A strange request I know, but i have hunted all day and night to find a picture of a UK PAL SNES which has some very prominent yellowing, but all to no avail.

So I have come here, to ask the good people of the DP forums to help me in my quest.

So does anyone have a pic, or could take a pic of thier own SNES for me?

It has to be YELLOWED and UK PAL.

Regards
Simon

Im actually writing an article on cleaning, and part of it is talking about general yellowing of comptuers and consoles.

I wanted the picture to illustrate this.

oooh nice one, i cant wait to read that, is there any known cure for yellowing then apart from sanding off a layer or something?

Yeah there's a cure for it, just make all videogame consoles black like they should be in the first place, and you'll never have to worry about yellowing!

I honestly don't know what possesses manufacturers to make white or gray videogame consoles. No matter what, they all eventually look like yellow shit.

a few reasons i guess, but Smokers are the main cause of them i think, in a smoking house hold most consoles turn yellow and stink!

Wrong , it is the plastic and has nothing to do with Smoke.

Nintendo started using 2 different plastics on the Snes . And one of them turns yellow after a while no matter WHAT you do.

It is a breakdown of the plastic and not from Smoke, or Sunlight or Aliens.

It turns out (after a lot of research) that it is the reaction caused by the effects of Ultra violet light on a part of teh material that the plastic was made from, that make the plastic turn yellow, and as a result is irreversable.

That's funny. I didn't even think UK SNES's yellowed.

Does anybody know how long it takes? I have a few SNES carts that are falling victim to this phenomenon, but fortunately my SNES still looks new. I hope that never changes. It sucks that some of my carts are turning, but they're just carts, so it's not really that big a deal. But I want my console to stay looking nice and new, since it draws alot more attention than my carts. My carts are kept in boxes, so they're only seen whenever I'm playing them.

It does not matter how long it takes, after all there is nothing you can do about it.

So it's UV rays that cause the yellowing, huh? Where does that come from? I know sunlight has it, but do normal light bulbs in rooms of houses generate UV rays?

UV rays are everywhere..... you can't hide from them.... I even wear an aluminum foil hat and they still get into my head......

They're EVERYWHERE I say !!!!!!!!!!!

No, but it only takes one little ray to start the process off :-(

I asked about what generates UV rays because it seems the plastic assorbs the rays and yellow at different rates. Mine was in active use daily for over 10 years and when I finally packed it up in 2002 it was only a little yellow in some spots. Others I have seen have gone TOTALLY yellow in half that time.

And when did Nintendo switch over to the 'non yellowing' plastic? Did the 'yellow' problem only affect the first run? Mine dates from December of 1991, probaly made a few months before that.

Now that I have not been able to find out. Althought it would be interesting to know. I have spent around 5 days on this and have still to find out certain things.

Maybe only Nintendo know?

Does anyone have an SNES (or Super Fami) made in 1991 that shows signs of yellowing?

My girlfriends SNES and the SNES shell i have sitting around both say "1991" on them and neither one of them shows any signs of yellowing.

Mine has a copyright of 1991, and it's not yellowed.

So based on what we have so far 1991 is a year on little or no yellowing of systems.

So it seems that some point after 1991 Nintendo switched to the nasty plastic that yellows over time.

I pre-ordered my PAL SNES before launch and it's still MINT. No yellowing. Anyone mistreating a snes/sfc should be thrown in jail! :)

As I said, I got mine in December of 1991 and it has yellowed slightly in some parts.

Well, I just checked my other one, and it had a copyright of 1991, and it was severly yellowed.
