View Full Version : What you WANT to collect VS what you find

Anyone else have this problem?

I'm a big Sega guy, someday i hope to complete something crazy like "all US Sega releases" or such. But whenever I go thrifting, what do I find? NES, Atari, and older PC stuff. Don't get me wrong, it's cool stuff, and really rather nostalgic and all, but damnit, I want me some Sega! Little bit of a rant I suppose, but I was just wondering if anyone else experiences anything similar?

I'd also say I'd like to find NEC stuff, or later atari stuff (jaguar, lynx), since I never had those growing up, and was always interested (I genreally refer to this habit of mine to obtain things I couldn't have as a child as "Avenging my Childhood", but that might be a whole 'nother thread in and of itself).

I'm quite the opposite. I collect primarily NES, SNES, and Atari. Yet, when I thrift, I typically only find good Sega games. This is not to say that I don't buy them. A good game is a good game. But I often wish I would walk into a thrift store and see a wall of NES games like I often do with Genesis.

Yeah, I do end up buying a lot of it still regardless, as you mentioned.

maybe we should swap for awhile?

well, i usually buy everything i see that has a reasonable price so i don't mind THAT much...

but when i started collecting i was only doing SNES and what did i find? Sega stuff only, then a chance came to buy >50 dc games at once cheap so i decided to go for Dreamcast first (30 titles away from completion) and since then i still find almost only Mega CD, 32X, Mega Drive and Dreamcast, although also some SNES titles...

I'm a huuuuge Neo Geo fan. MVS, pocket, mooks, anything. Good luck ever finding that in the wild. A couple people here have but those are big exceptions.

Also, the thrifts/fleas around here tend to have, well, nothing. So I'm stuck on yard sales where I get to see N64's with $30 price tags. Meh.

Genesis, I rarely find anything Genesis at the used game chains here. Almost all my best finds were either at indie stores, or out of town.

This town is a Ghost Town when it comes to Dreamcast games too. And, like most people, I wish I could find more Turbografx games in the wild.

I like cheap n64 games IE less than $5

I dont find too many ;.

I would love to collect neo geo but finding that around here in the wild is impossible .

I have only seen 3 mvs units in my life in the wild and they were both in game stores

1 was in NYC at some game shop boxed for $1000.00 @_@

1 was at the mall in ocala for $1000.00 loose @_@ LOL

^^^ guy that owns the store says the tecmo super bowl goes for $60 on ebay all day long .

1 was at the 2nd rhino games store for $200 with 2 games when I was 16 and had no money . :/

I predominately focus on older systems like the 2600, Odyssey^2, ColecoVision and so on, but it seems that most of the early 80's stuff has dried up around my town. Pretty much all I find in the thrifts these days are the standard set of NES games, random Genesis sports games, and somewhat random SNES games... I've been working up a decent Genesis collection with the "off-target" finds I'm making, but it's sort of sad to see my 2600 collection at a stand-still.

Oh, and now that I'm trying to get into collecting Dreamcast, the games are of course nowhere to be found in the wild.... except for plenty of NFL 2K's

I want to collect R7s and above, but usually I only find R1-R6s.

But really, its hard to find saturn and sega cd games, and those have some games I want to play.

I'm mainly an Atari person. Finds for systems like the 2600 tend to come and go in cycles and I'm used to that. Aside from this I am very intrigued by the Virtual Boy. I've got two systems but only 3 games between them. VB titles are impossible to find in the wild in my part of the woods :frustrated:. The thrifts are barren of VB, and the 4 or so locally run game shops only have 1 copy each Mario Tennis :shameful:. There's simply not as much VB in my life as I'd prefer.

On the other hand, there's so much Genny stuff in the thrifts right now it's obscene.

I still haven't FOUND any thrift stores....

I've been checking out pawnshops, but they're all overpriced. They also really only carry newer stuff. I need to find little mom n pop thrifts, I'm in a bigass metro area (DC), so there HAVE to be some somewhere.....

I would love to actually find some TG16 and NGPC games in the wild. But If I actually did, a meteor would probably plunge into earth soon afterward.

me personally i try to buy whatever i find that is priced well which is why i have a large collection but not a ton of wicked raritys, ive only bought games off ebay once or twice, the only stuff i bought off ebay is games that i rember renting when i was a kid that i decided not to try to find and just to buck up and buy em like all the dizzy games, ooo i loveee dizzy hahahah but i tend to find lots of stuff that i like, i have found some neo geo at thrifts and i also have found a lot of tg16 stuff which i love

I collect only sega based systems at the moment but I do pick up other stuff if I find it reasonably. What I usually find the most are atari games. I used to never be able to find atari games, but last time I went thrifting alone, I found about 40 atari games at a saver's I already had, and then I found a bunch at goodwill (probably around 30 in a storage bin) that I mostly had except for a few, but they would sell the games seperate from the system (which was a 5200 compete with controllers and everything)....wanted 45 for it. I wish I found more decent genesis stuff. My boxes have been a huge help, I've been able to amass around 280 complete and good games. Now that they're running thin, it's been very difficult to find decent genesis games I don't already have.

Strangely enough my entire turbografx collection has been found in the wild....including my complete ys 1&2 and 3, and complete Air Zonk among other nice things ;D.

Well i am lucky enough to want alot of games and unlucky enough to want alot.

Sometimes i will see a game i really wanted and another game i really wanted then not be able to decide which to get.

But seeing as i go for all the systems i currently own (All of the major players in the console wars NES-today)

I try to stay away from preNES stuff for now because the quality i am able to get is terrible. I have also shut of purchases on incomplete games unless it is rare or i already have or know where to obtain a box and/or manual.

That being said, I started off wanting to get mostly DC stuff moved away from that to N64, to Genesis, to SNES, to NES. Lately i have been just picking up whatever i see at a good price and don't own when i actually get out.
Recently 5 DC games, before that some stuff from TRU, before that i think was my 20 CIB NES games, there were a few similair purchases of 15-20 CIB nes games for awhile before that.

But it is really whatever i find. I am not too picky about what i get yet. I don't have enough to worry about it.

I do try to seek out more uncommon titles when i see things that interest me but doesn't everyone? ;)
