Usually when I go into a pawn shop or flea market or any store with video games I tend to never bring my checklist into the store because im worried about someone giving me a hardtime or crazy looks I donno. Well this pawn shop I just found out about that ive stoped at 3 times has A LOT of nes, genesis, super nintendo. And a nice selection of dreamcast playstation and saturn. And even a handfull of game gear and jaguar games. But it is a lot there is at least 75-100 unique titles for nes, genesis and snes probally about the same for PS1 and dreamcast. And there were proablly like 30 or 40 unique saturn titles and about 10 to 15 game gear and or jaguar games. So since I found this GOLDMINE I decided to bring in my DP guide (well not the guide i havent gotten around to buying it but i have the complete lists for nes, snes, genesis, and dreamcast printed out and stapled together) to see if there was anything rare. Well I went threw the Genesis and nes bins and started looking threw the snes bin then the guy said "i dont want people using price guides its bad for bussiness." and he said id have to put it in my car or leave it at the counter untill I was finished. So I just agreed didnt argue and apoligized and took the guide to my car. Then I came back in and spent a good hour mineing for gold. I ended up buying a bunch of games then when I went to the counter the owner said something like so you picked out the hard-to-find titles i should raise the price. But he just rung me up and stuff and i went home and laughed the whole way home.

So when I first came in everything was going alright then I was told I couldnt use a priceguide because its "bad for bussiness" so I was pissed a little bit but it ended up turned out wonderfull. But this is def my best haul of 2005 and the most videogames ive picked up at once but I just started working 2 almost full time jobs and i dont have to pay any bills except car insurance so I decided to go balls-to-the-wall. I think towards the end of this week im going to finally invest in a decent digital camera then im going to take pictures of the haul and post em' here. :)

Well, I'm not surprised he wouldn't let you use the guide you had but what can ya do? People get like that, especially ones that work in pawn shops. Sounds like an awesome pawn shop ;D. In fact I like pawn shops a lot, considering I've found a quadrun and stadium events at two different ones for 5 each. Good times.

Congrats on the find. I think that guy was being an ass by telling you it would be bad for business. I'm not exactly sure how that is possible. Oh well. Anyways, you could just find another case for the Panzer Dragoon Saga in better condition and switch it out. I have two Saga's that I've found in the wild, and I've done the exact same thing. By the way, how much did you pay for each game? We DP'ers are always interested in prices :D

When the owner said id have to put it in my car or leave it at the counter i just said alright im sorry and took it to my car i figured theres no use in argueing with him because he's the man with the plan (and pawn shop). Anyway the prices were:
Genesis $3/4
Snes $4/7
Nes $1/3
Dc $8/10
Sat $8/10

The price before the slash was without a box or in a jewel case. The number after the slash was if it even A. had a instruction manual or B. the box. The total price only came out to about 150 which i thought was pretty cool for so many kickass games with 3 or 4 R7-8s in there. Plus Panzer Dragoon Saga. But I was excited the most about The Lord of the Rings game for SNES because ive wanted it for a while but couldnt find it in the wild.

Holy crap I need to go look at pawn shops :eek 2:

I haven't tried any pawn shops yet. I know there are a lot of them in my area. I guess I need to go check them out.

Great haul!

DAMN! Sick ass deals man! I only wish stuff like this would happen to me, but it seems it never does. Awesome deals on Fun N' Games and PDS. I only wonder what the store owner would say if he actually knew what he had. LOL

I'd think that even worse for his business would be running potential customers off before they get a chance to give him some green. What a douche. I'd have just simply told him that they were checklists, you were trying to get complete collections and you were just trying to avoid duplicates. Even a nascar fan like himself could probably understand that, what with his collection of die-cast cars and #3 cookie jars.

Make a list of all the Rare and Games which are worth alot in excel, and print it on a piece of paper in size 8 font. That way you have 2 sides of one sheet of paper easily concealed. A PDA work nicely too, albeit more expensive.

I think you did well not to argue with him, even if his policy is a little wacky. He DOES own/run the shop, so what else could you do? I think it would have been very unlikely you could have convinced him to change his mind. Nice to hear of someone being respectful :) And it worked out best for you in the end anyway, as you still got some great deals! Congrats all around.

Cool find, but what an ass. I have the lists on an old Palm pilot, and if anyone asks I just say, "with as many games as I have, I'd hate to buy a duplicate."

Some nice finds there! And pretty decent for $150 for all the games, it was well worth the price you paid. I can understand, in some ways, why the guy was a dick about the price guide. A pawn shop is in an interesting position - they are not a game store, so they can't charge top dollar for games because ordinary people just won't pay that kind of money. Even super rare games - well, regular Joe's don't know that they are rare so you could have games sitting on the shelf for months and months. So he has to price them reasonably and he knows (and he knows that YOU know, if you get what I mean) that you got a great deal.

That is quite a sweet haul! It makes me want to check out the small grouping of pawns around here. I don't usually find anything really noteworthy but now I have a bit more hope...

I gotta agree here, it's not like HE knew what games were rare and it's not like someone else was gonna come in and give him more money for them than what he already was asking.

