Well I snagged one of these last night and searched the forums and Google but couldn't find much info about it. So I thought I would share my information in case anyone else here picks one up. Please forgive the blurry pics as my camera doesn't do to well up close.

I would guess the whole thing weighs in at about 40 pounds. The outer shell is completely metal except for the controller holders on each side which are plastic.

The unit is capable of holding 16 card games, 16 cart games, or a combanation of each.
http://img160.exs.cx/img160/4911/cartslots6pt.th.jpg (http://img160.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img160&image=cartslots6pt.jpg)

Determining the cart order on the inside in conjunction to the front display took a moment. Where the front display is setup like a book(left to right), the slot order on the inside is reversed(right to left).

http://img239.exs.cx/img239/5122/cartslots7fb.th.jpg (http://img239.exs.cx/my.php?loc=img239&image=cartslots7fb.jpg)

The majority of the carts and cards did not have their labels on the front. At first I thought the glue had deteriorated over time and the labels were lost. But when I looked at the carts more closely I discovered they were never labled to begin with. Also each one has a unique label on the back of it regardless if it has a front label or not.

Now one of the biggest (and best) differences between this unit and a standard SMS is the multiple controller ports. Which allow you to have at least two controllers and a gun plugged in at the same time. There are 4 ports total:
Port 1 - Controller 1
Port 2 - Gun 1
Port 3 - Controller 2
Port 4 - Gun 2 ???
I haven't been able to figure out port 4's function yet as I only have 1 gun.

When I got this unit it was set to reset itself after one minute of play. Pretty annoying when you're trying to play. So after looking around the board for a minute I saw a small set of dip switchs. They were all on the number side (downside) of the switch so I reveresed each of their settings (upside) and now I have unlimited game time. :)

Finally, we come to the back of the unit. Mine didn't come with a power cord but it just uses a plain old pc power cord. It has a big rocker switch for the power switch and the standard A/F and A/V ports that the SMS has. There is also a channel selector. Now two big differences is that there is a power inlet next to the power outlet that will let you plug your TV power cord into the SMS unit. Also there are two knobs above the power outlet that contain fuses in them. If you find one that won't power on check the fuses and make sure they're still good.

Well class that concludes today's lesson. Now go play!

Cool.

That is so much more of a unit than my puny little Sega Demo System SD-16

Nice fuggin' score! :) Would it be cheeky to ask how much you paid?

There's actually 2 slightly different models of this unit - yours, with the 16 card slots, and another with just 3 card slots (but 16 cart slots still). Seeing as there's only 10 Western card games, 16 does seem like overkill. :)

I know [orignal SMS guru] Bock has at least one of these, so you can probably find some more details in the SMS Power forums. (smspower.org/forums/)

Shit! IIRC, the last one on eBay went for something like $400!

Mine does, too. And I've seen another one in a another dentist's office. Actually, I think about 80% of all Genesis demo unit are now planted in dentists offices.

Anyways, back on topic: So, you ended up grabbing it? That's cool! They're pretty big, too. Here's a picture of two demo units side by side compared to a regular SMS unit:

I've got one too - it's been at the CGE Museum for the last three years. Really nice model, when I had it at home I plunked a 25" TV on top of it. SMS bliss.

Nice find and have fun with it!

This has officially become my SMS system of choice for two reasons:

1. 4 controller ports. No need to plug and unplug when switching from controller to gun and vice versa.

2. When you're not playing this machine will randomly cycle through the opening demos of each game. I just like having it on for the background noise when I'm at the computer. Weird I know. LOL

@ anagrama
Thanks for the link! I will have to check them out.

@ Gapporin
Thanks for the pic of those 2 units. Yeah these suckers are hugh. It won't be going on my console shelf anytime soon. LOL
Also in the pic the unit on the right has the exact same game list as mine. I wonder if Sega ever sent out different games with the matching marquees so stores could swap out games. :hmm:
