View Full Version : One game causing someone to reconsider a collection....

At one time I considered undertaking the insane goal of completing a PC Engine (including all cd formats+supergrafx, etc.) collection.

Thought later about a shooter subcollection, but I don't think I ever could get myself to shell out the cash for Darius Alpha. It kind of irritated me that the thing even exists, considering that it is just the boss battles from another game....

I was just wondering if anyone else has given up on anything like that for their favorite system because one game nagged at their mind.

I am more of a player than a collector, but sometimes late at night I just can't stop thinking about what an incredible showpiece that collection would be.

Has anyone ever heard of such a collection for PC Engine? Talk about huge/expensive/never knowing if you will ever find a couple of the pieces!

I thought about getting a complete black-box Nintendo NES collection; I already had stack-up which had been the hardest one for me to find! But then I thought about Donkey Kong Jr. Math, and realized that it would be a big pain in the butt to get a game I wouldn't even play, so I said screw it.

Now, I only really collect games that I would want to play or that I find interesting for one reason or another. I'm low on cash, so it seems senseless for me to buy something "just to have it" at the moment.

I've had this experience. For instance, I wouldn't consider a collection complete unless I had every cart. That includes stupid things like DKC Competition carts, or in the case of the NES, the miserable World Champ carts.

One system I wouldn't mind completing is the N64. So solid, probably last of the mainstream cartridge consoles (NeoGeo isn't mainstream, it's "hardcore"), and it's so easy to find nearly every game at this point. And the games are so varied.

I imagine that around here, most people shy away from attempting to get a complete PC Engine collection, just because they know they'll never be able to pry a Magical Chase away from Andre Henretta without paying a fortune for it! That guy seems to be ruining the whole PC Engine scene for everyone!

I decided that I wouldn't bother collecting all the Xbox titles just because I didn't want The Guy Game mucking up my house with its tastelessness. But I just paid for a copy since it seems so sought after and the seller was very kind to give me a great price, so now I figure I might as well.

I'm only about 17 games away form a complete NES collection, but there is no way on earth i'm spending $200 - 400 on those stupid panesian games, and even if you don't count thouse as part of the US collection (which to be honest, I refuse to), there's still the $200+ for Stadium Events and Flintstones 2.

Funk that.

Doesn't really bother me. If I have a complete atari collection EXCEPT river patrol, magicard, and 5-6 others, I would still consider it basically complete. Even if I GOT one of those games, I couldn't justify keeping it. Any game worth more than $100 on ebay doesn't stay in my collection. Simple as that. I have PDS, Glib, boxed complete stadium mud buggies, and 5-10 others worth around $100-$150 and even those get on my nerves sometimes :)

Majority of the game sin my collections I do play anyway, the rest go on the shelf until I do play them or just on display (pretty much counts for about half my tengen collection anyway).

My collecting appeal for the DreamCast has dwindled greatly. I've run into many occasions where I will find a game that is a must have for me only to find out that it's not only overpriced, but also scratched to hell. I really dislike disc format. I hope the rumor of the Revolution using 2 sided disks being protected by a case format (like a floppy disk or zip disk) is true.

Actually, Magical Chase for the PC-Engine is easier to find and cheaper than for the TG16. The PC-Engine version comes in a jewel case, as opposed to the plastic tray and cardboard box with the TG16 version which normally is not included in most of the auctions. Plus the PC-Engine goes for about 1/2 the price of the TG16 version. Here's a complete one right here for $138.00 BIN

Andre typically only goes for the the TG16 version.

Now Darius Alpha, the game he refers to, goes for around $700 to $1,000. I would think that would discourage a lot of people. What discourages me is that I don't wan't a lot of games I'll never be able to play because I don't know japanese, plus I don't want all those stupid dating sims.

I pretty much kept my PC-Engine to shooters and other games (such as Lode Runner, Volified, Hatris, Stratego, Shockman 1-3, Samurai Ghost 1-2) that weren't available on the TG16, and staying away from duplicates such as Magical Chase, Gunhed/Blazing Lazers, Soldier Blade etc. I am focusing on a complete TG16 collection instead. However, with some of the prices lately on Magical Chase and Might & Magic III, I may have to rethink my strategy.

I'll never have a complete Sega CD collection because I can't bring myself to buythe Kriss Kross game.

If I were to ever try for a complete us collection I would go for virtual boy. its a very fun system, not alot of games at all, and only a few "rare" games (jack bros , water world) that i would ever halfto pay over $30 for.

The next system would be game.com since I would only halfto pay about $50 for a complete collection LOL

Others would be n64, and ps2 (beings that as a games life prolongs the games become dirt cheap)

I am here right now with about three collections. I am only 4 games away from a Sega CD set(missing Keio, Radical Rex, BC Racers, and Jaguar XJ220). It is going to suck to complete. I also have exactly four for my nes set, minus Stadium Events, Flintstones 2, Menace Beach, and Secret Scout. I WILL complete my N64 set, as I am now only 35 games away from a US set, but dam if I am EVER to get an ISS Soccer 2000 US Box. Funk that for me, as I have NEVER seen one.

You'll run into this problem pretty much no matter what system you are trying to collect for, so I woudn't let it keep you up at night. Although a complete PCE collection would be am impressive accomplishment.

I am halfway through my sealed DreamCast set, and hav thought on many occasions that I may have to give up... But just as I think about it, something nice and tasty appears on eBay! Yay!

I think my obsession for sealed games pretty much makes sure I don't go too wild and go off on some obsessive compulsive shopping spree trying to get a complete set of, say, NES games. As I have my own guideline to guide me, I can make sure that I have a goal worth achieving, and know that I won't be blowing too much all in on go...

But even with my sealed Dreamy collection, I don't think there is any single game which would make me rethink the task of getting them all... And as I know at least two people with sealed Samba De Amigo box sets, I know that it's all easy here-on in...

I sometimes think about how much it will actually cost for me to get the last 6 unlicensed NES games, and I start thinking that I don't want to get them. But then I realize how sweet it would be to say you have every single NES game released, and that keeps me going and wanting to get them all.

I never understood the compulsion to have a "complete" collection... Buy the games you want, and forget about the games you don't want. Your collection won't be a failure just because you didn't waste $800 on that one game.
