Been playing this one for the last coupple of days and since I haven't seen this mentioned here yet I think I'll do that 'cause it's such a great little game.
Doukutsu Monogatari, or Cave Story, is a japanese freeware game. It's an arcade adventure similar in structure to, for example, Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap. The game has gotten an (official) english translation and is well worth a download.

You should try these other games as well, I know people that have them, but I don't know where they get them:

This game is GREAT.
And I can't even play it in English yet! Somebody has yet to translate the Apple version.
A lot more people should be checking this thing out. Great graphics, great gameplay, great music. I can't wait for the translated version for us OSX users.

Been hearing a lot about this game, will have to try it asap. apparently, the team behind it coded/finished the whole game in under one month. Impressive.

This game hasn't received nearly enough recognition.

I'm glad to finally have the english language patch. The game has a cute story, too!

I just started it and it seems awesome. It is similar to WB3 like was mentioned with some Metroid in there too.

Finally got around to playing this one.
Holy crap.
This takes me back to the first time I visited Hyrule, or the first time I sent Samus Aran on a mission. This is what video games can do that no other form of entertainment can. Unbelievable. Everyone needs to download this, it's FREEWARE, there is no excuse!
