What do you think? A game can be influential can be other ways besides just play mechanics and graphics, too. Here are my picks.

2600: Space Invaders (first? arcade port)

CV: Donkey Kong (first *good* arcade port)

Intv: Baseball (control scheme)

NES: Super Mario Bros. (introduced platform gaming to the masses)
Genesis: Mortal Kombat (violence in video games)

Game Boy: Tetris (helped sell a ton of Gameboys, introduced gaming to previous non-gamers)

SNES: Super Mario Kart (arguably the best multiplayer racing game at that point)

N64: Mario 64 (3d platforming)

Dreamcast: Soul Calubur (first home fighting game that was as good as an arcade one)

Feel free to disagree, and add the systems I left off.

2600: Pitfall (realistic graphics, non-arcade platformer, 3rd party success)

INTV: Utopia (just because it was an amazing simulation game in an era of arcade or action titles)

Vectrex: Minestorm (arguably best pack-in ever, best game on the system)

C64: One-on-One (licensed sports characters)

SNES: SF2 (first good home fighter)

DC: Jet Set Radio (style of the game, graphics, music)

I'd give the arcade translation award to the Saturn for the Capcom fighters (Xmen vs. SF, etc). Those were pretty damn close to perfection.

The games that shaped a system? Those were often the pack-ins, in my opinion.

Atari 2600 - Space Invaders or Combat
Intellivision - ML Baseball
Colecovision - Donkey Kong
NES - Super Mario Bros.
Super NES - Super Mario World
Sega Genesis - Sonic the Hedgehog

And it goes on. I gotta say, most game companies packed in the title that showed off the system's abilities that best.

Saturn- Nights

Playstation- Final Fantasy 7 (didn't care for it all that much, but it got more rpg translated)

I'm sure i'll come up with more later.

Just Three-

NES: Super Mario Brothers (Introduced complexity to the masses)
N64: Super Mario 64 (3D gaming)
GCN: The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (The most beautiful 3D game ever created... seamless "Cell Shading" *can't tell your looking at Cell Shading*. Every Fram looks like an animation Cell... first time since Dragon's Lair. But this time it wasn't made with Animation Cells)

Dreamcast: Soul Calubur (first home fighting game that was as good as an arcade one)

Feel free to disagree, and add the systems I left off.

Actually, the Dreamcast game was quite a bit BETTER than the arcade game... the original ran off the PSX-based System 12 board (with more RAM and a faster processor) and the Dreamcast smoked it.

Tekken 1 & 2, on the other hand, originally ran on the System 11 board, which was basicly a PSX. The home versions were better in that they added the cinemas and extra fighters. Tekken 3 was on System 12, so the PSX game is a bit of a downgrade.

Cheers
