-down challenge of the SNES incarnation.
Of course, those of us reading the DP print 'zine are well aware of your affinity for Battletoads. :D
Is that Jules Asner as your sexy avatar? Wild on... Nintendo!

Maybe it's just me, but I have a completely different definition of "fallen franchise" than probably over half this thread.
A lot of people are naming franchises that simply haven't released a game in a long time, like Kid Icarus or Killer Instinct or NiGHTS or Rez or Earthbound. To me, none of those apply. When I think of "fallen franchises," I think of things like Tomb Raider. That is, franchises that were once loved but then became terrible. Franchises that never released bad games never "fell," in my opinion. They were just ignored or forgotten.
Fallout I think is a great answer. I did not like the last couple outtings of the franchise, and a lot of other people didn't either. But I have hope. One day, the franchise is going to return to its awesome roots.
Sonic is another good one. Sonic Adventure 2 was a big letdown, and Sonic Heroes just further dragged it down. Sonic is such a simple and fun concept though, it has to make a comeback. It just has to.
The topic says "fallen or FORGOTTEN franchises you have hope for". Kid Icarus and Nights Into Dreams are prime examples of forgotten franchises, and tons of people wanna see sequels for them both. I also included Rez because it may as well have been forgotten. It came out for one system (in the US, anyway.) and sold miserably even though it was a brilliant game. Sega should have released it for all the systems. Same with Jet Set Radio Future. If they did, those games surley would've found a niche.

Shining Force (Hard to say its forgotten with a GBA title, but long overdue for a current gen version IMHO)
Lunar series. (Originals so good its hard not to wonder what else they could do with this franchise.)

Wonder Boy aka Monster World series.
This is a PERFECT type of game for the GBA/DS portables. Sega hasn't completely forgotten about the franchise because recently Monster World III and IV were released for PC on emulator discs and Asha from Monster World IV was in a 2004 capsule toy series. Monster World I is available from Sega on cell phone in Japan as well.
Ah, cool. I'm glad to see there is still hope then. :) And I agree, a DS/GBA version would be awesome.

heres yet another vote for fallout,
and lets see a sequal/update to every LucasArts adventure game while we're at it.
oh, and who can forget Command and Conquer. the best RTS of its time, the last 3 games were such abismal pieces of shit its unbeliavable (im referring to RA2, C&C2, and C&C:G).
ill throw a vote for Landstalker, not really a franchise that im aware of, more like a one hit wonder, but damn that game was great, puzzle solving rpg at its finest.
id also like to see the word 'strategy' be put back into every Real-Time-Strategy game released... in lets say... the last 8 years.

Sonic... :( The Hedgehog... :( So-ho-nic the Hedge-ah-hog :(
Tomb Raider... OHHH LOL Sorry, I shit my pants LOL And I'm Eating it!!! LOL Yahoo!... but seriously, Tomb Raider LOL
...Lara Croft ROFL
I don't know if you'd call it a fallen franchise or just a hiatus, but Street Fighter Alpha 4 would be a much welcomed game.
Mega Man IX too. ... Inafune and SNKP's Metal Slug team working on Mega Man IX *Drooling*
I have no idea what any of this says.
Translation-
Sonic the Hedgehog. Boy I miss the old games... can't believe what the series has turned into, makes me want to cry.
Tomb Raider... heh, just joking. That series should stay gone, I don't understand why Eidos continues to try and make it popular again (as if it ever lost that popularity... just it's respect) I mean, is Lara Croft even an interesting character to most gamers? I know she isn't here...
Street Fighter. I don't know if Capcom wants to call it quits, or the series is just taking a break, but wow... they really need to make annother one. I'd kill (...wouldn't I?) for Street Fighter Alpha 4!
Mega Man. X? meh, I prefer uneven difficulty and robot dogs. Mega Man IX would be great. The X series HAD one thing going for it though, the awesome hand-drawn-ness of the levels (something the MMZ series continued). I dream of the day when Keiji Inafune and SNK-P's Metal Slug Team, team up to give us a new entry in Mega Man with some eye-popping 2D visual artistry.

Startropics, for sure. In fact, right now it's the only game I care about Nintendo rehashing.
And there was some article I read about Kid Icarus getting some sort of rerelease/new game. I'll have to go find it...

Turrican. Maybe put Turrican II on the GBA with the Amiga music - I would love that!
Have to agree with XCOM - maybe an online version you can play against a friend over the net - one playing the humans, one playing the aliens.

Ugh, I'm glad many of the franchises I've read here have died. Battletoads, Turrican? Please.
I'm waiting to see Fallout 3, and I know they're working on it :)

Battletoads was great for it's time, but I don't think it would be as fun now. As for Turrican, I never was much of a fan of that series. I'm surprised that they actually made more than one game of it.
Punch-Out!! comes to mind. I have to ask, what was the reasoning of Nintendo by not having this title come out on the N64 (and later systems)? The arcade, NES and SNES were extremely popular, and loved by everyone I've ever met that played it. What was the logic, someone please answer!

It never was a franchise but I am surprised Nintendo never did anything further with the Duck Hunt concept. Surely they could have made a bigger and better sequel or found a way to update and enhance the original game for a more powerful system.
My biggest problem is when franchises stop using the characters that were in the original games and drew us into a franchise in the first place. You may need to put Simon Belmont or Donkey Kong on the back of a milk carton, given their limited or non-existent roles in some of the games that are part of their franchises.
I'll admit it. I used to like Bubsy. The only good thing about the Battletoads was the dumb "music" playing when you paused the NES version.

I'm still waiting for sequels to Shenmue, Panzer Dragoon, and Skies of Arcadia. I remember when Sega announced a sequel to Skies of Arcadia a few years back, but I haven't heard anything since. It really deserves one though.
