Those are out of my collection. I picked em up at a flea market in the summer. What I find to be funny is that one the back they have screenshots from Halo, and other current gen. games. And no, no famiclones are legal. As for the mold.... yes they are legal.

The xboy is a knock off of xbox, looks like it to. Has the huge x and then ridges on the rest of it. Pretty small though. The other one is a knock off of PS2 which is also really small, but is alot like the PStwo. There both NES famiclones.

EDIT- The flea Market is only open during the spring and summer, no games just a few Famiclones and sometimes some new stuff. It's out towards Queens. ANd I paid $25 a piece.

how are familcones illegal? if there are pirated games, then of course, but as for the hardware, the NES-on-a-chip is reverse engineered and used in Jakk's TV Games, the Atari Flashback, and other legal products

I saw it on a guy's private site for £24 (before shipping). And that shipping is going to be a lot for those not in England or Europe.

Becayse those plug and plays and the flashback had the permission (or rights, something like that) to use those games. Either way the company who owns the games gets a percantage of the profit. The famiclones are pirates. Are you allowed to make bootleg DVD's and then keep all the profits for yourself? Point proven.

Yea just because you reverse engineer something doesn't mean you can the manufacture and sell it.

i know that, and in fact i said that software was illegal, but there are familcones out there that do not come with games, they just play famicom carts and NES carts with a convertor. those are perfectly legal

No, but it's perfectly legal for you to make your own DVD player, which is basically what these are: just the players, made from every day off-the-shelf electronic components. You can make your own FamiClone by taking a few trips to RadioShack and allelectronics.com. The molds don't sound legal to me though, which was one aspect of Nintendo's seizing of the PowerJoys - they were rip-offs of the N64 controller, not to mention contained 100s of ROMs.

Yes, but the DMCA makes it illegal for you to reverse engineer the decryption code for that DVD player now... So you can legally make your own DVD player and your own DVDs, but you can't make it play others...

I'd love to see a famiclone with no ROMs fight in court, as it would clear up a lot of questions that I have over just how much power the DMCA really puts into the hands of companies like Nintendo. Currently, all of the rulings (such as the illegal-ness of reverse engineering DVD encryption), have gone to the companies. Sadly, that's probably where they will all continue to go.

Also, when I see the SP2, I keep thinking about Windows XP ;)

Am I wrong in assuming the patents on the Famicom have expired? Wouldn't that make it legal to produce a clone? There's an awful lot of Neo-Fami's on eBay for them to be illegal.

there have been no legal challenges to Jakk's TV Games, the Atari Flashback, the Intellivision handhelds and other all-in-ones. The architecture is no different on the inside of these from any famiclone.

That was actually going to be my next post. They stopped selling the Famicoms in Japan, what, like 4 years ago? If I'm not mistaken, the right to the electronics does not hold up since the company has stopped supporting the product.

Regardless, Nintendo has shown no interest in thwarting these companies, other than the PowerJoys and SuperJoys that actually contained ROMs and their designs ripped off the N64 controllers to a T (If you read any articles on that subject, those are the only 2 reasons Nintendo gives for going after the sellers of those Famcioms-in-a-controller)

In addition, one company in particular, YoBo Gameware, is a legitimate company that makes third party accessories. We purchase all of our new accessories from them, and they actually make the NeoFamis. A legitimate company would never take a risk if it meant losing everything. They employ lawyers and researchers to find out if they can do stuff like that. We used to mod Playstations and PS2s, but the lawyer we employ advised us against it after Sony's court cases with modchip producers -- and we're a small local gamestore -- I can imagine a multinational corporation would take similar steps.

Its a famiclone and not that big of a deal. The ps2 famiclone has been around since after the released of the ps2. What I want to see is a better shot of the penguin famiclone. Also if you really want a famiclone just get one that looks like a famicom since those usually work the best.l

One question: On those PS2 and XBox famiclones, where do the cartridges go?

The PS2 one is awsome, it is exactly like a PS2, were the cd tray would come out it fold in, and the cart goes in there. It's really cool. The xbox 'X' flips up and the cart goes in there.
