Anyone else miss the days when a new console was out like ever few months and it would fail only to be replaced by another? i sure do...i remember having the sega saturn and going to media play and playing neo-geo, 3DO ps1 and atari jaguar, always wishing i had like $800 bucks to dish out ... anyone else miss the good ole days?

Of course, I actually came so close to buying a 3DO, but ended up with a Saturn.
Neo-Geo was unheard of to me back in the 90's, all I knew of it, was that it was merely just an Arcade machine. Yet I would read the last few pages of each EGM issue and wonder to myself "What the hell is a CDZ and why is it so damn expensive?"
I miss the days when you could walk into Babbages or Electronic Boutique...and see Jaguar, 3DO, SNES, Genesis, Sega CD all lined up side by side

As exciting as new systems are, I don't miss those days at all.
I prefer THESE days, when you can settle in with your system and spend your money on GAMES instead of having to replace your consoles and peripherals every six months.
Remember, this is coming from a guy who bought all of those systems on launch day. I don't regret it, but I don't miss it either.

I do miss the old days but not really for those reasons. True, I remember my brother buying a Saturn and selling it just a few weeks later, taking a huge loss on it. He said it was a crappy system and, compared to the PlayStation, I suppose it was. It's funny how things work, though. Nowadays, I'd much rather have a Saturn than a PS (I don't have either).

Since im only 20 i dont miss the good old days of the early 90 and the sega, snes, 3do saturn because the only way I could ever get a new console would be as a Christmas gift. Thats how I got my Genesis and my SNES but I saved my allounce up for almost a year to buy a Nintendo 64 then my mom and I went to Toys R Us and I left with a Playstation.

Out of all of them I only bought the jaguar, I enjoyed it, as well as the 32x

I'm with Joe. I'm happy with what I have and am actually not looking forward to PS3, the next XBox, etc. I'll just stick with what I have now, thank you very much...

I agree with Joe, I don't miss this at all. Yes, I have extremely fond memories of going into Montgomery Ward's and playing back-to-back-to-back CD-i, 3DO, and Sega CD (they had the X'Eye on display, if I remember correctly), but I don't want those days back, because I actually keep up on current hardware now. No way in hell do I want exclusive games coming out on brand new $400 hardware that's going to flop very soon.

I'm siding with Joe, Rogmeister and TheRedEye too on this. It is a fortunate thing that I was a poor broke college student with relatively little interest toward videogames back in the early 90s or else it would have been costly... especially when you consider the short lifespan of those consoles. I do remember my local videostore having the 3DO for rent and I wonder what the heck it was (like most people back in the day, my knowledge of then-current console stopped with the SNES and the Genesis).

I agree I dont miss those days AT ALL.
For years after the SNES a gamer never knew wich systems were going to fail: 3DO,Jaguar, even Saturn to a lesser extent or wich would succeed:Playstation and......N64 I guess :hmm:
Anyway Im sticking with my PS2 and Gamecube for a loooong time at least until the PS3 or Xboxnext get down to a reasonable price.
After being an avid gamer since the old Atari2600 days I see this generation lasting the longest with all the potential the current systems have I think it will be a long time before developers tap each individual systems full capabilities in both gameplay and graphics.
I mean just look at Splinter Cell:chaos theory on PS2 who knew PS2 could look that good? or RE4 on Gamecube? innovative controls and incredible graphics @_@
Yeah for the first time in ages im not too hyped about the new consoles no matter how "perty" the new Madden or NFL game may look LOL

Yes, and no. I was looking on the back of my one of my old comic books recently and saw an ad for the old Popeye game. The ad included screenshots for nine different systems; a mix of consoles and computers. The problem with this approach was that if you had a lower-end system you always felt like you were missing out. These days the graphic systems are far more comparable and one can easily get a popular title for whatever system you've got without resenting the system itself.

Those "good 'ol days" were what put me off videogaming for a couple of years. The whole sega CD debacle ticked me off enough that I didn't touch another game system until late in the life of the PSX when Metal Gear Solid came out.
Even to this day I hold off until a system's second price drop before jumping in. God, when I think of the number of newspapers my skinny little ass delivered to raise the $300 for that Sega CD......
.....aww hell, at least it introduced me to Lunar, which remains in my top 5 to this day.

I miss those days in the sense that there was more risk-taking involved. The attitude of the times seemed to be "Hey kids! Let's put on a console!"
The attitude now is "Let's just make software for Sony".

Im with you, dude. But I dont have the money to buy new systems very often. I hate missing out on a new Console.
I feel better knowing my system will still have new games coming out for it regularly. Ill be satisfied with my Cube (I have the other 2 sytems too)for a while into the next console generation.

I do miss when there were more portables....competition to the Gameboy was fun to wacth develop, since it was a new market. But for consoles....nah. I knew things like the 3do et al were going to fail. The Playstation is really the only system I was surprised succeeded, since a system from Sony just seemed so out of the blue, not taht I didn't read the news on it at the time. The NeoGeo was an interesting enigma...it survived mostly on arcade sales, I imagine. 3dO should have made arcade hardware....the system may have survived. Shit, if you have a $700 system, what do you expect? Success? SNK did the right thing in making the NG home and arcade...a truly unique system.

I remember the very first time I ever saw Neo Geo cartridge prices. I thought it was a misprint, I just couldn't fathom that there was anyone willing to pay $199 for a single game. Of course, I was like 10 years old at the time, so $199 may as well have been a million dollars.

Sorry all I had to play at that time was shareware PC titles.

I loved those PC shareware titles. I miss those days because those were the days of the Ultimas (+ Underworlds), Wing Commanders, Commander Keens, Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM, Populous, the original SimCity, and so on and so forth. There was always something new and exciting coming out for the PC. I remember when EB Games had mostly PC games!
Now the PC has limited genres and people make games that only work on the top 10% of PC machines...and the shareware games all suck like that dumb chipmunk and nut game someone posted here a week or so ago.
