View Full Version : THE rarest Gamecube game?

I've noticed a few posts recently talking about the rarity of Gamecube games, and I remembered something I read in Nintendo Power. Apparently, before the release of Custom Robo here in the states, NOA sent out a demo disc containing a preview version of the game to select "Sages" from the Nintendo.com boards to "beta test" it. Now, that's all I remember and for all I know it could have just been the retail version sent out early (though why they would bother sending out a final version to be "beta tested" is beyond me), but I thought it might be interesting to find out more about. If anything, it could turn out to be the Cube's "holy grail"...

Uh no, because it's a beta version, every game has a beta version it just depends who gets their hands on it. More of novelty then something spend their life and money towards, it's a nice thing to add to a collection, but in no means something that sticks out. Now Tower of Druaga bonus disc for GameCube will certainly become rare down the line. ;)

It all depends on if we're talking about the rarest commercially released game or not... but that one would definitely be high on any list.

Yeah the Tower of Druaga and Metal Gear discs are certainly the rarest games available to the public as they were only given in limited production and under certain circumstances. Oddly enough they are both NES games too.

I believe that NCAA Basketball 2K3 is quite rare, and was selling for $70+ a few months ago. It has since gone down in price, but is still considered the rarest current generation game.

Metal Gear bonus disc shipped w/Twin Snakes Gamecube.
If it's available seperately, then I haven't heard about it. I'd like to get my hands on it, but only if I can get it by itself.

Correlation: it was only available with the Metal Gear Solid Gamecube bundle in Japan. After a copy myself actually. I have the Tower of Druaga disc (available from pre-ordering Baten Kaitos in Japan back end of 2003).

You can add the japanese versions of pacman vs & the zelda collection to the list too.
The zelda collection was only available through club nintendo in japan. A few months back you could still get it but now its no longer on there so if you didn't get a copy thats it, your out of luck.
As for pacman vs, there was a version released normally packaged inside copies of R racing evolution but the club nintendo version of pacman vs is different in content, it has the same game but theres a club nintendo screen when it boots up & there are some extra demo stuff on the disk too.

RE2 and RE3 are only costly because they have demand, once this generation of consoles passes no one will give a rats ass about the games.

In the US, as far as official releases go, I would say that the Soul Calibur II demo disc is the rarest. I'm pretty sure it was a pre-order bonus at TRU. I also only know of 3 copies in existence, and it is being a pain in the neck for me to find. As far as games go, I think that NCAA Basketball 2K3 is a rarity. But I think that at this stage early in the Gamecubes life, we really need to just wait and see which games come to be the trickiest to locate.

the GC versions sell well on Ebay BECAUSE there is demand for them they have lasted through 2 GENERATIONS my friend so there will still be demand for them long after this generation ;)

Well seeing as how I own the games for Dreamcast and Playstation, yeah, I do think I remember, chump. All I'm saying is, knowing Capcom and how they love to whore out their old treasures they'll rerelease the games once again, and if not the RE series will continue. Want to know why people don't pay $100 for RE2 for PSX? Because it's an old console. Once the GameCube is behind us the same will be said about these games. Only about 6 months ago RE2 and RE3 were selling for about $30-40 new, now because of RE4 being release they have skyrocketed in price.
This isn't rocket science, it's the facts. I can prove it to you in years to come.

The SNES version of Chrono Trigger still goes for a lot of money while the version released on the PSX, the more advanced system, with updated graphics goes for less money. This is completely contrary to your argument and exposes the flaws in your logic.
RE2 and RE3 are going for $70 or more because of supply and demand. There simply weren't that many of them as opposed to RE, RE0 and now RE4. Quite frankly, I don't see Capcom re-releasing RE2 and RE3 especially since they both have now been released on 3 consoles, with RE2 being released 2X on the PSX. It seems they produced a lot more RECV than RE2 and RE3 as I still see those new and used all over. Either that, or it wasn't as popular as the other two, and it now has been released on 4 consoles.
Now the reason RE2 and RE3 on the PSX don't go for as much money is simple: Capcom flooded the market with those games when they were released. It is a lot simpler to find a PSX version of either game than the GC version. Even the DC versions are harder to find and go for more money than the PSX versions.
Anyways, to get back on topic, other GC games that may be rare are Gauntlet Dark Legacy and Cubivore. However, I seem to recall there may have been a second run on Cubivore. Goblin Commander seems to be another one that I don't see very often, and it goes for $29.99 used at most game stores, while its XBOX and PS2 counterparts go for $9.99. I've only seen 1 used for the GC. Worms 3D, Space Raiders and Tube Slider may also be future rarities, but the price for them currently does not reflect that.
You may also want to keep a lookout for the versions of I-Ninja and R: Racing Revolution that came with Pac-Man VS. The problem is, the cases didn't have a holder for the separate game disc like Pac-Man World did. They simply inserted the cd with instructions into the case. The only way you knew it came with the game was a sticker placed on the shrinkwrap. Another cool combo pack is Darkened Skye/Outlaw Golf. i don't see too many of those either. Haven't checked ebay lately.
Other demos you may consider are the Mario Kart Double Dash version that came with the bonus disc if you pre-ordered it. Also, didn't they do a similar thing with Rogue Squadron III Rebel Strike?
Lastly, I just recently picked up a version of Metroid Prime with a Metroid Prime 2 Echoes Bonus Disc in it. Does anybody know anything about this version and how you got it?

