I recently bought a bunch of Sega Saturn crap from my friend for $20. The Saturn was in Japanese, and came with several disc only games, some of which were US. Oddly enough, when I tried playing the US games (with the odd cart plugged in), the games would not boot, or I can't read Japanese and didn't go to the right menu. I'm just trying to figure if this actually boots up US games, because he was somehow able to play them.

What in the world is it doing in a Japanese MegaDrive cartridge?

Well, the bottom has those two chips that are like those of other Saturn backup carts.

It is indeed a region converter. I have got the exact same one myself.
The story behind it is that the company that made them had a stack of left over mega drive cases becuase they used to make the exact same product for the Mega CD. So they just decided to use them for the saturn

Thanks for the info! So how do I get this thing working? My Japanese Saturn just takes me to the screen with all of the options to tell me that the US game is not reading.

Probably only for playing Jp games on US systems.

I bought a US system today, and it doesn't work that way either. Maybe the cart is messed up? Someone help me... :(

Intriguing piece of hardware there. I recently aquired a Sega CD and have been pouring over Sega CD FAQs and ran across this piece of info. Link (http://www.angelfire.com/ny/dezmoowu/Sega/Import.txt)
CD+Plus
This cartridge looks like a regular Genesis cartridge and has better
success with compatibility than its predecessors. When the Sega CD
is powered up with this cart in place, it's possible to run the
Sega CD via the options screen (select "CD-ROM"). The reset
button does NOT open the Sega CD tray (first model), you have to
do that via the options screen as well.
CD+PLUS does not work with the 32X installed.
Japanese CDs known to work successfully with CD+PLUS:
AlShark
Burai
F-1 Circus CD
Final Fight CD
Heavenly Symphony
Lunar
Prince of Persia
Sega Classics Arcade Collection (4-in-1)
Silky Lip
Silpheed
Sol Feace
Super League CD
Tenkafubu
Thunder Storm
Is it possible that it's a mislabeled Genesis/Sega CD import adapter?

Thanks for info, that's possible. Thing is, I don't understand how it can perfectly fit in the Saturn, or how my friend played American games on a non-modded, non-cartridge'd Saturn.

American games on a non-modded Saturn.
hmm id love to help you here, but the only advice i can give you is the Mod Chips have no0thign to do with the region (as i recently found out)
The Mod CHips only make the saturn remove the copy protection...
therefore your cart has to be for the region somehow.. let us know if u get it working...

My friend said I have to hold down some buttons for it, but I don't know which buttons. He doesn't know either. But this brought up one step closer to figuring it out?
Also, is there really a swap trick to the Saturn?

Are you sure the cartridge port is clean?
When there's a game in and the cart is plugged in there should be a CD+ text after the second Sega logo. It should then go to the main menu and after a while the cursor moves on the Start Application button (upper left corner). Press C and you're done.

It's unique but by far the most unique and rare Sat cart is the Magic Cart, which helps play backups on the Saturn.

what magic cart does is stop the CD motor making it easier to swap...
so yes it will play CD-R if you do swap with legit CD... it won't play CD-R by itself.
you need Saturn System Disc to do that.
cheers
