My buddy just bought a classic Williams "Black Night" pinball machine. It plays great so far but the voice doesn't seem to be working. From what I've read, it sounds like the voice option is probably turned off via the dip switch settings.

We've looked all over the machine, inside & out, for the dip switches but couldn't find them. Does anyone know where they are usually located in a pinball machine?

My money's on it being on the motherboard located in the backbox.

Ahhh, the backbox! We didn't think to look there because I assumed all the major boards and whatnot were located underneath the playfield. We'll give that a try.

Cool, didn't want to post the obvious and come across as some snot but figured it didn't hurt to mention it. See those giant capacitors bigger than your thumb in there? Tell your buddy he should cut the machine on at least once a month to keep them from retaining moisture and giving out.

Under the playfield tends to be the mechanical bits, plungers, solenoids for flippers, etc.

Oops didn't notice the thread here - check the thread in tech for detailed instruction for getting into the head box if you need them.

How much did he pay for that? (If you don't mind me asking)

He bought it from his brother for $700. Not a bad deal since I see them sell on ebay for around $1,000. It's in pretty good shape but it could use some light restoration work. The Black Knight image on the backglass is flaking off, drop targets could use new decals, legs & coin door could use some polishing.

Another thing we can't figure out is the bonus ball. It looks like you're always supposed to get a 30 second bonus ball at the end of the game, but we're getting 3 (like a multiball) instead. I figure this has something to do with the dip settings as well?
