I'm excited as I finaly ordered my DP Advance guide and can't wait to carry it around with me in game stores and show those kids I mean business.
So I was wondering, what types of remarks and comments do you get from casual gamers with one of these babies in your hand?
(also where do you bring them with you? EB/Gamestop/gamecrazy?)

I've never brought mine with me to a game store. I have brought them to expos, but never a normal mall store, so I've never gotten a comment since at expos they are pretty common.

First of all, good job on buying the guide -- it's definitely money well spent. Anyway, my friend was with me at CGE when I bought mine (we had a blast!) but until about a week ago he'd never actually looked at it. When he did all he could say was "damn, this thing is awesome!" then he proceeded to look up all his games. :)
Personally, I've never taken it to a game store, either, but that's because I probably know Genesis rarity like...well, something I really know, what with all the times I've scanned through that part of the book. ;) One I get my friggin' license (I'm a bit older than this makes me sound, really!) I'll probably take it with me thrifting all the time...at which point I can probably speak of comments I've recieved about it.

Whenever I take mine into a store, it ends up at the counter with the clerks saying things like
"What is THAT thing?"
"Wow, never seen one of those before"
"How much is such and such worth?"
I always tell them where they can pick up a copy. Once I get all the stuff on my palm, won't have to carry them around with me!

I've been to local stores and flea's with my guide. They often times ask me about the guide.. what it says about certain games, etc. They get really pissy when I tell them what the guide says and their price is wrong (when they want more for a game then its worth). Sometimes the flea vendors or store owners ask where they can get it and I actually am reluctant to say, as I don't want to ruin my chances of a good find. Fior example, I got a complete Zero the Kamikaze Squirrel the other day for $3.99, for the SNES, at EB. If they knew about the guide it may not have happened.. Does anyone else feel that way (not wanting to tell certain people about the guides?)

I leave mine at home or in the car . I never will bring them into the stores or flea markets . I just memorize and know whats rare and what are not .. because I DO NOT want the vendors or sellers to increase their prices up .. one day my friend found a castlevania chronicles for $15 for the psx and he told the cashier it was worth $40 . I told him he's an IDIOT for telling the cashier that .. screw that !

i do NOT take the guide into flea markets... that is just asking for trouble.
i can walk back out to my car if im not sure on something at a flea.
i even take it into my local 'indie' game store, and they could care less.
i have never had anyone ask or comment on it

Have you ever seen one of the guides in person? They are freaking HUGE! If you walked around a mall carrying this book around and checking all the games in it, people would seroiusly give you some really odd stares (like this= :hmm: ). I read the book alot when I first got it, but since I only collect for one system (NES), I know pretty much all of the games and their ratings.

exactly! dont do it. no need to tip your hand. geesh i just buy what i dont have thats going for cheap. when i come home and break out the guides it part of the ritual. i get a second thrill at discovering something i just got was not just cheap but also rare. if its not rare in the guide thats cool too, i didnt overpay.

If I have the Guides with me when I go to the mall and I see something that catches my eye that could be rare, I leave the store and check the guides. If it's reasonable I go back for it.

When I'm going out to a flea market or a smaller store...I try to make a list of specific games I want for each system, plus some of the rarer games with their guide values.
Sometimes a vendor will ask what I have there, I show them my list, and usually say "This is a list of specific games I'm looking for, and the price I am willing to pay for them." It has worked a few times to get a booth at a flea market to drop down to my price...and if their price is lower...I will say "Wow, that's an incredible deal...I have some friends who play games as well...I'll have to let them know about this place" To at least try and keep the prices from going up :)
And if they look at my list and then try to say "Oh, well...that is the wrong price it's supposed to be *higher*" My response is "Ooh sorry, they price I wanted to pay for it just went a lot lower...goodbye"

This is what I usually do to. I've never brought the guide with me on the hunt, but I think I'm going to change that. This weekend I found a pawnshop with $1 2600 games. I'm sifting through the games and find two weird looking carts: Bumper Bash and Master Builder. The first thought that enters my head is "bumper Bash must be pinball and if Thunderball on O2 is any indication, it's going to suck!" So I leave those two games and pick up some Activision and Atari carts. I get home and check the guide only to realize they are both rare/expensive and more easily found in Canada (where I am). I race back to the store only to find..... both carts are already gone :(
