You know, there are times when Google ISN'T the best answer.
This is one of those times. The guy is asking most likely because he wants our personal opinion, first-hand accounts, and possibly has follow-up questions once he has a small list to work from.

Are you looking for a Plug Mod, or a real one with which you can just boot your burns right up?
Old larger PS1s can use the plug mod, which probably isn't what you are looking for, since you need to swap CDs...
The new PSOne model that I have has this chip in it:

From chipzone.com. It's $12.97, and I haven't had a game not work yet. (I actually ordered a pre-modded new psone from them).

I personnally use a Cheat Cartiridge as it saves modifiying the console.
With these all you need to do is place in a original game, once the disc stops spinning, swap the disc over, and select Start game and it should work fine!
Dont forget as well this gives you access to gameshark/action replay codes which can be a good bonus! (Especially for exploring the FF7 Debug room, but thats a whole different topic!)
Here is one on ebay:

But to make sure this works, you will need to have a PSX Model with a Parralel I/O port on the back of it! (Usually hidden by a flap!)
Good luck!

If it is the one with the port in the back, you may want to check out EBGames in the used playstation memory cards section. I saw a game enhancer there for 3 bucks.

I can vouch for ChipZone, I've ordered many chips from them over the past few years and they're always pleasant to deal with.

Stealth 5
Yeah, you definitely want to get some type of stealth chip installed, because most (All?) later releases had some form of mod-chip protection on them. I don't actually know what game it all started with, but I do know both Strider 2 and Final Fantasy 8 had a mod lock put on them.
