Today, in Halo 2, I decided to sit down and try and get this weapon of mass destruction myself. Basically if you're unaware, it's a hidden weapon stuffed away at the very top of Metropolis. It's sweet because it fires the green blasts of energy the Scarab walker does. The only ways up to it are either using the sword flying trick with the hidden blade from Outskirts, or to lure a banshee through the tunnel, and then boarding it at just the right moment to get it before it vanishes. That was the way I did it, so I could get back down and blow stuff up.
It's not actually that hard. The only tricks are keeping an eye on the banshee so it doesn't vanish (as it does if you aren't careful in the tunnel), knowing how to make the banshee move in the tunnel the way you want it to (as the AI craps out in there, and tends to fly into walls), and getting the tank over the first barrier, since it's harder without that thing.
Once you get it into the sewer exit tunnel, you simply lure it to the passage it can't fit in due to it's wings, then you blow those off and hurry up and board it when it crosses the loading zone. Do it right, and the elite will vanish from right under you, and you'll just hop right in to go fly up and away. From there you just go to the bridge at the top of the level, where the plasma rifle-esque scarab gun hovers above a small "danger" sign. Fly down, have a blast. It nukes everything. While you're flying around, may as well get the giant soccer ball out of the one damaged building and shoot it around. Or go exploring-Metropolis is pretty huge. All the while, nuking stuff. That scarab gun blows through Wraiths like nothing.
Anybody else ever make an attempt for that thing? It's totally worth the half hour I sacrificed.
