I was a child of the late 70s/early 80s who cut his teeth on the Atari 2600. Friends of mine had the Colecovision, and Intelivisions were scattered throughout town. With the popularity of home computers growing, I watched the dedicated game console die. Colecovisions gave way to Commodore 64s. Intelivisions were replaced with Apple IIs. And Ataris were replaced with - well - Ataris.

I was in college when the NES was released in the U.S. Many of my friends were drooling over this new system. However, when I was asked if I was gonna get one, I remember exactly what I used to say:

Are you kidding? Who in their right mind is gonna want to buy a cart-based game system when the genre is dead? Hell, everyone I know has a computer. Any game I want to play, I can play on it! Plus, I can do my word processing for classes, and balance my checkbook. No game system can do that. I have a 1200 baud modem, so I can download stuff from the local BBS. Can't do THAT with a game system! Plus, have you seen the size of the carts this thing uses? Why have a big ol' clunky plastic cart when you can have a nice thin light floppy disc? I can store 10 floppies in the space of one of those carts. And a floppy can hold dozens of games. And you can pirate any software you want and you can't with a cart. I promise you - PROMISE YOU - this thing will be dead and on close-out within a year.

I have eaten those words a thousand times over. :embarrassed:

I hope you aren't a stock broker, but I probably would have thought the same thing

LOL LOL LOL ,cool, glad you finally did the right thing though!Actually, I have never owned an NES simply because I refuse to admit my error. Ask Joe. I ranted about this for an hour at one of the NJ Classics.

THE NES *WILL* FAIL ONE DAY! MARK MY WORDS! IT'S DOOMED! LOL

Hell who am I to pass judgement. I remember telling people that the SMS would trounce the NES in the long run. I mean look at the difference in graphics.... seriously..... anyone....

I loved the NES growing up but there were times when I still longed for the family 2600 to boot up properly (it was tempermental and after we got the NES, it was put in the closet).
