Donno if anyone has ever brought this up before, but has anyone ever noticed the box art to the original Metal Gear kinda resembles Michael Biehn from the original Terminator movie??

Found this picture of the resemblence:

that's the cover from the Metal Gear Book. I remember I read it when I was in 6th Grade. And I ALWAYS thought that about the dude from Terminator. (He's also in the Michael Jackson 'BAD" music video.

I noticed that from day 1. Also, "Metal Gear" on the cover is a Robocop ED-209 with it's parts rearranged.

True!

WAVE - Man, that is neat about Ed 209. I never knew that until now. Thanks. It's always neat to learn new trivia and odds n ends about the NES era (my fave era in video game history).

I never noticed that either... I wonder what the story is behind that?

Just more proof that hardly any thought goes into US box art half of the time - or well, enough thought to warrant original art!!

Wow, I have never noticed that, but it is definately a scary resemblance. There was a site that had up weird resemblances on the box art of NES games, I remember that the cover of Contra looked JUST like a picture of Arnold, and the other guy on the cover looked just like a pic of Stallone.

After living with an illustrator for three years of my life who did work in this style, it's probably not as surprising as you think. Most illustrators do tend to pull from photographs as reference material. They don't just pull the images out of their head - a reference is needed for shadow values, proportion, and about a million other things that I probably couldn't even begin to understand.

That said, the illustrator in question didn't seem to do a very good job differentiating characteristics to make the Solid Snake illustration "his own". However I think that without question, the original reference material has been found, without a doubt.

Other than the legs nothing on the metal gear matches the ED209 using the pictures you show. Everything else is changed and not just in position.

I noticed this too. Not necessarily that shot of Reece, but how the box art resembled him.

I have heard of this reference before...I don't remember on what site. I'm relatively sure that it was found this was no accident...however, my mind could be playing tricks on me...

BTW, as a kid, I noticed this resemblance too.

Actually, for some reason the gun is airbrushed out in that pic. Solid Sharkey (http://www.solidsharkey.com/wop1.html) says it best (ahem).
