There were some great ads back in the day for the NES...though there were some cheesy ones too. My favorite is definitely one of the funniest ads I have ever seen...one of the original Legend of Zelda TV spots. Check it out here:

Try right clicking my link and doing a "save as". As for the other one, not sure why it doesn't work as it works for me (using Mozilla).

Definitely the Legend of Zelda asylum ad (Zelda? Zelda? Zeldaaaa!)

Also memorable: the SMB 3 TV ad (Mario! Mario! Mario!)

They probably used a mock-up (or a dev) NES.

TV Wise:

The original Legend of Zelda commercial-it gave juuussst enough screen shots to get your interest. At the time I saw the commercial I did not have a NES and it definitely got me curious.

The "Playing with Power" corridor commercial- I think three people dressed in "futuristic" clothing are walking down a corridor when suddenly monitors burst out from the walls along with controllers. The people start playing away at the various games, giving the audience a glance at what games were coming out for this "Nintendo" thing. Basically a commercial I showed my parents after I had seen a NES in action to try and get them interested in buying it.

Mike Tyson's Punch Out- watching Iron Mike sit down in front of that huge multimonitor display and then seeing these huge cartoonish characters appear was a thrill. Didn't he laugh at the end of it and wasn't it deep? Must've been a dub.

Print Ads:

Nintendo Power-can't deny that Nintendo Power was one big advertisement. Even though in the early years no developer could do no wrong (or at least average) in the ratings, these mags were still the best place to find info on the NES with tips, tricks and walkthroughs. Plus the posters were really cool.

Tengen cartridge ads-the ads that had shown a NES deck along with a few Tengen carts. Very classy and makes for a great desktop wallpaper.

The Immortal "many faces of death" ad-Now I can't recall if this ad came out FOR the NES along with the Genesis version but I'll mention it anyway: it was a two page ad (maybe three?) that had pictures of various skulls with different types of damage to them. Each skull had a blurb under them that said things like "Slimed", "Smashed", "Hacked", "Burned", etc. Hilarious.

I remember seeing MOST of those print ads when I was younger. They were just as cool as the games themselves.

Favourite print add- the TMNT one where you could see an open manhole in the floor and the turtles were just coming out of it. I was a huge TMNT fan back then and I wanted that game so bad.

Favourite TV add- the SMB3 "There's power in numbers" add where everyone is chanting "MARIO! MARIO! MARIO!" then it zooms out and Mario's face is covering North America. I think this add really captures the state of videogaming in that era. Nintendo absolutely owned.

I think this might be the site I was looking for. About 2-3 issues ago in EGM, in the part where it lists online sites to look at, there was one of there for NES commercials. Anyone know what site EGM was saying to go to.
(I accidently threw my EGM that had that info in it)

I can't really remember Nintendo commercials in my country, maybe except for Super Mario Bros. 3. I also vaguely remember a Super Mario Land 2 commercial.

There was some commercial from the government though about parents and raising children, where some kid was going to a shop to buy him a new set of parents. I remember he picked the parents where he got a little brother for free. I would have chosen those parents too, because that brother was holding a Nintendo Action Set.

My favorite TV ads were the Zelda one with the guy dressed in black yelling "Zelda! Zelda!" and occasional screenshots.

I also reeally liked the TV ad for Dragon Warrior which I only saw like twice, but it really made the game seem so cool. Actually, I was pumped enough for Dragon Warrior because of the previews in Nintendo Power and my parents got it for me shortly after it was releseased. I was so excited to get it. One day, my mom came into my room and said "I just saw a commercial for Dragon Warrior. Now I understand why you wanted it so much."

As for print ads. I remember really liking the ad at the beginning of most Nintendo Powers in the NES days with the guy surfing in the ocean and NES games stacked on the board and in his hands. I remember looking at each of the titles and hoping one day to have them all (heh, my first impusles at collection must have started right there)

When I first saw this in a comic book, it was before I had experienced anything beyond SMB, so it really intrigued me.
