I'm starting to settle into the new apartment I moved into last week. Finally managed to unpack sufficiently to be able to hook up the Genesis/Sega CD console I picked up recently (both units work, hooray!). Many of my games are still packed, but somehow I ended up with Gauntlet IV close at hand so I popped it in. I'd been meaning to try this one for a while, but hadn't had the time.

I'm happy to say it's as good as I hoped. I love the "Quest" mode. It reminds me of the NES version of Gauntlet, which built a long and satisfying adventure within the framework of the arcade game (even though not everybody liked it). I actually prefer it to NES Gauntlet II, which is a good arcade port but seems kind of aimless. Gauntlet IV is better than both of them in some way since you make incremental progress -- clean out a room of monsters and it stays clean. And I love the idea of using treasure as money for buying better weapons.

I'm not through playing IV yet, but it's already got me hankering for more Gauntlet goodness. I never tried Gauntlet Legends or anything beyond that. How do the later games stack up to the classic Gauntlets? Any other good Gauntlet-like games I should check out?

I love the later games. They can get a little pricy and / or hard to find, but if you like the classic Gauntlet style, they are definitely worth playing.

Finding some friends to play with will make the expreince even more fun! I've played through the DC version of Legends about six times with different groups of people, and it doesn't get old like that!

I'm a big fan of the Baldur's Gate games on the PS2. Those are Gauntlet-ish.

As is the Champions of Norrath game.

My wife is completely hooked on dungeon crawler/hack n slash type games. It's cute. ;)

Gauntlet IV (also released in Japan under a slightly different name, Gauntlet Arcade version or something of the sort) is my current pick for the series' highest point on homecart.

I just picked up the NES game at Goodwill for $.59 cents! Pretty good deal there (picked up a plain SMB, Baseball, and Kung Fu for the same price, seeing how I didn't have those exact versions in my collection yet).

I just picked up Gauntlet SMS from UK Ebay...which I must say is a pretty solid port

I never get tired of those games

Another Gauntlet clone on Xbox, is "D&D Heroes" I got a kick out of that one

My best friend's dad is simply insane about Gauntlet, he's 53 years old and you give him $5 and he'll get to level 112 easily...

I sat and watched him finish Dark Legacy at the local arcade...friggin amazing

and yeah for the record, I'm a huge Gauntlet fan

Ever try Dark Chambers on the Atari 7800? It's definitely not a newer game, and it actually kind of sucks, but it's interesting from a historical standpoint. I think in another thread we determined that DC was not related to Gauntlet at all, but damn if they're not very similar games.

I second the suggestion to try the legends games, they are pretty fun. it's slightly different, but not enough to make it not gauntlet.

Gauntlet Legends, one of the easiest-to-misspell games of all time!

Head to the nearest Blockbuster and pick up a copy of Dark Legacy for PS2. There's plenty of carnage to be had if you enjoy the basic Gauntlet mechanic. I find it's a good game to keep loaded on my PS2 hard drive at all times, because you never know when a game of Gauntlet might suddenly sound like a good idea, and god help you if you don't have the disc with you at the moment.
