Because as a treasure game, it's hyped to hell, and all the people who haven't played it assume it's godly because some guy on gamefaqs said so.

Soukyugurentai, Zanac, Recca, Galactic Attack, hell, MUSHA are all more fun if you ask me.

It's overhyped but it's special because it shows off Saturn's RAW powers. Everything on screen dazzles and pulsates, it's quite cool.

But yeah, a lot of people play this and get disappointed because they expect a life-changing experience. In truth there aren't many. (for me for example SF II arcade was such one, but they are far and few inbetween)

Battle Garegga is a lot more fun than RSG. I look at RSG as a piece of fine art... but it's not something I like to play TOO often. I like the same to VIRTUA FIGHTER 2. I know technically it's a great game, but gimme Fighters MegaMix any day of the week, as I have MORE FUN with that game, and for me FUN is all that matters.

I'm sure a lot of its appeal comes from its never appearing in America. Having this game always out of reach gives it an extra allure.

But Radiant Silvergun is a great game in its own right. Besides the wonderful graphics, which probably push the Saturn harder than any other game, Treasure introduced enough innovation and style to keep anyone hooked.

Essentially, the game comes down to building chain combos. Much like combos in fighting games, really. All enemies in Silvergun are either red, blue, or yellow; as long as you continue to destroy ships of the same color, your chain combos continue to rise. This gives the game a great sense of strategy, because now you must actively know which targets to hit, and which to avoid.

The weapons on your ship can also be powered up, depending on how many points you score with them. This is where the combo system pays off; you have an added incentive besides the high score. And with the endless giant boss battles, you need as much firepower as you can get.

I don't know if Silvergun is something that you'll love if you don't already love shooters. It's very much a genre game, and you have to know the conventions that are being tweaked and snubbed at. The difficulty is very high, as well, and no doubt some would be turned away by that.

But I think that, given time, Silvergun could win over just about anyone. I didn't get to play it myself until a few months ago, so this clearly isn't a case of Saturn nostalgia. Ignore the hype and just enjoy the game for what it is.

suznjak- same here, i didnt really like it, i guess people force themselves to like it since they pay $150 for it.

i like batsugun a lot more, in my opinion RSG doesnt have that much action.

As for the graphics, its 10 year old technology, not impressive any more

The last statement is unfair. For me I look at it this way, I know they are not impressive compared to today's graphics but that's natural. Instead I think about the year 1998, and the kind of graphics back then. I also think about Saturn games' graphics in general, and then, I'm blown away yet again by RSG's graphical mastery. Also play it on a good sound system with speakers and crank up the tunes... good high explosive stuff...

I haven't played Radiant Silvergun, but that statement is just plain foolish. o_O

Any developer, even the most incompetent, can shit out some lame 3D graphics these days like in Aquaman or Charlie's Angels, and some still may consider it better looking than your average 2600 or NES game (or even better than later titles). However, the skill it takes to crunch the code to produce the graphics in Radiant Silvergun is FAR greater than the skill it takes to make a game that looks like Aquaman. If you knew anything about actual game development and programming, you'd realize this. Everything is relative compared to the power of the technology the developers had to work with. There are very few developers these days that are truly using all the capabilities of the systems they're programming for. However, when technology was limited, it wasn't an option for a good developer to program their games half-assed. If they had big ideas, they had to struggle to implement them. I rarely find myself impressed by the graphics of modern games because I look at them and think "Eh, big deal, just mediocre PS2/GameCube/XBox graphics", but I'm often impressed by the graphics of the best older titles because I'm simply amazed that they were able to pull off such great things with what limited technology they had. Heck, just the other day I was watching my boyfriend play TMNT3 on NES and I was quite impressed by the water background in the second stage.

Here we go again. These anti-RS threads seem to pop up periodically, like some sort of fungus. Wake me up when the shooter comes along that more than three people say is as good as/better than Radiant Silvergun.

Your spelling, grammar, l33t speak and general childishness demonstrate your level of maturity. They also hurt mine poor eyes more than shit-poor visuals ever could.

