I have not made a website in an awfuly long time and would like to make a website that actualy draws traffic, so I want to make a database collecting as many links to websites with specific categories such as sites based on systems, game genres, specific games, and anything else.
Here are my questions, what is the best free host to sign up with? I used to use geocities but it seems they are using more annoying ads now. Know of any good ones? Also incase the site ever goes anywhere what is a good website to buy a domain name at?
I just got photoshop too so this will be a good opportunity for me to play around with it :)

I have a question for you. Not to be a smartass, but what advantage would this have over using a regular search engine like Google or Yahoo? Unless I'm misunderstanding your idea, it sounds to me like you're trying to re-invent the wheel.

simply because I dont care about google and I want to have some fun designing a website. Plus I would feature the sites that are not say on the first 3 pages of google which is usualy plauged with gamespot and such.
Thats like asking whats the point of making another final fantasy fansite, because its fun.

so what? like I said I'm doing this for fun and will search the web and find sites not listed on the DP link page and email the webmaster and ask if he wants to be added.

But a links page? Won't that require constant updating and maintenance and inevitably end up in an advanced state of decay? At least with a fansite you have a chance of producing unique content that will stand the test of time.

I can't answer your questions, but it sounds like you want to build a hub site, which is the sort of thing a search engine like Teoma would find relevent. If you want to draw traffic, you might want to do a little research into how they calculate "authority."
