I recently went back and gave the Sega CD game some game time for a review I was writing, and the more I played, the more I began to really appreciate the series as a whole. Very complex and deep, with some great and bloody finishes! R.A.X. is dam man!

Any fans?

BTW: If anyone's interested, I'm having a salute to the series on my site that includes:

- Reviews for the Genesis and Sega CD games.
- An article as to what happened to the franchise (and that lost third chapter).
- An image gallery.
- And best of all, an interview with series creator Mike Latham!

Just click my sig and have some fun. :)

I play the Sega CD version from time to time. Flippin' hard, but a lot of fun.

I have some memories playing this game on Sega CD, but I dont have as memories as say Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter. I have only played it for about 1 hour at a store many years ago, but I havent forgot it since. This game is definitely entertaining, its just too fortunate not enough people like myself bought a Sega CD and played games like this.

Sadly, I've only played the Genesis game thus far, but it is bleeding awesome, even if it sets a new bar for fighting game AI cheapness. That Eternal Champion, I swear... what a butthole.

But it is an awesome game, with my three favorite characters being Xavier, Trident, and Blade. Larcen's design is also awesome, even if he is one of the trickier characters to play as. Soon, I intend on snagging a Sega CD and, along with it, EC: Challenge from the Dark Side.

Eternal Champions Rocks! I have the cartrige and CD version. This has to be one of the better fighting games....I think better than MK.

I am very suprised that it didnt get that much attention.

I have a random I-Mockery plug regarding that! http://www.i-mockery.com/shorts/hidden-character/default.php

THIS guy is one of the main reasons why I want a Sega CD. That Rebuttal move is priceless beyond compare. LOL

Ha ha, I hear that. I remember seeing some of the fatalities featured in the sega cd sequal in an old EGM issue I had. Man, you just got to love that godzilla finisher.

Umm.

Didn't the one female fighter, Raven, have a bit of inertial bounce to her well before DOA or any other fighting game?

Oh boy... you won't believe what his Vendetta finisher is. I read about it on an FAQ, and the Senator apparently goes postal. He literally morphs into a postman, whips out an Uzi, and goes to town on his unlucky opponent! THAT'S IT, I MUST HAVE A SEGA CD AND I MUST HAVE THIS GAME. Case closed, no debate, I'm getting one. PERIOD.

I have both versions but only played the genesis one. Messed around with sega cd very briefly. It's an excellent fighting game but just never really caught on. I liked a lot of the stages fatalities. The only ones I really remember were the drive by in the chicago stage and the prehistoric stage with the dinosaur. Pretty gory.

I enjoyed the Sega cd EC moreso then the genesis one. Coller music and variety of moves and the hidden fighters and some really brutal finishing moves.

Yes, the Senator does rock, especially his ICBM missle finisher.

Great job Melf. I just read the interview today that bit on the Sega Saturn one made me go :eek 2: it sounded like such a cool idea for a fighter too bad it got canned. As far as the games go I'm a big fan too even though I've only played the Genesis version.

Aw, man, Melf, I just looked over your website... awesome, awesome, awesome. If it's not already linked to the OPCFG, it more than likely will be soon. :D

Just one question, though: Where's the image gallery? Heh, I can't seem to find it. :embarrassed:

I don't care what the instructions say, Xavier is a damn wizard. Science my ass, some of those moves or pure witchcraft.

I don't think he's put it up yet. I think he's making it a week long tribute. By putting up something different each day. A good way to keep people coming back to the site.

EC on Sega CD was awesome. In college, we played it just about as much as MK or SF. I really liked the FMV fatalities, even though they were almost impossible to pull off.

My copy recently got stolen, along with SonicCD.

I will NEVER see copies of those again. *sigh*

Fun game, although it was annoying to have to wait for each char to complete their animation after you win and before you go to the next round.

I was the best with the hidden owl char... Hooter?

OH MY FREAKING GOD. Everyone, everyone, look what I just found! I typed in "cinekills" in Google, and the first choice was THIS...

http://www.whipassgaming.com/genesisreviews/eternalchamp_demo.htm

A library of GIFs regarding the fatalities from Eternal Champions: Challenge From the Dark Side. Gory and hilarious, just the way I'm sure you all like it. I really cracked up with Midknight's stage Overkill. That REALLY is Overkill there. BEST PIT FATALITY EVER. Sorry, Mortal Kombat, but nothing can beat what I just saw. :D

Oh, and I just saw Blade's Cinekill and laughed out loud. If that's not the greatest imitation of the "CRUSH" guy from Kids in the Hall, I'll eat my hat.

