(Mods, I thought this would be okay in here, but feel free to move it to Off-Topic if need be)

I don't know if anyone will care to read this, but I'm feeling nostalgic today so you must suffer. :P
I started working for Kay-Bee in September of 91, in the midst of NES mania and the waning years of the Atari generation. I still bought and played the occasional NES game (it was my sister's NES), but the Atari 2600 was a long-gone memory to me then. I was not collecting at this point (didn't start until 94), so be prepared for lots of collector-cringe moments.
Here's some random things I remember about my time there:

-When I first started, we had a glass case at the end of the register area with fringe games in it. This is where I first saw a Lynx ($149.99) and we had an opened returned game, and I thought that the cart was the weirdest thing I had ever seen. When the SNES came out that year, all the games went into that case because there were so few of them. I think the Game Gear games were in here at this point as well.

-The rest of the games (NES, Genesis, and Game Boy) were hanging on the wall behind the register. The managers had to count them every morning to make sure none were stolen (in the next year, the GG games were moved to the pegs on the left, and you could actually lean over the display and rip them off the pegs and run away, which happened many times. This was years before they had the checkpoint alarm thingy in the front). I got to count them once when the manager was hung over. :)

-I remember we had scads of NES Monster in my Pocket, Barbie, and Waldo games sitting there forever. We could not keep NES Monopoly, Tecmo Super Bowl, and Genny Joe Montana Sportstalk and Madden Football. I don't know about GB games since they were not on my radar at the time.

-We had an end cap with marked-down U-Force ($5.99) and the voice recognition thingy for NES. Lots and lots.

-I took home the countertop Nintendo Power magazine display, because we weren't using it anymore. That sucker was pretty heavy. Unfortunately, I gave it up to my mom, who stripped it of all NES goodness and made a planter out of it.

-We had at least 2 storage boxes full of Atari software. 800 (probably the highest box-to-cart ratio EVER), and probably XE because I remember seeing a lot of blue in there. There may have been 7800, I'm not sure. I think they were a penny each. Both boxes (along with any others) went into the dumpster.

-I remember seeing a few Atari Trakballs in the clearance section.

-We had a small tv/vcr combo given to us by Nintendo or Sega, to play their promotional videos in. We also played movies that we had for sale and the other company's promo vids. This usually was what was in there when the company rep came into the store, and they would get mad and make us put their video back in. He he.

-In 91, already, we had a shitload of NES licensed junk that was clearanced out in the back of the store, all stuff you see on eBay now.

-I never bought any NES games at my job, I always went across the hall to Captron because the games were cheaper, even with my discount. :P

-I was put in charge of the StarFox Super Duper Weekend, or whateverthefuck. I watched kids play StarFox all day long, and I had to wear a stupid apron. Having some hindsight, I actually still have this stupid apron, with two StarFox pins on it, and it's one of my prized possessions. The manager wouldn't let me keep the cart though, I asked. :(

-We had a big SMS closeout in 92. The system (SMS 2) was $19.99, and the carts were $4.99 to $14.99. We had a ton of carts, but they went really fast. I still was not collecting at this point, but I thought it was cool (I had never heard of it before this), so I picked up the system and a bunch of carts. That's why I have a Buster Douglas Boxing now. :rocker:

-My wife also worked for Kay-Bee at this time, and she became a manager later on. Her store had a bunch of reissue NES carts in 94-95. I remember Final Fantasy, Metroid, Punch Out!, Mega Man 4, and a bunch of other stuff. When they got rid of this display, they were supposed to take down the fiber-optic World of Nintendo display sign also. She asked me if I wanted it. Now, I was collecting at this time, but I was heavy into the Atari stuff, and the NES was NOT a classic system to me. You see where this is going, right?

