I recently completed a deal with a person on this site (he's been here a while and has made many trades with people). He said he didn't have Paypal, so requested a money order. I sent him a Bank money order, now these are supposed to have 6 counterfeit protection measures on them. This guy took it to the bank and he claims that the bank said they were getting "fakes" lately and would only deposit the money into his account and not give him the cash up front. So he P.M.'s me stating he's not going to send me the games for another week or so. I told him that I had the carbon for the money order with serial numbers and everything. I also told him that I'm very reputable and have made many successful deals on this site as well as cgcc. This whole deal for some reason sours me, I real wanted these games to take to a game show coming soon, where I was going to let people play them. I almost want to just say listen, send my money back and keep your games, I've never ripped anybody off and it's not like I've posted once and never had any other feedback (I'm listed in the good traders list on this site).
Oh well, I'm pissed, but perhaps, I'll just not deal with this guy anymore and will encourage my fellow Canucks to be wary of the same. If I've paid for something and the person has the money, my merchandise shouldn't be held up.
Thanks for listening
Mark

First of all, this belongs in either the Feedback forum, or the Buying and Selling Forum.

Second of all, this doesn't do anybody any good without the specifics of the deal, who the purchase was from, etc.

I've recieved money orders and had to wait for them to clear for some reason. With personal checks as well, I make any buyer wait about 7 days so I don't have that chance of it not clearing the bank. I'm also in the "no paypal" boat because I reeeeeaaally got burned by them. I can understand where your seller is coming from. Unless you've paid using cash for some reason, always expect that there might be a minor delay. Especially if you're in Canada and buying from the US, customs alone might take longer than a week. Next time you're sending a money order, western union or a postal money order always is the best way to send. They never have to clear.

Anyway, I wouldn't let something like that scare you away from DP, or any member here. There's something about this little community that weeds out the bad traders. I've never had an issue from anybody on the board.

I think too that it's better to go with the Canada Post money order. I don't recall anyone, in the US or Canada, having to delay sending me something because of them. I never sent bank money orders to the US (or even elsewhere in Canada), but I have received checks drawn from American banks and they took forever (like a month) to clear.

Conclusion: doing business between Canadian and American banks is a very tedious affair that requires patience due to the long delay, especially when you consider the alternatives.

I don't really see where this a problem here? It's not like he said that he wasn't going to send the games, or just took the money and ran. The whole transaction is just going to be delayed because the MO has to be cleared, big deal, sounds like you'll get your games, just not in the time expected.

Just calm down and be patient.

The seller has a right to make sure the MO clears. What if he ships the games and then is told that the MO is a fake. Then he loses.

I would just be patient. If you don't get the games, then get pissed.

Hmmm

There are some major issues going on now with counterfit money orders that may clear a bank in 5 days but then get returned 2 weeks later as fakes.

Some people might be overly cautious about this. I would be if selling on eBay but not on here :)

Around here I'm more likely to send even if I haven't gotten paid yet..

When it comes to MO's that is why i only accept Postal MO's. You don't have to go through all the trouble and plus they are free to cash.

Sadly, Canada Post money orders are quite the rip-off these days.

But there is no wait to see if it's a fake or not, just take it in to the post office when you go to ship the item. Cash it up front so you have cash to pay for shipping. If it doesn't cash for some reason you no maila the package.

Thanks for your replies, I'll just hold tight and wait (patience is a virtue, correct). The only reason I send Royal Bank money orders is that they are "International" money orders and they have like 6 anti-counterfeit measures built in to avoid that problem. Anyway, thanks again for your ideas.

Yeah, I mostly only pay with International Postal Money Orders. They're actually cheaper than MOs from TD Canada Trust these days! I've never had a problem with people cashing them. However, I've heard of AND encounted the problem your seller is having. There's no problem...just be patient, as you know your MO is legit :)

Same thing for me. For US/Canada deals, I only use International MO from Canada Post and never had any problem at all.

Now for Paypal, i only accept balance payment only.

Believe me, I know about sending checks over the border. I sent a friend a personal bank check once, and even though he went to his bank and got the money right away, it took about four more weeks for it to show up as cleared on my end.

I suggest using USPS Money Orders if sending overseas. No hassle or fuss and they are major enough that there is no problem clearing them.

Okay, I am the seller that is being refered to.

Here are my thoughts on the issue.

First of all, the seller never told me to check out his feedback on this site or the other site that he had mentioned. If he had mentioned it to me, I did not receive the message.

In regards to the money order issue. I live in a town with a population of around 1000 people. Believe me, there are not too many people here at all. Therefore, I doubt that many people are receiving Canadian money orders of any sort, unless they are selling on the Internet. I was at the drive through cashing the postal money order. The lady left the window and was gone for around five minutes. When she came back, she told me that the money should be deposited directly into my account, because they had received several of these which were fakes, as of late. Considering the fact that I was at the bank just the day before, cashing a different money order, I didn't want to take any chances.

The seller never also never told me that he had wanted to receive the games in time for a game show. All I knew was that the bank had told me they received several fakes recently, and I also know that I did not want to take any chances. I really don't like that this issue was made public, I wasn't even PM'd beforehand. I really hope that this event does not hurt my sales.

The games will go out Thursday.

Best,
Dave

I don't think you have anything to worry about. Everyone here knows you were just protecting yourself, as I'm sure almost everyone else would do if they were in the same situation themselves.

Well, I'm currently in a deal that is, quite frankly, pissing me off. This kid (he has to be a teenager) agreed to buy a game from me on 1/6.

He said he'd have payment out very soon (only 20 bucks) but he kept telling me "Oh sorry my mom keeps borrowing my money"... this goes on for 2 weeks. Finally, on 1/21 he emails me saying he sent the money.

It's now 1/29 and nada. He emails me back "it must be the PO!" I tell him I have his address still and everything's boxed up ready to go. He then tells me "oh I talked to someone about it and he says it should come no later than Tuesday."

O_o

I smelt trouble with this kid but hey, I really want to be rid of this game and since I'm selling, I'm not losing anything. I just have to be patient and put up with crap.

My bet is, it will arrive Wednesday coz he will send payment out on Monday, after knowing I still have his address and that I told him I have a good reputation.

BTW, cash will be his method.

I *HATE* buyers who procrastinate and give you, let's face it, what basically sounds like BS.

If it smells and looks like BS, it most likely is!

sounds like its all cleared up then :)

Dave's a great seller and is VERY understanible when it comes to receiving money orders. I once couldn't get a MO in the mail to his place soon enough and he wanted to ship the stuff off. I ended up getting my product from TRM before he got my Money Order... and we had never traded or sold to eachother before. Talk about him taking a chance on me. A good guy :)

I didn't mention your name TRM because I didn't want to make it known that it was you, so therefore the only issue made public was my frustration. I was very frustrated when I wrote the thread and since then got some good feedback (i.e. use Postal M.O.'s). I've since felt better about the deal and am just waiting for my stuff patiently. I know your a good guy (from what I've read/heard), but so am I and it kind of bothered me that my character (inadvertently) through the bank questioning my M.O. became suspect. I guess this thread needn't go on anymore. I was just expressing some frustration and didn't want to name anybody. Hope things work out for the best.
Cheers

Communication is the key. If you need something immediatly tell the seller, so they can decide if they can get it to you by when you need it.

Money orders always will wait to clear unless they are a postal one. Never had a problem using one, in fact its all I use. Paypal has burned me way to many times to ever use them again.
