Damn, i scared myself really bad today!

As most of you will know, i was trying to mod my Saturn, as i wouldnt shut up about it really regarding issues with it...
Eventually i got fed up of solder this n that and the disc not spinning and alsorts of problems, so i decided to try the swap trick.

I got the swap trick to work great, i used a pen lid hooked onto the mechanism to detect wether the drive doro is open to bypass that and left the consoel open as i tested it. Worked great, before i knew it, i was playing Sonic R, as i have fond memories of this from my cousins house years and years ago...

Anyways, i went to put the saturn back in one piece which was no problem at all, all screwed back up and powered up fine, but i found the cd wouldnt spin this time round... i must have damaged the drive mech using the pen clip...

I went to open it up again and my Dad came into the room to see what i was up to, i explained how the disc wasnt spinning and this mech here was the connection needed for it to spin. He didnt quiet understand so i turned on the saturn with no lid and showed him, how if i pressed the mech down with a pen the cd would spin even if the drive was open/lid wasnt on the top.

unfortunately for me, my hand slipped ever so slightly and caught part of the metal with current running through it on the saturn! i was electricuted, my body slightly spazzed out and it scared me like mad. Luckly i pulled my hand away quick enough before it could do anythink bad to me.

Wierd as it is, i wasnt affected in any way and carried on my day as normal.

I put the saturn back together and learnt my lesson!

So i guess i just wanna say to you lot, is if your modifiying systems, please be careful. If i had been taken away by the 240volts of that saturn, how would any of my friends on DigitPress know? i would just be Missin in action...
i could never talk to Grayfox about Sonic this n that...
talk to Ghouls N Ghosts about Resident evil and how he knows it all...
Nes-a-holic and all his wicked finds and Nes stuff...
chaoticjelly and his awesoem loot...
well any of you really that i have spoke with, or have yet to speak with!

I wish you all a safe trip in console modding and take extra good care and value your lives!

*slowly wipes brow of sweat*

Whew, heh, luckily that sucker didn't deliver a huge jolt of electricity to ya man. That would've sucked... hardcore....to the max.

Well, lucklily, you're fine and no major damage done to ya, and hopefully the Saturn will be fine as well. :D

If we would've lost our Caut, oh dear, the world would've surely exploded.

We'd go nuts without you man...how else am i going to help you get out of the Garden in Resident Evil Cube? or meet the famous "NEPTUNE"

Seriously, I've been shocked 12 times in my life, it's not really that fun, but wakes you up...(I was a student of a Technical college, circuit boards just love human hands...)

Glad to hear you're OK. It reminds us all.... dun mess with the Saturn. :P

lol, the same thing happened to me when i was modding my saturn, word of advice for ya... solder the red wire to the big metal thing that u got electroucuted on... its tons easier!

Glad to hear you're okay caut :) I've yet to mod any of my systems, but when I do I won't be suprised if I find myself wearing rubber gloves.

I didn't know a shock from a system could be fatal. Can it? Anyways, i'm glad your alright, I myself just shocked the hell out of myself the other by plugging back in my dryer.

Heh, I thought this was a thread about Gauntlet at first. "Use potions to defeat Death."

Well, glad to hear that you're okay, Caut! We've still got a few more trades to work out between us. :P LOL

Phew, glad you're allright. Gotta be careful when playing around with electronic components ;D.

Glad you're okay, man. :) When is the last time we've seen a finds thread here without one of your posts in it? After a few of those went by, I would surely wonder what's up. LOL

Well, you're finally one of us now! The few, the proud, the slightly off-kilter folks that mess around with electronics, and have learned the stimulating thrill of household current!

Seriously, many of us have been there, and fortunately we live to joke about it.

Glad you're OK, and you'll never take good ol' AC for granted again.

Shock 'n' awe, baby.

You think that's scary? Try servicing the monitor in an arcade cabinet. Actually, wait. Don't. Get a qualified professional to do it. Seriously.

i got started on electrocuting myself very early. I stuck a key in the wall plug, but i don't remember anything from that to after a while :D .

Anyhoo, glad you're ok, hopefully that will turn you even more into electronics, as it turns out with the majority of people who get a good electric jolt.

Yeah... I was doing that once (well, I've done that a lot more than once, but this time) and my arm brushed the "suction cup" on the back of the monitor...

Holy crap I've never felt my heart beat so fast and then so randomly. It was probably a good thirty minutes before I felt better.

And I was being careful!

Glad you're okay!

I've done it before. It sucks.

Glad you're alright.

Glad you're okay, man. When I was younger I owned 3 arcade machines. All three were generic woodgrain brown cases with three board.. I had Kangaroo, and two others I can't remember right now. I used to reach in the machines often not knowing that I gotta be careful. Lucky I never got anything.

Kid in school used to stick paperclips in the wall socket. He was crazy.

I once touched the inside of a Pinball machine and got electrocuted, it felt as if a giant had picked me up and was shaking me violently. I am not sure how many volts or amps (whatever) I took in put it was pretty violent. My fingers were burned on the tips. Luckily my dad was right there and knocked me back away from the machine. I could not even stand for about 5 minutes. Electricity is not something to screw with.

Glad to hear you're alright! I'm always paranoid about taking things apart for that reason.

Hmm

It's not the voltage it's the current that can mess you up. Even a car battery at 12 volts will burn you because of the amperage.

When I was in high school electronics class we used to get a kick out of blowing up capacitors. Only took about 10 volts but we would crank up the amps to about 20. One time I popped a larger one and when it blew it smacked into the clip that was the + side and it snapped off and right on to the back of my hand. My other hand was on the grounded metal test bench.

Felt like someone punched me in the chest and I fell flat on my back. Besides the scar on my hand it hurt more from falling than the shock.

Learned me a bit of respect that day :)

240 V is nuthin'. I've shocked myself several times while tinkering/repairing TVs and monitors. It's not the 20,000 V that hurts the most, it's the pain of your hand smacking the wall when you violently flinch it away from the TV. Not to mention the mental kicking you give yourself. If you thought you shorted out the high voltage capacitor to the picture tube, do it again. And then do it a third time.

I remember when I was eight or nine I got a hold of the generator to my brothers bike. I put the leads in my mouth and ran the wheel of the generator across the floor. I could actually see flashes of light in front of my eyes! It scared the crap out of me. And so, naturally, I did it again! :D

Back in high school I built a device that would intentionally shock people. Simple device, really: Just a coil hooked up to a switch and a 9 V battery. I told people it was a lie detector and shocked them when I thought they told a lie. One girl in class thought it was a cool gadget and got a bunch of us in a circle and hold hands to see how many people could be shocked at once. Eventually I hooked it up to an Oscilloscope and discovered that the voltage spike was on the order of 600 V.

Good times. Good times. :)
