hi there. i must confess that im not a gamer really, but an avid fan of old technology. specifically, computer sound effects and speech synthesis. i am on a search for an emulator that will do speech the way it was done back in the day when all this was new, and sounded wacky. you know, the commodores and ataris. is this possible? can i make my windows computer speak like an old 8 bit monster?

i am at my wits end and cant find anything that does this the way i want. any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks,

john

Well for SURE the Odyssey2 emulation does that! I'm not sure if you're just looking for old samples or trying to create original speech soundbytes but either way, O2 is the way to go.

Our emulation pages have O2. Here's a shortcut:

Games like KC's Krazy Chase and Smithereens have great voice synthesis, and Type 'n Tell allows you to enter words for the "computer" to repeat back!

Have fun.

thank you very much!

if possible, i would like to do the same with a commodore emulation, or atari emulation. those are the voices i had in mind in the first place, however i have not tried the O2 yet.

thanks again.

I usually use WinUAE (Amiga) emulator and boot up Workbench. Then use the old "Say" application. If you remember it, you can type whatever and it speaks it. Cool for cranking people! >)

where would i get this 'say' app? is it built in to the os?

Just finding the right Workbench with say is the problem. I have literally 50 different workbench dumps here, and only one out of them actually had the SAY program. Maybe the original owners of Workbench deleted the program before the disk was dumped? Who knows, all I do know is I only have one Workbench dump that has it included. If you need it I can email it over.

man that would be extra cool if you did that! :-D

i feel like such a dumbass... if you give it to me ill probably end up back here asking how to use the thing...

anyway, if you would like to email it to me, i can only recieve 1 meg and under, or you can instant message me on aim or yahoo: humanoidalert

thanks again so much. if i remember correctly, the amiga is one of the coolest clunky voices out there. perfect for what im going for...

well, the damn thing took up like 45k on the floppy.. if the workbench is 1.1,1.2,1.3 chances are it is dumped from someone who had no HD at all.. 45k was like a semester of papers.

Give me a day or so to find it. I have to test all my workbenches to find out which one it is now! They're all renamed by the TOSEC standard, and for the life of me I cannot remember which one it is I was using! No problem tho, I'll run through em sometime tomorrow and email it up. It'll be way under one meg btw. What you will need to do is get a kickstart rom (v1.3) and the winuae emulator. It may be some work getting it running, but we'll give you a hand. There is a link Raedon left for the kickstart roms and emulator in a post below (Thanks BTW Raedon!) ...get those first.

BTW: If you feel lazy and dont read the post below, here is the link Raedon luckily found:

Someone wrote or was writing a speak and spell emulator. Do a search for it on google.