What's updated about Chrono Trigger's graphics? To the best of my knowledge, all they did was add some lame anime FMV sequences. The PlayStation version of Chrono Trigger is pretty widely considered inferior to the SNES version due to painful loading times and such. That's one reason why the original goes for more money.
Really, it could go either way. Let's just say that Capcom does re-release RE2 and 3 in a future console generation: if it's a poor effort and the GameCube versions remain superior, they may still keep their current value; if the new versions are considered even better than the older ones, the GameCube versions may lose a lot of their value.

Wow, can't believe we're talking about this one again.
To avoid any confusion, let's get our ducks in a row.
Like with ANY system library, you have the following to consider:
US release vs. Non-US release
Retail release, or packaging bonus.
Having said that, this discussion was clearly mentioning the second choice for each subcategory.
If you are asking what is the "rarest" US offical release, not some preorder bonus or packaging gimmick designed to clear out the warehouse of extra stuff, then the answer is simple.
Sega Sports NCAA College Basketball. Period.
This is not a matter of opinion, it's a matter of numbers.
If you are asking what the rarest US release is that can be played on a Gamecube, then that's where it gets dodgy.
US official releases that were done as a preorder (Star Wars Arcade, Pokemon Colluseum) really are not difficult to find at all. Will they be someday, who the hell knows. The two disc releases are probably going to be harder to find.
I've said this one before, and I will say it again - the Star Wars: Rogue Squadron III - Rebel Strike that is packaged with the bonus preorder disc in the two disc snap-case with the actual game release and orange sticker on the front is probably the hardest of the US releases.
I have one, and have not heard, nor seen anyone else claim to have one. I know there are more out there, but you certainly cannot get one now at retail. They were only sold at Target, although there is nothing mentioning Target on the packaging.
Other packaging releases that may be harder to locate are the ones with retailer specific information on them - Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour with the Target Bullseye Tour packaging for example. Also, the KMart releases for Super Mario Sunshine and StarFox (for example.)
If you honestly want to know what import-only releases may become the rarest, you may as well stop now.
This is just like the yearly discussion about which NES releases should and should not be considered part of the "official list".
Collect imports if you like, obviously. Just don't expect them to show up in the DP US Gamecube release guide.
Sorry to ramble...

I reckon the rarest GameCube games will be the ones that you get with your *Stars* on the Nintendo site... Ie, Pokemon Box (Standalone version) and Zelda: Ocarina Of Time & Master Quest (Standalone version)
Although these games are available as extra discs in other games, the standalone versions are much rarer - Pokemon box only having had around 4000 copies made. (PAL version)
Of course, the disc which comes with Pokemon Colloseum is far more common, as is the Zelda disc which comes with Wind Waker...

i got a major score by finding a copy of NCAA Basketball 2K3 for cube for 15 bucks at EB of all places. The original price tag was 45 bucks, but there was a 15 price tag slapped on top of it (with the name of the game and everything, it wasnt a scam). I seriously see that game everywhere. Everywhere meaning more than enough to have 20+ sealed copies if I really desired to spend $20 a game to buy 'em.
I'm not sure that's so much a rarity as it is a game that nobody bought.

No offense, honestly, but I have no idea what you're talking about.
Your facts aren't even correct.
Supply and demand is EXTREMELY important to the relative pricing of video game (and all) collectables.
The more of something there is, the easier it is to get. The easier it is to get, the more competition there is amongst sellers. This results in price reduction - PERIOD.
The less there is of something, the harder it is to get. The harder it is to get, the less competition there is amongst sellers. This results in sellers being able to ass-rape the interested buyers - PERIOD.
This is the heart of capitalism, and has everything to do with prices getting out of hand.
Unfortunately, the only problem with this model is that there can be instances of incorrect information relating to supply. Some jackasses start the word of mouth that something is harder to find than it really is. Next thing, it's friggin' gospel. No real factual data to back that information up, mind you, but everyone believes what they hear.
Next thing, the prices go up, and up. After a while, they plateau, and will come back down after all those folks who "have to have it" spend a fortune. Assuming the supply is still there, the price will definitely decrease.
Oh, and by the way, the release of Suikoden IV and Resident Evil 4 have almost absolutely nothing to do with the prices of the previous releases going up. Suikoden II has been selling for top dollar for a while now - even before part III was released.
However, if people play the new ones and like them, but never played the older ones, they may get interested in trying part I or II - and seek them out.
That doesn't necessarily mean they will pay top dollar to get them though.
Sorry for the Econ lesson, but what you said simply isn't true.

