My son and I both have xbox's. We were wondering if they can be connected to play Halo 2, each on separate tv's.

would I get something like this:

a crossover cable will suffice

the auction is a bit vauge but since they say connect 2 xboxes together then yeah it might just be a crossover cable

so, I can connect them together and play head to head without an internet connection?

can you recommend a crossover cable that would do the trick?

Yes. You can connect upto 16 Xbox consoles together locally.

For two machines, all you need is an ethernet cable. That's all the auction is for (it doesn't say what it is, but that's what it is.)

For more than two, you need a switch/router/hub.

You should skip the auction and just go to any computer store (even Wal Mart) and buy an ethernet cable.

This may sound self-evident, but you also need 2 copies of Halo 2.

I don't think a patch cable will work, if it is anything like standard networking. a crossover cable is what you can use between 2 xboxs without a hub.

^ Correct.

A regular ethernet cable won't do a damn thing from just one Xbox to another. You'll need a crossover cable. Microsoft makes one as well as other cable manufacturers. Ethernet cable will link two xboxes only if you're using a router or a hub.

Also, what games support 16? I can't think of any that I've heard of supporting 16 players. I thought it was 16 total players across 4 Xboxes?

yea, when me and my buddies are playing and we dont want to go on live we use my crossover cable.....a regular cat-5 cable wont do shit without a hub / router

Game Stores sell the Xbox "System Link cable" for :As I paid $14.99..

They can be found on Ebay Cheaper though..(XBOX SYSTEM LINK CABLE)

http://www.eldirect.ca/ebay/ITEM8154.JPG

The Xbox System Link Cable connects two consoles together to enable multi-Xbox head-to-head gameplay.
Exclusively for use with the Xbox video game system

MICROSOFT XBOX SYSTEM LINK CABLE Item number: 8165906910

MICROSOFT XBOX SYSTEM LINK CABLE ~~~ BRAND NEW ~~~ Item number: 8165020373

Now you can connect your XBOX gaming console to your friends! Two player is not as much fun with one television and a split screen. But with the XBOX system link cable you can connect multiple XBOX units together and play head to head against your friends with more than one TV.

This System link Cable comes complete with a built-in crossover that allows you to link to other XBOX consoles. A normal Cat5 cable does not have the crossover capability. This is made by Microsoft for the XBOX gaming system.

Features:

Connects Two consoles together
Enables multi XBOX head to head gameplay
Easy snap in connection
Double your pleasure
Only works with games that have multi system support, i.e. HALO and HALO 2

Speaking of crossover cables, is it a hard-wired limitation in PC Ethernet hardware that requires you to use a crossover cable when hooking two network cards directly to each other, or is it possible to use an ordinary patch cable if you use specialized software?

It's a physical thing, it can not be overcome by software.

I took one of those small cable extenders and rewired the end, so I can make any normal cable a crossover cable in a pinch.

Can you use the Link cable as an Ethernet Cable? That thing is pretty well made.

Hey

Network cables are all standard, Besides the CAT5,4,3 and E versions that refer to shielding and pair twisting only, they are either crossover or straight through. There is nothing special about the xbox cable other than it is good quality.

Think about when you will have more xboxes :)

Switching hubs can be bought for almost the same cost as a 20 foot crossover cable.

Check out this $14 8port hub

p.s. my entire house is wired with CAT5 so I could play 4 xboxes if I want :)

You might want to check your local toys R us. I just picked up that link cable for $2.24 it was in the green tag sale at 70% off. Also, It is the official xbox brand cable not a cheap 3rd party one.
