Yuppicide and Digital Press are throwing a month long contest. We've put together a nice bunch of prizes between the two of us for 5 lucky winners. It's the:

http://tinypic.com/1j47pv

What? It's a contest. Details on how and what will be listed below.
When? Contest starts IMMEDIATELY and the deadline will be NOON EST on March 3rd, 2005.
Who? Everyone registered at digitpress.com's forums is allowed to enter except for Joe and myself.
Why? I have some cool stuff I want to give away and thought this would be fun. Plus, I really like the game Mappy.

How?: You must submit a recreation of the Mappy theme song. Not Mappy Land or any other game. The original Mappy. You can either download the MAME ROM of Mappy, Mappy for an NES emulator, GBA emulator, or maybe you already own the arcade machine. Maybe you've had that catchy tune stuck in your head for the past 10 years, well now it's time to put it to good use! So you're not confused.. this is the tune heard while playing the game. If you're stuck, you can find a version of this here: http://www.digitpress.com/dpsoundz/mp3.htm

You can recreate the song anyway you want, but it must resemble the original song. You can hum the tune, play it on guitar, etc. You get the idea.. be creative about it. The CLINCHER is that you also have to make up your own lyrics for the song. They don't necessarily have to be Mappy related. They could just be anything funny. That's right, it's Mappy Karaoke night!

Submissions can be .wav file or .mp3. Mp3 is preferred because of the smaller file size. Submissions can goto digitalpress@email.com -- you must submit your real name and your forum name. All submissions after March 3rd, 2005 will not be counted. Lyrics do not need to be included in your .mp3 or .wav submission.. just the theme song needs to be recreated.

At the end of the contest the entries will be posted on the forums for everyone to vote on.

What will you win? The top five people with the most votes will win a prize pack. No telling you what's inside until after the winners are announced. All I will say is that it's all video game related, some of it is rare Mappy stuff, some of it is just random stuff Joe and myself do not want anymore, etc. Some really nice stuff here. Each prize pack will be smaller than the one before.

Can you please change the font color in your post so that most of us can see it without needing to highlight it? Thanks!

Otherwise, seems like a cool contest!

Yep.. looks like Joe (or someone) changed the font color. Sorry. Read fine on my screen.

Nice piano sounding rendition of that midi. I'll try and find or get the sound from the actual game and post it here.

if you get it on midi that would be awesome, it'd make it easy to work with from there, i'm ready to tear it up and make it funky :D

This is probably a longshot but would there happen to be sheet music for this song somewhere on the web?

You can make your own based off of a MIDI. Download a program called MIDINotate Musician (http://www.notation.com) (there's a demo you can download), and just open the MIDI with that program. Tada!

Sweet thanks, I'll try it out. Also, the website you linked doesn't work, it's notation.com ;)

Sounds fun. :)

I'm a little confused about how you want the lyrics, though. Are you saying that they don't even have to be included in the music file? They can just be typed up text on the side?

Assuming we want the lyrics in the music file, would it be okay if someone else did the singing? Do they have to be coherent lyrics or can they just be sounds? Do the lyrics have to last for the whole song or can they be kind of minimal?

Sorry for the millions of questions, I just want to make sure I do it right. :)

I second these questions. There won't be any singing if I do a song (be thankful). How about a single word in the song, would that count as lyrics? ;)

So you're not confused.. this is the tune heard while playing the game. If you're stuck, you can find a MIDI version of this on DP's site here: http://digitalpress.5u.com/dpsoundz/soundmus.htm

umm.. actually that makes me a lot more confused because that midi file (direct link: http://digitalpress.5u.com/dpsoundz/mid/mappy.mid ) sounds NOTHING like the tune that plays during Mappy :?

You can download the Mappy music here:

http://www.fourhman.com/mappy/music/classicbgm.mp3

Clarification: Lyrics will be emailed with your submission as text along with your mp3 or wav sound. Lyrics do not need to be sung. Just include your remake of the background music and submit your lyrics as text.

Whenever Joe wants he'll get them posted here for you guys to read/hear. The more imaginative and funny the better.

I will say this.. the top prize pack has about 8 or 9 items in it so far.

You don't HAVE to sing the lyrics, but I'll tell you this: you will certainly get much higher scores if you DO.

I'm going to change the link.I didn't realize the MIDI wasn't the main theme. Thanks for pointing this out!

Something else I'd like to point out - you don't necessarily have to REMIX the song. Sing it, hum it, tap dance to it KARAOKE-style if you prefer. The idea is to get the most fun "interpretation" of the theme song.

HAVE FUN WITH IT!

Someone better incorporate the Engrish from the PC88 version's intro into their lyrics.

yuppicide

To let you know: Lyrics to "Oh Mappy Day" and that one other Mappy lyrics I see floating around the net won't be considered. :)

If Joe wants to post entries here as they come in I have no problem with that or you can just show them all at the end.

Of course!

@EVERYONE: think like an artist! The rules are VERY loose and you'll be judged on yoru creativity and interpretation. Don't limit yourself.

you did make it clear, i just found the midi file that matches the wave just incase some of us with music software would like to use the midi file for a template. also with the midi file it is possible to make sheet music with certain music files.

Make it longer if you need, sing if you want, don't sing if you want. Must be a remake of the song, not just the song with your stuff thrown on top.

quick question. i'm trying to record the lyrics but i have a friggin cold at the moment so they are coming out crappy. i figured i'd go back into the rules to see if they have to performed as well and i cam across this little bit

Lyrics do not need to be included in your .mp3 or .wav submission..

does that mean as long as the music is recreated and the lyrics are written down it can be submitted?

Sure! I think the judges would prefer an actual sing-a-long though. Just something I heard ;)
