Bought a used xbox yesterday at a flea market and the dvd drive seems to be stuck. I figure i just need to get a new dvd drive. Any recommendations? I was searching ebay and the thompson ones are pretty cheap. Do you pay for what you get when you buy on of those or would you guys recommend a samsung one? Not sure what to do, but i'd like to get one here either tonight or tomorrow.

Why do you think it's stuck? Does the Xbox boot normally otherwise? Green blob? Menu screen? Just no eject?

everything on the box boots up fine, it even plays the music that the original owner put on it. I can get to every screen without a game inside. When i press the button to open the tray it sounds like it is trying to open, but doesn't. So... i guess it is a no eject problem. Do i just need a new tray and not the complete drive?

It could very well be that the DVD Tray is just off it's track.
Open it up and see..... :-P

Well it may be that it was shoved accidentally .
So you might want to take it apart and slide the tray all the way out and then see if it will go in and out.
I think there are 4 small screws you need to take out for the tray to come off the track so you can slide it back and forth.

Actually scratch that.... That's a PS2 Dvd Tray... LOL
For the Xbox drive...With the Dvd drive case opened, Look at the top of the Tray and you'l see a cog wheel ... Use a flat head screwdriver and turn it counterclockwise and it will move the tray out a liitle....Then you should be able to pull it open... Then leave the tray open and turn on the Xbox and push the eject button and see what happens.

alright it opens up now, thanks :)
but.... now it won't stay closed. I power it up and the disc tray opens up; I push the close button and it slides in, stays for a second and slides back out. I don't have any xbox games so i put a cd in it and it still did the same thing. Even when i turn it off completely the tray pops out. Whats up with it now?

On my PS2 it only did that when I didn't have the tray in the right postion at first.
Like it was not out far enough and when the PS2 brought it in it was trying to bring it in to far so it would just eject it again.
Try pulling it out again and then pushing it all the way back in , then turn it on and push the button again.
You may have to try different tray settings before you find where it is supposed to be.

well crap, i'm just about sick of it. i've been working on it all damn day and still no dice. Anyway, looks like i'll just sell it on ebay as a broken xbox... that is unless someone here wants to buy it and fuss with it.

Honestly, I paid 40 bucks for it (comes with 1 controller, RF switch and AC). If you are interested, I just want to make my money back. So 40 plus shipping. I can check the dvd drive when i get home, but i know it is a samsung, not sure of the specific model, i'd have to open it back up again.
