Super C, Ninja Gaiden Episode II, Ninja Gaiden Episode III... :D
I always compared Ninja Gaiden to Mega Man (why I used to hate it so much)... Mega Man is jut Ninja Gaiden without any real story, Gameplay Structure is virtually the same though. Trade your trusty sword for a Pistol / Mega Buster and work your way arround clever platforming obstacles and enemys to get to a predictable boss with a weekness and a life guage.
Bionic Commando
Rygar
Geurrilla War (Top / Down)
Ikari Warriors (Top / Down)
Jackal (Top / Down)
Kung Fu (more straigt forward action than carefully placed obstacles and enemys... same with Geurrilla and Ikari)

Vice: Project Doom for NES is like a clone of Ninja Gaiden, with some Spy Hunter like levels thrown in.

code name viper(capcom)
and contra force
code name viper is actually a really good game, to me it kinda feels like contra, the graphics are really close and the controls are almost the same. It has a little more depth then contra; but then again contra is THE best side scroller ever created, so ill llet you be the judge on this one.

Check out Kabuki Quantum Fighter and Shadow of the Ninja if you're a Ninja Gaiden fan.

Ninja Crusaders is very similar to Ninja Gaiden.
I don't know anything that even remotely compares to contra. I don't know how you think Megaman is similar to Ninja Gaiden. The control you have in controlling your characters is completely different.
If you like Megaman games, there is a game called Krion Conquest. It is EXACTLY like a Megaman game.

I can't believe no one has mentioned the underrated Heavey Barrel! That game was cool. Also check out the Ikari Warriors games. Ahhh damn, what a flashback! ;)

I have been looking for the same thing, but I don't think such a game exists. Not one that is anywhere near the same quality at least.
Other than the already mentioned games the closest you will get is probably the game "Shatterhand". It is an ok game, but not that great in my opinion.(edit: can see Nes-a-holic just beat me to it)

Kick Master for the NES is a great side scrolling action game... Great graphics, lots of moves and magic, I wonder why I never hear anyone mention it...

Check out Kabuki Quantum Fighter and Shadow of the Ninja if you're a Ninja Gaiden fan.
Shadow of the Ninja is definetly a game to check out. It even has two player support.
While these aren't exactly hack'n'slash, more boomerang tossing plus power up energy wave blasting, Power Blade 1 & 2 are worth checking out for side-scrolling fun on the NES.

I know it is not NES, but I'm afraid I must throw in the obligatory mention of ALIEN HOMINID for the GC / PS2.

I just had to second Shatterhand. Some really unique power ups and good control.

I don't see it. Aside from the fact that Ninja Gaiden and Mega Man are both platformers, they really don't have much in common. If anything, NG is like a faster Castlevania, but with cut scenes, more wall climbing and fewer stairs.

Power Blade 2
Low G Man (shitty graphics, but give it an hour and you'll be hooked)
Clash at Demonhead (see Low G Man note...one of the best NES games ever created).

"Holy Diver" for the Famicom.
Starring Ronnie James Dio? :)
I might be in the minority but I really enjoy S.C.A.T. (Special Cybernetic Attack Team, and yes, I had to look that up).
It's obviously not as good as Contra, but it's got the sidescrolling shoot-em-up with various types of weapons thing going on. Honestly, the first thing that crossed my mind when I played it was, "Holy crap, did they ever rip off Contra". The soundtrack and gameplay grows on you, though, and it might be worth checking out if you can find a copy.

Platoon is a pretty fun side scrolling shooter also - you can usually find it for cheap too!
Also check out Guerilla War & Shadow of the Ninja

Thank you! I was trying to remember the name of that one. If you like Contra and you are confining yourself to the NES this is a pretty decent clone. The catch is however that you can fly and rotate your guns, much like Forgotten Worlds. I'll second this choice.
