GameDaily pointed us to the fact that two television news magazines have videogame features on tap:
Last night's episode of Dateline on NBC featured a hidden camera investigation investigating retailer compliance with ESRB videogame ratings; specifically focusing on sales of (Mature) rated games. Dateline aired at 10:00 PM ET.
DID ANYONE SEE THIS?
60 Minutes II, airing tonight (Wednesday the 18th) on CBS at 8:00 PM ET, contains a segment entitled Sex, Lies and Videogames with Bob Simon reporting on the growing adult gamer population and the games targeted towards them.

Retailer compliance with the ESRB? Oh you just KNOW that the undercover team is going to go to the stores that don't restrict and it's going to be plastered on the news how evil stores are for selling such filth. Where was the media when R rated movies became more available on store shelves? Where were the "stings" then?
Gotta love the news, eh?

I saw the Dateline report last night. The part about ESRB compliance within big-name chains was okay, but the intro to it all bugged me. Of course, they HAD to fucking interview Senator Joseph Lieberman (who led a Senate hearing about violence in videogames in the early 90s, back in the days of Mortal Kombat). The tone of the intro was once more of the "where is this world coming to with all these filthy games" rather than consider the fact that the industry is growing up and reaching out to a wider demographic than ever before. As a result, the report doesn't suggest any solution that'd put that reality into consideration. Instead, videogames are once again viewed as a kids' medium that corrupt today's youth.

I hate even thinking about this. It is so one side or the other that it's like debating abortion. It just pisses me off.

I saw the Dateline ep. Drivel. My favorite part was the beginning...the narrator is describing the acts of violence in GTA3, in such a serious tone of voice you'd think he was describing REAL violence. Lieberman is a ninny. Doesn't that guy have better things to do? Didn't they already go through this with comic books in the 50s? Remember the ruckus about cartoon violence in the 80s? Enough already.

A few weeks ago, I saw on the news a story about two "teenagers" that stole over a hundred cars because of GTA. Please. These "teenagers" were 18 and 19 year olds, and though technically teenagers, they are also adults! Unless they are mentally deficient, which is highly unlikely if they are able to steal a 100 cards, they know the difference between right and wrong. Blaming video games, blaming the media, is just a scapegoat so they don't serve as much jail time, and they get public opinion and big name lawyers on their side. And then people, like my father, think all games are like GTA. Umm, what about the rating system? I get carded every single time I buy a game! It's just funny how the media called these two grown men "teenagers" like they don't know any better than to steal cars, and when those sailors raped that 12 year old Japanese girl a few years ago, they called the girl a "woman".

Lieberman's gotten frighteningly power hungry lately. He's no longer content to just bash video games, although he'll still jump at the chance to do it. He's pouring the fire and brimstone on Trent Lott and doing whatever else is necessary to stay in the public spotlight. He's a dangerous man, people... dangerous to us, at least. There's a reason he looks just like Senator Palpatine... he'll ACT just like him if he's ever elected president.
Fortunately, I'll be there to stop him and his nerdy sidekick with the help of a chubby dogman, a spoiled princess, and a shiny gold robot who looks suspiciously like a popular 80's celebrity. Oh wait, wrong movie.

P.S. MankeyMan's comments just gave me an idea for a signature file... "Nine out of ten Jews agree... Lieberman is a dumbass!"

I missed most of it but NBC covered the gaming situation last night as their final story on their nightly news program. It appeared to be more of the same...don't know if it was the same story, a follow-up or what.

If Leiberman runs, there is no way the democrats are gonna win. It's just plain and simple.