/me repeatedly kicks himself in the ass

Anyways, that's pretty much what I can remember. I hope you enjoyed my little trip down memory lane, please feel free to post your own videogame retail memories!

a very nice story :)

quite refreshing to hear

I remember Kabee toystore oh so well. It was located in my local mall, and i remember as a little kid (must have been the same time), my mom would leave me in the store while she went around the mall to buy what not. I would spend hours in that place. I remember so well the majority of NES games when the SNES games came out all got moved to a HUGE clearnce bin near the front of the store. They were priced like the sega master system games you encountered 4.99-14.99, but i didn't get any as i was only in second grade or so. I do remember though that i could reach into the huge bin and not even touch the bottom. Take about diving into NES goodness.

Oh damn i miss those days... if only i had a time machine. Maybe I should get a hold of Uncle Rico and Kip and they could help me out.

I worked for Kay-Bee toys from 1986 till 1989 and again for a few months in 1991. My best Kay-Bee memory is meeting my wife. She worked the holiday season in 1988, we went on one date. When I was briefly back at Kay-Bee in 91 she stopped in the store. I hadn't seen her in 2 years, we talked a bit decided to catch a movie and the rest is history.

My Kay-Bee video game memories:

The NES was the big deal when I worked there. The most often requested games were Double Dragon and Double Dribble.

That's when I got my NES, which I still have. I got the Power Pad set. Still have all the original packaging too and the thing has been hooked to one TV or another for 18 years. The only time is was unhooked was when I moved or switched TV's.

I used to take advantage of being an employee and used Kay-Bee as a rental store. This was not policy but the manager let me do it. I's buy a game, play it and exchange it for another. I still ended up with 45 games in my collection but since I used to exchange them a lot it forced me to keep all the packaging. They all still have the shrink wrap and price tags on them too.

I didn't get much swag. I've got a small plastic World of Nintendo sign that clips over a shelf edge. I still have a Battletoads poster and an Adventures of Link hanging sign. Links sword is 3D. I used to have a Mike Tyson's Punchout standee but I tossed that when Tyson went to prison.

I remember blowing out Atari 2600 games and the 2600 jr's. We had the Trak Ball's too. I bought one, thought it sucked and retured it... damn.

I remember selling the Sega Master System. Didn't move well at all.

We got the Lynx about the time I left Kay-Bee for good I think. I rember seeing one in the store but that's about it.

I will never forget walking into a Kenosha Outlet Mall Kay*Bee close out store in the mid 90's. I found tons of sealed Ghostbusters stuff (which is one of my collections) and TONS of Atari 2600 stuff. There was a palatte of 2600 Trak Balls there. I did get one of the track balls, but I didn't even look at the other games there.

That was a great story! ;)

Kay Bee brings back great memories of when I was a kid. I remember going there (must have been around 1989), and buying Double Dribble. I also remember all the stupid mechanical animals in the front of the store squirming around the making tons of noise. The funny thing is, they STILL have stupid animals in front of KB today! They are obviously different styles, but the same thing none the less.

I also remeber all that video game goodness in my local KayBee back in the late 80's early 90's. The thing I kick myself about was they had tons of star wars power of the force figure for dirt cheap and I never bought any of them. @_@ Now that I collect the stuff I realize what I missed. Oh well.

I think you're thinking of the wrong one. There are two really close, and the Kay*Bee that I was at was in the strip mall that doesn't have one anymore, but has tons of factory outlet stores. The one you're thinking of is on the West side of the freeway, and still has a Kay*Bee... and it pretty much sucks.

I worked for Kay-Bee in 2002 while I was saving up for grad school. Snagged myself a broken kiosk Dreamcast with a loose copy of Toy Commander and light-up GameCube/N64 and PlayStation marquees. I also bought too many PS2 games there before I even owned a PS2.

I still wish that I could go back in time and buy games that I had seen for cheap at KayBee! I did get alot of 'em, but I left some real gems behind.

That was probably about 1987 or so. I remember this very well because a friend and I went to the mall, and he completely stocked up on those SW PotF figures (which had the coin things as well). They were $.25 each. I asked him why he was buying so many, and he asked why I wasn't buying any. His answer? "They're a quarter each!" I didn't answer HIS question, and instead thought to myself "What a dumbass" and went to look the the Nintendo games.

I'm pretty sure he got 30-50 of them, because they actually gave him a big cardboard box to carry them out with. I just rolled my eyes.

*sigh*
