My buddy just bought a classic Williams "Black Night" pinball machine. It plays great so far but the voice doesn't seem to be working. From what I've read, it sounds like the voice option is probably turned off via the dip switch settings.

We've looked all over the machine for the dip switches but couldn't find them. Does anyone know where they are usually located in a pinball machine?

Duhh, I didn't realize we had an Arcade Alley forum. I'm gonna post this there. Sorry.

I have a Black Knight but have never changed the dip switch settings so I am going by other Williams machines I have opened.

Unlock the backbox - if you don't have the key you must very carefully drill the lock out so you can open the head.

Next lift the front glass up and out - very carefully and sit it in a safe place on its edge. Do not lay it flat. The glass is tempered and a good whack from anything can cause it to break. Usually it is not a problem with this glass but this stuff is old.

Now you should see a piece of wood with all the lights that light up the glass. On the right hand side as you face where the glass was, there is a metal lift up style catch. Pull up on that and swing the wood away on the hinges.

There are all the boards. The dipswitches are on one of them - most likely the largest board in the center. I don't have my manual here but the switch settings should be easily found online if you need them. If you can't find them, PM me and I'll see about getting them sent to you.

As for re-assembly, just reverse the steps but make sure when you put the glass in the top goes in first then angle the glass back into the original slot and be sure it is in there straight and flat before trying to lock the head box.

yeah thats what I was goining to say .

They are usually behind the back glass.

I use to have a pinball machine .

tip of the day : never stick finger on a bumper because it hurts if there is not a rubber there. :P