Hey, I checked them all out because I don't have a Sega CD yet. LOL

Anyway, I forgot to mention something: I finally beat the Eternal Champion on the Genesis game!! I devised an ungodly cheap corner-throwing strategy that would get me a mark of dishonor in a two-player game, but as far as I'm concerned, in the one-player mode, anything goes. I did it with Trident, but it can probably be done with all characters. Basically, just throw an opponent in the corner, stay right there, as soon as they get up, throw them again. I know, I know, that would get me booed and hissed in a fighting game that isn't EC, but hey, I beat the Eternal Champion, so......... whoot. :D

Of course, you know that the game plays adequately under Gens, right? (It is also yet another fine game available at Home of the Underdogs. HOTU also has the Eternal Champions gamebooks, which you can read about at http://www.gamebooks.org/show_series.php?id=142 .)

Oh man, we loved EC way more than we loved MK! We could actually pull off some of the finishing moves in EC, but we never could pull off any of them in MK. You'd think that it would've been the opposite, since we'd always just mash the buttons like crazy and hope for the best, but that wasn't the case. So we played alot more EC than anything else, except we played alot of Weaponlord too. Those were our two favorite fighting games on Genesis.

Anyway, I own both games, and after reading the story about what EC3 was gonna be like, I'm just sick. That game would've ruled over all other 2D fighting games ever made! In a way, it's no wonder that the SOB's at SOJ killed it. They knew that it was gonna be the 2D fighting game to end all 2D fighting games, and sucky-ass Virtua Fighter would've been left twisting all its 3D polys in the dust here. They were very stupid for cancelling it though. If that game had actually launched with the Saturn, or if it had been released shortly thereafter, Saturns would've sold like hotcakes here, and everybody would've had to have one. The Saturn might still be holding it's own against the PS1, and the Dreamcast might still be holding it's own against the PS2.

Well, maybe not, but you know that EC3 would've sold systems like crazy! It would've become one of the pack-ins, and everybody that was into fighting games would've bought a Saturn just to play that game. SOJ were total idiots. Instead of doing the one thing that would've saved them here, they did the one thing that guaranteed the Saturn would never be a success. Everybody knows that Virtua Fighter was no match for Tekken, or even Toshinden, and by the time Soul Blade came it, nobody was gonna buy a Saturn for any crap like Virtua Fighter, Fighting Vipers, and Last Bronx, when they could get 3D fighting games that blew all of those away on the PS! Sega's 3D fighters were very good, but they were just no match for Sony's fighters, or rather all the 3rd party fighters that were made for the PS. Just look at Dynasty Warriors, even that game blew everything on Saturn away!

So I'm just sitting here almost crying, dreaming about playing the greatest 2D fighter ever made, and the best game in the whole EC series. I mean holy shit, if SOJ hadn't cancelled EC3 for the Saturn, then you you know that there would've been an EC4 for the Dreamcast! Just imagine that! It would've been a great question to ask Mr. Latham. Would he have made EC4 for the Dreamcast? And why didn't he make EC3 for the Dreamcast? That's one thing that I have never understood about game designers. They get all pissed off because their games get cancelled, and then they just give up on them. What the hell is stopping them from doing it now? Why can't they just make it for another system? Why do they always just say oh well, it sure would've been cool, but it's too late now. I really don't get it. I mean I do get it in a way, but it's just so stupid! If it's really that important to you, then just make the damned game! Who cares if it sells well or not? I know that's not the way the industry works, but sheesh, there's so many totally awesome ideas like that just going to waste because they won't just do it!

No other EC game came out because the original development team disbanded and both Latham and Van left Sega. It's a shame too, as it really would have kicked ass in the U.S.

A GREAT series of E.C. articles! Kudos! The Sega CD version was fantastic and still holds up well.

An error I spotted, by the way:

"Sega's eventual decision to farm out the development of Virtua Fighter 4 on the Dreamcast is proof of this. "
==> VF3, of course you meant to write.

Also I think you called Tom Kalinske, "Mike Kalinske" in the interview part. FYI!