There are actually two versions of the RE4 demo disc. One that was sold in stores in a regular gamecube case, and other that was in a carboard mailer. I don't know the rarity of the one in the cardboard mailer, but it has a vietiful joe 2 advertisement on it that takes up half of the cover.

I dont think I said Supply and Demand wasnt important, people are only saying its becuz of Supply and Demand. They have no idea what theyre talking about.Lemme say it again, I said that the price of RE2/3 went up due to the release of RE4, if RE4 did not come out the price wouldnt even have changed. The price be4 RE2 on ebay was MAYBE $70, and RE3 was selling for barely nething. As for Suikoden1/2 went up in price due to Suikoden4 coming out, if it wasnt for SK4 to come out those games wouldnt have risen. SK1 was barely selling for $30, and SK2 was selling for MAYBE $120, now SK1 goes for $50+ and SK2 goes for $150. Thats what I was saying. Since ur telling me that it wasnt due to RE4/SK4 releases, why did it go up? It couldnt have been for nothing. Yes SK2 was selling for Top$ but now you need to give up gold for that game since SK4 came out, but still those other games went up in price, I wonder why then.
People want to collect the 4 games, and waste $300 on both series. O well the prices should calm down soon.
Thx for econ lessons but maybe you shuould go back, becuz prices are not gonna soar up just when both games about to get released. Its not coincidental. Please explain to me why the prices went up, just when RE4 and SK4 came out. Dont say becuz people played the recent ones so they decide to buy the old ones, dont say becuz it was coincidental or dont tell me it was becuz of supply, the supply did not even change. My way is the only possible way the prices couldve risen.
See what u made me do, had to write down all this and waste my time with you when Iknow im correct, damn it.

Actually the price of both RE2 and RE3 on the Cube went up long before RE4 came out. In fact it seems to have spiked directly after the release of the second RE film at the cinema...

Some units were on shelf, got sold and the rest were pulled. Official figures put the actual number of sales at around 6,000 which by far and away makes it the rarest Cube game (as its sales were limited by Sega themselves here).

I just picked one up for $16.99 at Gamerush. Should I hold onto it or sell it on ebay?
Also, does anyone know the rarity/production run of the Freestyle Street Soccer releases for Blockbuster? One of the Gamerush's near my house had like 20 of them for $4.99 a piece. With the buy one get one 1/2 off that would be only $3.75 a piece. The other thing is that I've only seen them at this Gamerush, and not at any of the other ones near me.

I own the Zelsa collection but i didnt get it through club Nitnendo. Target was giving them away with the purchase of a gamecube 2 years ago.

I'll explain. Supply did not change, as you stated, but the DEMAND changed. I don't know if it was because the new games came out or because the onion crop was bountiful, but for whatever reason, the DEMAND went up. This is the second and equally important half of the "supply and demand" rule you apparently despise.

The most rare US gamecube release is NCAA Basketball 2K3. The most rare US bonus/demo disc would be the Soul Calibur II demo. Also the earlier kiosk demos are very hard to get.

Exactly how "rare" is the Soul Calibur II Cube demo? I remember right before it came out, I received a mailer at my store which contained 3 Soul Calibur II demos, one for Cube, PS2 & Xbox. I put them in a box with the rest of my demos and never really gave it much thought after that. I believe they are even still sealed. Hmmm...who knew?

well, it should be quite easy to get from french retailers, so it's not rare yet imho, but yes, in the future this is going to be rare, as will MAXPLAY Vol. 01

Dakar 2 is rare? Never knew that. Maybe I should go pick up that copy in Gamestation. Looks like a crap game though. Hmm

well, i must admit i haven't watched it lately but a while ago you'd have to wait up to 2 weeks for it to show up on ebay, that's pretty scarce for a current generation title
what is gamestation asking for one? if it's cheap you might have to grab one for me :D

It's actually a decent game if you like racers. It's a little too short, though.

and "V-Rally 3"
I hardly saw a copy of that game here.
Also "Casper" is also on top of the PAL list

Can anyone confirm or deny the rarity of Spirits & Spells?
It's only been mentioned in here once, but looking back, I've only seen it once (today, in fact), and it doesn't seem to have popped up on eBay that often.

Whereas Kris and I both have a copy and we've seen at least another 3 in the shops around her area LOL
Maybe Chicago has them all? :P
But yeah, it doesn't appear on eBay that much... it's an uncommon at best me thinks.
