There are a million racing games. And I'm just not that excited about driving a car or motorcycle or kart around a track anymore. But give me a boat, or an airplane, or something interesing like that, and I'd like to take it for a spin. For example, NGen Racing for the Playstation. Racing jet fighters--woo hoo!
What other racing games can you think of that took the "road" less travelled, so to speak?

You can't beat Diddy Kong Racing for variety since you race on ground, water, and in the sky. :)

Probably my favorite three... F-Zero, F-Zero X and F-Zero GX.
Seriously awesome games :)

All of these are pretty fun:
Hydro Thunder (arcade, N64, PSX, DC)
Wave Race 64 (N64)
Wave Race Blue Storm (Gamecube)
Splashdown: Rides Gone Wild (PS2)
And if snowmobiles count, check out Sled Storm on PSX.

I've got Hresvelgr for PS2 (J).
It sux, but it's the same idea along what you're thinking of.
In retrospect, I recall the first Extreme G as being a pretty damned good game.

1080 Avalanche (GCN - more of a Racing game than it was an Extreme Sports Snowboarding game)
Star Wars - Episode I: Racer (N64 / DC / GBC)
Star Wars: Super Bombad Racing (PS2)
Kirby's Air Ride (GCN)
Pokemon Dash (NDS)
Banjo Pilot (GBA)
Quantum RedShift (Xbox)
Speeder Bike and X-Wing 2 player Race in SWRSIII: Rebel Strike on GameCube
TONS of horse racing games, only one that comes to mind is Derby Stallion though.
I remember seeing some commercial for a first party PS2 game with these Big Metal Wild-Cat looking things running accross buildings... Think they had Tires though. Don't remember the name of the game (2001 I believe) oh well, someone will get it! Kineticha?

I'm going to have to second Hydro Thunder, for your system of choice. It brought good times back at the DC release. Another game I recommend is the Ace Combat Series. Ace Combat 4 and 5 are both the PS2 ones, and great combat sims.

Very yes on mention of Kirby Air Ride.
Sonic Adventure 2 (and hell, sonic 3) also has a nifty 2-player VS race mode, and a kart mode as well (not nearly as cool though).

Racing Aces (Sega CD) - you raced around in airplanes.
Carve (Xbox) - race around on jet skis, plus playable on Live

Definately not sims, they're just arcade styled games. They're fun though.

Hmm.
So far the cheapest used xbox game I have gotten from blockbuster is Mad Dash. ($3.99) Its an eidos game similar to Sonic R where you are running a race on foot. It's cute and high def and great for 8 year olds :)
I still like playing megarace on an old 486 computer. Along with stun runner..