RSG, like EVERY other shooter out there, is a matter of taste. Because you don't like it means either A.) it's just not your type or B.) you have not played it deeply enough which is the level on which RSG needs to be played to be truly appreciated.
It received great accolades for good reason, and when a game receives as much critical accolade on such a wide scale, there is hardly no reason for that. RSG is a great shooter and stands miles above others' generica in so many ways. Rehashed? Please - that ALONE shows that you've barely if at all scratched the surface of the game - the weapons system alone, rehashed? My ass.The accolade for RSg came from 'true' gamers and the hardcore and shmup-specialty-press, not the dipshit braindead types who go ga-ga over a game on its visuals/blood-fest -level alone. Another proof that you've barely so much as really looked at the game is your claim on the visuals being on the same level as Einhander. What a bloody laugh - there is FAR more going on is RSG than the PS ever has going on in Squaresoft's Einhander.

Like every other great game out there that has rightly received great reviews and applause, the necessary backlash is always there from people who will claim everyone else is a retard/fanboy/idiot for liking so-and-so game, as THEY didn't like it and so it is solid gospel that the game is all the usual terms spewed by these types of people - 'overhyped' 'bad grafics (SIC)' 'rehashed'.

As for the statement that part of RSG's allure comes from it never being released outside the Nippon, how ridiculous. Did the Japanese press and gaming community fall all over it the way they did back in '98 just becasue Westerners would never see it on their shores?

Just as idiotic is the claim that people spend $150+ on it and so they force themselves to like it. The MAJORITY of people who own RSG are those who bought it at its normal RRP or imported it for not much more if more at all back in '98.

No. Not sensitive.

Justifiably SICK of these types of rants from people who thrash critically-acclaimed games based on their very limited experience of them, threads of which nature, as mentioned above, pop up like bloody fungi. it's pathetic, childish, and idiotic.

Here are just a few reasons why Radiant Silvergun is a great game.

The combo system is deep and allows people to take the gameplay to a new level - but only if they desire to. The game is as deep as you want it to be - master the combo system and become a high-scoring master, or ignore it and play the game as a kill-em-all shooter. It's up to the player to choose. And choice is ALWAYS a good thing.

Seven different attack methods are at your disposal, and each can be done easily. Each has a distinctive advantage as well, lending each one to be useful in some situation. In most other games there's at least ONE weapon everyone can think of that is near useless. With Radiant Silvergun, you can find a legitimate use for all seven. It keeps the gameplay fresh.

BOSS FIGHTS. The sheer ludicrousy of boss patterns and the incredible variety of attacks each enemy has is nothing short of inspiring. The boss fights just get crazier and crazier as you play through, and just when you think it couldn't possibly do anything else to you - it does.

Radiant Silvergun also revolutionized the concept of the small hitbox. The game always seems fair, even when it's churning out hundreds of bullets. It truly is a skill game.

Blaming the game for its price tag, its "outdated graphics", or any number of trivial things seems to be petty and somewhat meager in terms of debate. I'm not saying "OMG LIKE IT OR DIE LOLOLOL" but you should at least be able to see the finer points and respect the game for what it's worth. Is that worth $150? Maybe not. But I'm not complaining, I got mine for $50. Worth every penny!

I live independently in Japan, thanks, with a decent job and ongoing education and a local girlfriend. Which, judging from your junior-high-level spasms here, is more than your trucking-destined ass will ever see on your patch of land in Missouri shooting out 'yer mansauce all by your lonesome..

I'd wager anyone who played Soukyugurentai would say it's better then RS, and the PS1 version is far cheaper too (probably from how unknown the game is, and because it got a rerelease).

I didn't find RSG all that unique, but that's probably more related to the fact that I got to play it for all of about five minutes the one time I had the opportunity. As a reasonably diehard shmup fan (though I prefer 16-bit ones, myself) I know I'd like it should I ever get the chance to sit down and spend a few hours with it.