I'd have been hard pressed to say "I got money, I got a list, me and my list don't seperate....the choice is yours". But I'd have probably just backed down like you did. LOL

Coming from someone that runs a game store online...

That's the weirdest thing I've ever heard of. You're purchasing games from them. They're selling the games at the prices they have marked. That means they are selling games and getting money that they otherwise wouldn't, and you're adding to your collection...

There are a bunch of stores in Milwaukee that I frequent for things, and almost all of them know that I buy half the games for my collection and half to resell online. A few of the independant places even give me a _discount_ once in a while because I purchase a few thousand dollars of stuff from their store and if they can get me to spend more there, they make more money.

That guys a tard. I'm sorry, but collectors are _good_ for stores. Ugh...

i recently printed lists of NES, SNES and GEN games R6 and up for the times i go into the last remaining gamestops that still sell those games. if it wasnt for the guides i wouldnt have found Super Solitaire, Math Blaster Episode 1, and Miracle Piano (all SNES). those are games that wouldnt sell unless someone actullay knew the rarity. guides like this actually help stores move material that would normally be sitting there collecting dust.

anyways, dont comicbook stores and other places that sell collectibles allow this stuff anyways (i know it was a pawn shop but it still sould a form of collectible)

You'd think that if he has a policy like that it'd be worth his time to go through and properly price the games....then just ebay the ones that are high-value and leave everything else in stock.

All the pawn shops around here only have newer stuff, Xbox/PS2/GCN/GBA/N64.

It's hard to find anything rare or remarkable, and it's all overpriced.

I hate pawn shops. All they do is fence stolen goods and take advantage of desparate people.

The reason the owners give people who come in looking for games is they are not in the business of selling games. Or selling CDs or tapes or videos. They just sell that stuff to stay legit.

I don't care what they're selling for what price, you'll never see me step foot in one of those places again.

Those are the exact reasons I go to pawns. I get the best stuff because it's either stolen or someone desparate sold it for a few bucks to pay bills. That's why they have the kick ass finds ;)

Sounds good to me...so how about letting me know where these pawn shops are, cause I certainly can't find them in our area.

There's a few in my area, but I wish there was more. I buy CDs there, hardly ever do I buy NES games...always over priced, asking $5-7 a pop.

Pawn shop guys are just like that...assholes. They pretty much always are, but that's what their job is...rip people off. "Yeah, I'll give you $20 for this 27" tv".

Nice finds tho, most of the pawns in my area are all this generation only stuff.

All pawn shops use Ebay to help price their stuff nowdays but he wouldn't let you use your list? What a fucking hypocrite.

What I don't understand is why some of the people that run pawn shops or other seconhand stores, trying to make a profit off of video games don't research a little bit for themselves. Just because he's too lazy to find his own price guide and price them accordingly, he says you can't bring yours in. But then if everyone who ran a pawn shop did their homework, then we all wouldn't have our great finds. ;)

Maybe they do, but the people selling the stuff CAN say they don't want to take what they are offering.

But yeah, I don't care if it's stolen, or bought from a man to pay his bills...I'll still spend my money there!

Camden. Still want to go? :)

Actually, the places around here I am thinking of aren't exactly pawn shops....you can't go in and borrow fifty bucks and leave your stereo there (at least they don't advertise it). But all of the above apply to various not-exactly legitimate businesses in our general vacinity. I won't name names on the internet because of their obvious criminal connections, but it'll make for a good story on our next road trip.

Wow I didnt realize how many people posted bitching about pawn shop owners. But when he said it was bad for bussiness I was pissed because there were a bunch of games and out of all the pawn shops ive been to this one had the most games so i was like "oh crap" and grabed the DP guide and went in. But I figure there is no point in argueing with the owner I mean he has the write to be like "well get out of my store if you dont like the rules" So i just argeed took it to the car then rumaged and found all that stuff. And whenever/If I ever get around to buying a digital camera ill be sure to post the pics because I think its one of my very few hauls that is worthy of pictures.

Well you certainly have alot more self restraint than me. Because I would've told him off. He runs a pawn shop. He should know what they're worth. If he doesn't, then he should learn. If he's too lazy to do that, then it's not my problem. And I would've called him on his comment that he should mark the prices up on what I picked out too. He already priced them. That's the price.

What a total jerk. If he really thinks that he has something that valuable in them, then he should get off his lazy fat ass, look up their values himself and reprice them accordingly. Otherwise, shut the fuck up. You care that much about it? Get off your ass. Don't wanna get off your ass? Shut the fuck up. And he'd better hope he didn't try to refuse to sell any of them to me too.

And just to really piss him off, I would've made him explain to me word for word exactly how my collector's price guide is bad for his extortion business. He makes a living paying people way less than what their stuff is worth just so he can sell it for way more than what he paid them for it, and they were obviously desperate for cash, or they wouldn't have come to him to get raped.

I would've told him that too. Get your ass the hell out of my face with all that bullshit, bitch. I would've been thrown out of that store and banned from ever coming back there again within mere seconds of his ass saying that shit to me. I don't put up with that kind of bullshit out of anybody, and especially not some asshole who presumably wants some of my money.
