View Full Version : I beat Shenmue II last night

I know that this thread won't get too many responses - but I wanted to say that I beat Shenmue II last night - FINALLY. Sheesh, I thought that the game was going to end in Kowloon and then all that walking around trying to get th Bailou Village, JEEZ! I thought I was going to go nuts with all that, but then the ending was worth it, I guess it was a calm before the big bang cliff hanger.

Question - does Shenhua have magic powers or something? She was able to control the flowers in that one scene if you choose to take the detour and see the flowers. Also, she assists in getting the sword into the slot without touching it!

I've done some reading online that there are some sketches and screen shots from the possible Shenmue 3 (not shenmue online). I know about the online game too (which looks lame, I dont quite understand how they can continue the story with an MMORPG - but what's the deal with everyone being able to shoot Hadoken like fireballs? - it happens in the Shenmue Online game trailer)

The Story did get very interesting and I think that I am happy that I chose to play this one on the Xbox rather than the Dreamcast. I thought that the voice acting was excellent too, except for Ryo, who always sounds like he is asleep that stiff bastard.

Anyone - comment on your thoughts after finishing the game? And what do you think the likelyhood is that we will ever get a conclusion?

The Saturn video that's unlocked was very cool too, I can't beleive that they had the game up and running on Saturn and then had to do it all over again!

Semi story spoiler -
after you find out that Lan Di killed Iwao (ryo's papa) in vengence for his own father's death, I also noticed that both Ryo and Lan Di have injuries on their face in the same spot, Lan Di has the scar and Ryo has the bandage - any other similarities or interesting stuff about the game/universe that's not well known please chime in!

I haven't heard anything about Shenmue in awhile. Is there going to BE a Shenmue 3?

I'm sure it'll be in a bundle pack with Zillion 3 and Sonic Xtreme.

Shenmue Online has already been announced and screenshots have been shown.

A year or so ago they confirmed that they were still working on the thing (for xbox), but I haven't heard a bit of news since then.

Shenmue Online is all well and good, but will it continue/complete the story from the first two games?

I've got to say though, the story aspect of Shenmue never really WAS the strong point, just because it was so slow-moving. I imagine that in the end, it'll actually be a better experience in online, open-ended fashion, but that doesn't mean that they should leave the series proper unfinished.

I don't see how they can complete the story with a game where you do not play as Ryo (Shenmue Online: you create your own character). Hardly any solid info is available about shenmue online either, other than exist in the same universe, fight on the rooftop and watch joy's assets jiggle.

I remember posting my own thread ranting and raving about that sucky ending after a wonderfull game when I got my XBox about a year ago. :)

They should at LEAST put the ending a little better to give it some closure in case number 3 never comes out.....

Allegedly, she's a bad-assed mage. If you get the bad ending in Shenmue II, after Lan Di kills Ryo, Lan drops by the villiage, to "Take [Shenhua's] power for the Chiyomen." Likewise, there have been demos where she actually takes goons down with Dragon-ball esque powers.

Yeah. Likewise, you grab the picture of Iwao with Lan Di's father? in front of the Shenmue tree.

Forget you. Shenmue was a serial series, and was intended as such before it was released. If you want a full game, stop playing at the end of Disk 3. Even the end of Disk 4 has more heart and closure to it than Xenosaga. :-P

What disks? it was a one CD game. I have the XBox version.

And I still stick by my guns -- that ending was the WORST CLIFFHANGER ENDING I have EVER seen. And now it looks like Part 3 may never come out. At least don't have it end on such a cheesy scene!

it's on 4 GDROMS on Dreamcast.

You have no soul? What? Disc 3 of the dreamcast version cuts out when Ryo leaves for Guilin.

What's an example of a good cliffhanger ending? I'd argue Xenosaga's was far worse, because it was unexpected. If you're going to make your game serial-style, at least have the courtesy to tell the fans eagerly awaiting it. And maybe if they cut all the Allen dialogue, they could have condensed it into one game.

In general, I'm failing to see why you found the ending so poor. Maybe some quirks in the translation?

If Shenmue Online comes over, I'll upgrade my PC to good settings for it, pay full retail on launch day (maybe even...gasp, preorder), and whatever the monthly fee is.

If it DOESN'T, I'm going to learn korean, reverse-engineer server software, and host a pirate server.

Wow, any web resources available that show her in more detail in situations like you've mentioned above? What happens when Lan Di goes to Bailu Villlage?

[quote]Yeah. Likewise, [regarding similarities between Lan Di & Ryo in reference to each characters facial wound] you grab the picture of Iwao with Lan Di's father? in front of the Shenmue tree.

Yeah I picked up the photograph when i played Shenmue 1. I played Shenmue II on Xbox, so they automatically give you the picture in your inventory - I'll have to check out the image again...

And for the record, I thought the ending rocked. I love cliff hanger endings. I've been praying for one in the Megaman series forever, but let's not get off topic.

I still don't know if I have any interest in Shenmue online, simply b/c I dont understand how they could continue the story if you don't play as Ryu. I'd asume that, like the new online Matrix game, there will be in game events that you can view (such as the rumored return of Neo). But the Online trailer takes place in hong kong - what of bailu!? dang sega...

I'm not going to bother responding here anymore cause I see it's pointless.

I'll just say that I never had a Dreamcast, I enjoyed the game on the XBox, I LIKED the ending to Xenosaga because at least it brought SOME closure, and I sitll hope for a Shenume III someday. :)

Not on me, no. The bad ending is pretty well known. If you have an Xbox, it was included in the JSRF/Sega GT demo disk, and you could probably read up on it on Game FAQs. As for the dragon-ball type powers, I pretty much googled it once I beat Shenmue II. I'd recommend you do the same. The situation I described I recall reading about on a site dedicated to Shenmue. It's obvious looking at Shenmue I and II that Sazuki is planning what's going to happen way before they have to contend with actually programming the game. That's why I'd call Shenmue a badassed franchise. :-)

Ah well. At least we can agree on Shenmue III. :)

After I read up on it on Game FAQs, I discovered that they really DON'T go into what the bad ending is about. So here's the deal:

Pass an incredible amount of days in the game, such that no ordinary person playing the game would waste: (IE, get to June 31, whatever year.) Easiest way to do this is to, during the Wude deal, repeatedly fail the barber's mission by pressing A and chickening out.

When Ryo goes to sleep that night, there's a cutscene, in all black, of Lan Di sneaking up on Ryo, offing him, and leaving with the Phoenix Mirror in hand.

Cut to Shenhua. She's standing on what seems to be the cliff upon which she was singing, outside of the cave. It's raining. She replaces the usual Shenmue speech with something akin to...

"The skies grow dark,
the dragon envelops the phoenix.
All hope is lost."

She turns around. Lan Di is standing behind her, the Phoenix mirror in his hand behind his back. With a menacing look in his eyes, and her obviously looking helpless, Lan asserts: "I will take your power... for the Chiyo."

Cut to black.
